I wonder if the "extension" has anything to do with the story oozing out into public view? This thread was started on the 5th.

lol what exactly is the team's intention here to prolong this investigation?

it's now clear all they care about is $ as well.

double standards strong with this one

pretty easy for the team to just fire him and cite his performance

it could be they intend to fire him whatever the outcome of the investigation

but they want some PR cover in case the next GM is a disaster. They could at least be able to say "look, we had no choice but to fire him"

Clear to you maybe. I'm still convinced this is pure CYA.

then whoever jody has running this is so out of their depth. did they simply anticipate olshey to take it lying down? it's a PR disaster waiting to happen.

what precedence is their for a wrongful termination suit anyway? guys get fired all the time in the league. Olshey himself said that he "serves at the pleasure of Jody Allen." and even while she doesn't need a tangible reason to fire him, he has plenty of missteps they can easily point to.

    this is purely financial.

they are bungling this firing in anticipation of the ramifications of firing his replacement?

    this is logical to you?

our leadership is nothing short of a disaster.

well I agree if they are going to fire him they should just do it. I guess they should let the investigation conclude and I guess it still has to interview Olshey. This is death by a thousand cuts. I have a real hard time seeing how the Vulcan could justify keeping Olshey on the job, especially after the issues with the Billups hiring, however over-blown they were

I really don't know is this has anything to do with trying to terminate the balance of his contract for cause. Might have more to do with future liability

which brings up an interesting question: would Portland ever release the findings of the investigation? What would they do if another team that was considering hiring Olshey asked for the findings? Would Olshey have grounds to sue if Portland did release the investigation?

even if the investigation never sees the light of day, could Olshey ever get another job in the NBA after all this?

More like they anticipate him getting another job, continuing to be a douche, and they get blamed for it. Call it the Sandusky rule. Penn State got blamed for crimes Sandusky comitted after he was no longer emplowed by them. Some of the many people fired had come to work for the University after Sandusky left.

If you fire somebody for job performance you had better be sure there are no other issues. You will notice that they paid Stotts without a whimper. If it was just about the money, why make a fuss about Olshey? The difference in how the 2 situations were handled strongly suggests that money is not the issue.

Maybe. Or maybe somebody pointed out to them what the Thorns went through when they just let the coach go. They wanted to just get it over with and move on...and they got scorched for it.

You are correct, but for the wrong reason. They screwed up by not doing this at the end of last season. If we are going to have a new GM, hiring him after the season is already underway is ridiculous. We needed them here for free agency, the coach's hiring process, etc.

Seriously - we need to worry about the result, not the process.

I agree. I think the ownership (group) is a hot mess, as is Olshey.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
The simplest possibility is that the Blazers didn't want to fire Olshey--they liked him or didn't yet think he was worth firing--which is why he survived the offseason, and that this investigation isn't actually a sham, they're trying to ascertain if they actually have to fire him for toxicity while not having an issue with his GM performance.

Obviously, more Machiavellian possibilities might be at play, but I just thought I'd mention that there is a straightforward possibility too.

This actually seems quite reasonable. Everything we have heard about Jody is how much she trusts Neil. The recent Mcgowan piece by Quick revealed CM's frustrations with Jody giving Neil front page opportunities.
