Shooting at Umpqua Community College: 10 dead

And here I thought it was because I've liked Kelly Olynyk since he was in college. And because I like unions.

 

Regardless of law unfortunately, the crazies will get them any other way. Black marker, stealing, etc.

Hell and if not guns, a pressure cooker, or a knife, etc, etc, etc.

The problem is the mental health crisis facing the nation. Not the tools.

 

So let's talk about Chris Mintz, shall we?

Chris Mintz, an army veteran, now here is a hero who ran towards the shooter, rather than away like human instinct teaches us to do. He was shot 3 times trying to block a door the shooter was trying to get in, and then two more times as he was laying on the ground. A nurse happened to be there as well, and as she held his hand, all Chris Mintz kept saying was that it was his son's 6th birthday.

Thankfully, Chris Mintz survived the 5 bullets and is expected to live, although he will need to learn to walk again.

Let's get off the gun talk, and talk about Chris Mintz, and the heroism he showed yesterday

 

That's a cool story bro, but his true actions conflict with his message. Arming ISIS who has been responsible for thousands of innocent deaths.

 

Just read that story! He is a true hero! I bet he saved a lot of lives with his act of heroism.

 

I think people who don't own guns don't understand that there already IS background checks. Hell, Oregon just passed a new law requiring that everyone has to pass background checks on private sales as well. So at this point, they have background checks in gun stores. They have background checks at gun shows. They have background checks on private sales.

Explain to me what other background checks are left to cover?

 

This is what I'm saying as well. So what if a federal legislation on background and mental health checks happen and violence is still a major problem. What do we do next? More legislation after legislation and civil liberties being compromised until one day we realize no citizen can obtain guns legally. Then what?

As I've said before, illegal drugs are still being sold, even when the government spends hundreds of millions of dollars to enforce the war on drugs. The criminals will still be able to obtain guns. Look at Mexico. They have a gun ban and the only ones with guns are the cartels and other violent criminals.

Maybe instead of punishing those that obey the laws, we should find positive solutions.

 

It just seems like the trend is that something like Umpqua happens, and then all these people who know zero about guns or gun legislation take to social media screaming about how this must be stopped, and we need gun control!!111!!11!!!!1

They act as though there is zero gun control currently. Like anyone can just walk into a gun store, hand over some cash, and walk out. No questions asked. That's simply not true. If you want to buy a gun, you have to go through a background check. And in the case of this asshole, who reportedly owned three handguns and had been planning this for a while, how do you stop that? If he purchased them legally, and he planned it out so it wasn't spur of the moment, how do you stop that from happening?

I guess I just don't understand how there seems to be a huge demographic that doesn't actually want to find a way to prevent this from happening. They just want to get rid of guns. They aren't looking at the reason it happened. Guns aren't the reason it happened. This guy was starved for attention and he knew that shooting a bunch of people would get him attention. That's the REASON it happened. He was a disturbed, lonely, depressed individual. That's the REASON it happened. Guns were the method, but not the reason.

If I walked up and punched you in the face with no explanation. No words spoken. You would probably fight back, but afterwards you'd probably want to know why I punched you in the face, right? Did you wrong me somehow? Did you say something that pissed me off? Or maybe I'm just a nut job who walked up to the first person I saw and punched them in the face.

 

What are you proposing then?

Also, I'm a person who knows pretty much nothing about gun laws. When you say "background check", is that just the same background check that employers do? I think I've seen lots of people say that a mental health check should be included. Would you be against that?

For those of you who believe having your guns is going to protect you from the government, You're gonna have to convince me that this guy with any LEGAL firearm can stop the government from taking it away...

Yeah and if the government with their tanks, helicopters and bazookas really comes to take your shit away. There's nothing you can do about it. Those of you who think they can defend themselves from some imaginary war against the government need to get your heads examined.
