Not to make excuses, but he was going against the defending Super Bowl champs in his 2nd career game with a team that won 2 games last year, and he still managed to throw for 432 yards against that defense. NFL QB ratings also don't factor in rushing yards, and Newton had 10 carries for 53 yards and a TD. The rest of the Panthers had 11 carries for 18 yards. He's already a better NFL QB than Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, or Dennis Dixon. Using a game against Green Bay as some sort of proof of Newton's NFL future is ridiculous, especially considering he threw for 432 yards and ran for another 53 yards. It makes me question how closely you follow the NFL.
The total rating from ESPN's new stat does take rushing into account. They look at every play from scrimmage.....So maybe I am not the one you should be questioning about how closely I follow the NFL? I am also not calling him a failure int he NFL. Just pointing out that after playing the Cards and Packers, he is pretty average. In fact exactly average according to the Total QB stat. He might be good, and he might not be. It's too early at this point to say either way. Big numbers though.
Like all scrambling quarterbacks he turns the ball over way too much to be an elite qb and take his team anywhere in the playoffs. Its cute and fun to watch, but doesnt lead to playoff success.
I'd like to play this game. You give me a scrambler that was good/great, and I will counter with one that wasn't/isn't Vince Young says goodbye
Young had the ability to scramble, I wouldnt call him a scrambler though. He could sit in the pocket and be extremely effective passing to his Rice and Owens.
Newton has shown the ability to stand in the pocket as well. He threw a ball yesterday while moving up in the pocket that was 60 yards on rope. I thought he'd be a bust based on what I saw of him at Auburn. He still may be, but the ability to throw the ball while in the pocket, and after taking a direct snap instead of a shotgun snap, is there, and I didn't think it would be. I don't care one way or another if Newton busts, and I'm convinced he knew that his dad took money from Auburn boosters. That said, I've seen things from him the first two games that I didn't see from him at Auburn. He's completing 63% of his passes, and is averaging 10 yards per attempt, which is incredible considering how many times he has put the ball in the air. He did throw some bad balls yesterday, but again, he was going against a defense that won the Super Bowl last season and can get after the QB.
The yardage numbers he's put up for the first two games are impressive. But, from the highlights I've seen his recievers have been catching balls by burning their coverage. I see it a lot with young qb's, they do great for the 1st half of the season, then once they're schemed they drop back down to earth drastically. That said, I'm a Newton hater. His head is already huge and he hasnt won an NFL game yet.
In the past 10 years, Derek Anderson comes to mind, but he wasn't a rookie. Which rookie QBs have had starts to their career like Newton, and have done it on an offense that scored 12ppg and gave up 25ppg the previous season? They were the last ranked offense last season. 32nd out of 32 teams.
Vince Young shot puts the ball. Cam Newton has an NFL arm. Terrible, terrible comparison. I'd compare Young to Tim Tebow, but not to Cam Newton. I think Newton is more like Mike Vick or Steve Young in physical tools. I might throw Randall Cunningham and Donovan McNabb in as well, or even Aaron Rodgers. Young was a big WR/RB who happened to play QB. Newton, at least in these first two games, is doing things the Vince Young never did, or never could do.
Yes for a rookie QB he's a god, and most of you are bitter because he beat Oregon obviously. I am praising his raw skills. I saw Newton ravage Alabama through the air, this guy has all the athletic gifts to get it done. If he stays healthy he'll be fine. Wrong, Steve Young is the prototypical scrambling QB. Because we all know if Trent Dilfer can win a title, Michael Vick cannot? Nor can Randall Cunningham? Pretty silly.
Apparently he's wearing a boot on his right ankle and is questionable. http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/13994/cam-newton Hopefully he doesn't rush back if he feels bad.
Dilfer threw for 12 TDs and 11 INTs in 8 starts with only 59% passing and a QB rating of 76.6 the year the Ravens won the Super Bowl. For his career, Dilfer had a QB rating of 70, with 113 TDs and 129 INTs. Dilfer was a guy in a great situation, with one of the best defenses in NFL history (only gave up 16 TDs ALL YEAR!!!), and with a 2000-yard RB tandem in Jamal Lewis and Priest Holmes. Joey Harrington or Derek Anderson may have won a SB QBing that team.
Nope. Tony Banks started the year, and then Dilfer replaced him when Banks got hurt and went 7-1 down the stretch. What's amazing about that team is they gave up 10 ppg, yet still only went 12-4. Any offense at all for a five-to-seven year period and the Ravens could have been a dynasty, or at least been a peer of New England.
Cam Newton is one of the finest guitarists in Portland.
