Manning's first 3 games. G1 - 21/37 302 yds 1TD 3INT G2 - 21/33 188yds 1TD 3INT G3 - 20/44 193yds 0TD 2INT 3rushes/26yds Final season stats 3739yds 57% 24 TD 28 INT 71 QB rtg Another thing to remember about both Elway and Manning is that both were 4 year starters in college, and both played in a pro-style offense in college. Cam Newton started for 1 season in major college football from a shot-gun spread, played in a similar offense at Florida and Blinn, and has learned a pro-style offense well enough without any OTAs because of the lock-out to become an "average" NFL starting QB. It's actually more impressive to me after I researched Elway and Manning, since both were #1 overall picks as well, and seeing how bad they were early in their rookie campaign.
I agree with the last statement. Especially with a quarterback where so much of greatness is a mental ability to read and understand how to play against complex defensive schemes. I do agree with MM that the true test will be when teams are able to study Newton and then focus on trying to stop him. Can Newton take those pysical gifts and transition them into the NFL game. We have all seen quarterbacks come into the lague with a flash with only a small percentage actually becoming franchise quarterbacks. For a prediction, I see Newton becoming the Carolina quaterback for the next few years. I will play the odds and say him becomng one of the names mentioned here (Brady, Rogers, Manning or others) . . . becoming a quaterback that leads his team to the playoffs year after year, Newton is not the next young quarterback to reach that level.
Carolina is going to have to rebuild their running game, or Newton will never be able to fully develop as a QB or even make it through this season. 3.3 ypc makes any QB less effective and means more attention can be given to the passing game.
Randy Moss in his prime is a lot better than an off-peak Steve Smith. Smith and Newton's peaks won't coincide anyway. As for Big Ben I would say Newton is a lot more gifted than Ben. I don't think many people can argue with that, but Newton's accuracy still needs work. He identified the right reads against Jacksonville but his accuracy was off. The monsoon was a large factor as well, that was crazy.
This is pretty much it. You do have to adjust for era though, rules are a little friendlier now. That's why Brady's 2010 season was not rated higher with Total QBR. Nice summary overall though.
Still impressing. Thus far, today, his rating is over 127 (and has rushed for 60 yds) against the 'Skins.
I started him over Phillip Rivers, my usual starter, and Jay Cutler, who was supposed to be my back-up, on my Fantasy team today. Newton - 29 points Rivers - 10 points Cutler - 13 points Good move, Coach G! Plus, GM G actually drafted Newton in the final round of the draft, much to the derision and ridicule of my fellow league members.
Good move playing him against the Redskins, who for whatever reason cannot defend a mobile quarterback. He made some nice throws yesterday, but everyone knew he had an arm. Yesterday he was on his game with where to put the ball, and who to throw to. No turnovers is big. I'm not a big fantasy guy...do INTs work against your score? If he would've thrown 2 picks with the otherwise same stats, would he have had 29 points? BTW...I don't care how crappy Tim Tebow looked, I'd trade almost anyone on Seattle's roster for him.
For the season he has a 57.5 Total QBR rating, higher than Rivers and 14th in the NFL. Nice try hating on him, but the guy is an amazing rookie. Good move bruh. Cam was very impressive with his accuracy against Washington. That was a fun game.
If he can get a consistent running game and a true #1 receiver (with Steve Smith at #2), I don't see how anything but injury can stop Newton at this point. 22/35 290 yards 3 TD/O INT 117 QB rating yesterday is pretty nice for a rookie on a bad team. He's up to an 87.1 rating for the season as well.
Yeah the problem with the Panthers is that they have the 28th scoring defense. Their offense is set for a long time though. :]
Aaron Rodgers is going to be the NFL MVP. Best QB rating in history for a season, at leat 45 TDs, only 6 INTs.
38 fantasy points for me from Newton in my championship round. Barring a horrible game by both Julio Jones and Michael Turner tomorrow, I win my league almost solely because I drafted Cam Newton. He broke Peyton Manning's rookie record for yards as well, and accounted for 34 TDs on his own via pass or rush. It's easily the greatest rookie QB season in the modern NFL era. No one else comes close in terms of stats.
Yeah, he was a great fantasy player. I had him in both my leagues and I won both. Didn't draft him, picked him up as a FA.
