CHICAGO --*Carmelo Anthony's first stop on the free-agency express is expected to be Chicago at some point on Tuesday, the first day free agents can speak to teams about signing in other cities. This revelation, as*reported by ESPN.com's Marc Stein, can't be a bad thing for the Bulls.*

Out of all the places Anthony could have traveled to first, he chose to start the tour in Chicago. That means the Bulls can make the first impression, the first of many impressive pitches he will see over the next week or so. In order to understand the things that Anthony may see and do in Chicago, it's important to go back in time to see how the organization handled the free-agent recruitments during the summer of 2010.*

Looking forward to seeing some execution that leads the team in the right direction.

Jackson has also said that in the event Anthony signs elsewhere, the Knicks can recover quickly, especially with the club having available cap space next summer.

Jackson has made one significant move by acquiring point guard Jose Calderon from Dallas in a six-player deal that included Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton.

Calderon is an upgrade but the rosters of the Bulls, Rockets and Mavericks are all superior while the Lakers are in a similar rebuilding-on-the-fly mode as the Knicks.

Anthony can verbally agree to a deal as early as Tuesday, but he can’t officially sign until July 10. If Anthony elects to sign elsewhere, it is not inconceivable that Jackson would look to orchestrate a sign-and-trade to acquire assets for his best player.

The more likely scenario is that after Anthony is wined and dined by some of the NBA’s high-profile clubs, he will simply return home and sign with the Knicks.

@AlexKennedyNBA: Derrick Rose went through a workout at the Buls' practice facility for Carmelo Anthony, to show that he's healthy.

For all of us unabashed homers out there....

here are some pics from Melo's visit to the Bulls.

    Basic highlights:

Noah, Taj, Thibs, GarPax, and DERRICK were all there to greet him.

Derrick went through a practice for Melo so he could see how healthy he was.

They spent 9 hours with him which culminated in a dinner at a swanky downtown hotel where the clan was joined by Reinsdorf and Pippen to put the finishing touches on the night.

And in case we're worried about LaLa being an issue, Larsa Pippen's got our back covered:

Sources: the Knicks will not entertain any sign-&-trade deal with Chicago that includes them taking back Carlos Boozer

Posted about 12 midnight last night. I find the statement timing to say the least. Almost as if NY knows something that we dont! ;)

Also Melo spent over a day in Chicago. Well over a day and met with the team/players for 9 hrs. That is a hell of a long time just for passing interest.

Frank Isola wrote some interesting stuff:

"Gibson's presence is also significant because it has previously been reported that the Bulls would attempt to trade Gibson in order to create additional salary-cap space for Anthony. However, the Bulls stressed to Anthony that in order to be a legitimate title contender it is important for the club to retain both Gibson and Jimmy Butler.

According to a source, Anthony wants both players to stay even if it means that Anthony will have to sign for significantly less than the maximum the Knicks can offer, $129 million over five years. Coincidentally, the Knicks essentially gutted their roster to acquire Anthony from the Denver Nuggets in February of 2011, and Anthony realizes that he would have to make financial sacrifices if he wants to pursue a title with the Bulls."

    Mike McGraw @McGrawDHBulls

I say the key to a Melo sign & trade is Bulls take back JR Smith and Prigioni. That way, Knicks have $50 mil cap room in 2015.

    This makes sense to me.

If NY is terrible this year they'll get a good draft pick, and they'll always be an enticing FA destination, so re-loading for 2015 and getting a few assets (draft picks, trade exceptions, etc) seems like a sensible way to go.

Don't know why Prigioni is included. He's not guaranteed after this coming season, so they could keep him and still have the space in 2015-16.

J.R. Smith is only 28...in the prime of his career. He has a decent PER and is only making about $6mil/year. I know lots of people who love Smith's game and have been pining for Smith for years.

Gosh, why is he now considered such an albatross?

If we got Smith back in a trade, I wouldn't be surprised if we gave him the Tim Thomas treatment, and use the stretch provision to lessen the cap hit if it puts them over the tax for this year.

And I think over the years J.R. Smith has proven himself to be a incurable mental pygmy.

Smith would contend for the starting SG job for us. He's a 6MOY caliber player.

Smith would be more productive as a Globetrotter if he had a sense of humor.
