oh man i really feel for you! I might be in the same boat! Back in the day it was standard to get the screw tops for the more valuable cards! I have many like this as well. Now im bummed too!
It was disappointing on so many levels. I dont even care about the cash value loss because I was going to keep it anyway. It was a relic of my youth and one of the jewels of my collection. To make it even more heartbreaking, it was bought with my dad as a present to me at a collectors show. I still haven't told him yet but hes been anxiously awaiting the results. Ive done some research and I can still get it authenticated/altered graded by PSA but I have to specifically request that. Authentic/alters are going for about $5k on ebay so its not a total loss. I think I might send it into beckett instead and try my luck there, I read some people said they had success doing that. I had a total of about 20 of my best cards all kept in screw downs the but Jordan was the only one that with its type of case so I am hopefull the others will be fine. Also the Jordan was the only one that was stuck to the case when I opened it. I am very worried though and a little dejected. PSA takes forever and I have all my orders sitting there for a month or more now. So all I can do is wait right now. You should take yours out of the screw cases, but no rush cause if there was damage then its already done. If you hang tight Ill keep you guys informed on how mine turn out as they come back so you can determine your risk. I read that you can scan the cards with a black light and it will show "pressing" damage, I haven't tired that yet so I cant confirm.
Someone from Portland’s selling the same card for $200k. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1986-Fleer...E&pageci=1e5d50ad-a7fa-4abd-afd4-8cd4b8357cd0
Tons of baseball, basketball, and football cards up for auction. Some autographed including a Bill Walton. https://hibid.com/catalog/269710/biggest-collectors-auction-ever/?g=all-categories&ipp=100
Bill Walton agreed to sign an autograph for me but told me I had to work it through a Blazer vice president.
There are a few interesting items but I assume all the amazing stuff has been picked over in the boxes of cards. The 89 fleer basketball set is interesting, along with all the MJ cards. That Walter Payton needs to be taken out of the screw case!
Because of the recent surge of orders PSA is suspending all basic grading until further notice, which they currently think will be July 1st. The said they have got more submission in the last 3 days then they have in the last 3 months. They are so backlogged they have been taking in more orders than they can process and need time to catch up. Thats a crazy awesome indicator for the industry in general but frustrating if you need stuff done. All my orders are still sitting there from Jan/Feb submissions and I admit that I am frustrated with how slow it is going but at least I got them in before the shut down. I have one set of 11 cards, that are all high/mid value, on the last step of the process before I get results and they ship back. So any day now on that one, apparently last step is just double check the holder and label before shipping. Once it ships Ill get a notice that my grades are available then I can see my grades on the report before my cards get here. Looks like Topps is going public through a SPAC and getting involved in NFTs. Given my experience with how hot the industry is right now I think Ill pick up a few shares. It also aligns my NFT, card frenzy and stock trading hobbies into one nice package. https://www.cnn.com/2021/04/06/investing/topps-spac-stock-nft/index.html
I guess I’m going to have to go through my cards upon my return to the mainland. I’ve got a shit-ton of baseball and basketball cards from the 80’s/90’s, some older stuff, and random stuff from the 2000’s.
So I went ahead and made some bids on a few items. I thought I was going to clean up then some people came in at the last second and bid some prices really high. I was looking at everything Jordan and a few unopened boxes. I ended up winning the Bill Walton autograph for $30, which was kind of cool. It will be a nice addition to my collection. In other news I am considering buying a few unopened boxes of stuff for fun. If anyone is curious the 1992 sets seem to be cheap enough for this and you have a pretty good chance of pulling either a Jordan or Shaq rookie to get your money back. Topps, Upper Deck and Stadium Club Series 2 all run from $200 to $700 for a full box, depending on the brand. Just got to make sure you get a factory seal if its a wax pack.
I just got a few grades in. My first Gem mint 10 is a 1988 fleer Stockton rookie card. Goes for $1500+ in ebay. That makes up for some of my previous disappointment. It's hard to get good grades cards. This lot had 11 cards and I got some VG 4s in some of them. A few NM 8. Nothing really notable tho except for maybe 1977 Adrian Dantley NM8.
If you want the best pricing guide for sport cards it's still Beckett. You can download the app on your phone, tablet or computer.
