76ers select G Cook with 21st pick in the NBA draft
Thursday, June 28, 2007 09:52 PM
NEW YORK (Ticker) - The Philadelphia 76ers selected Daequan Cook with the 21st selection in Thursday's NBA draft.

Cook has vast potential and is a fine athlete with a good shooting touch which extends to the 3-point line. He moves well without the ball to get in good position to shoot, and his release, extension and lift off the floor are all excellent.

But it will be a roll of the dice for the 76ers, who looked past Cook's off-court problems.

He will join NBA-ready swingman Al Thornton, who was taken by Philadelphia with the 12th pick. As ready as Thornton is, there are many questions about the young Cook's game.

He did not start or play big minutes during his only season at Ohio State and has only a rudimentary understanding of the game. Cook has to work on his ball-handling, learning how to set his man up for drives with fakes and how to maximize his footwork to enable him to get to the basket swiftly.

Bobcats use 22nd pick on Boston College F Dudley
Thursday, June 28, 2007 09:59 PM
NEW YORK (Ticker) - The Charlotte Bobcats picked Boston College forward Jared Dudley with the 22nd pick in Thursday's NBA draft.

With forward Gerald Wallace opting out of his contract earlier in the week, the Bobcats were seeking to add depth at forward.

Dudley finished four-year career fifth on the Boston College scoring list with 2,071 points.

Although he is undersized at 6-7, Dudley was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year as a senior, ranking second in the league in scoring (19.0 ppg) and first in rebounds (8.3 rpg).

As a senior, Dudley improved his perimeter shooting noticeably and took steps toward being a perimeter threat, something he had never been before.

He was the second player from Boston College selected, following former teammate Sean Williams, who went to the New Jersey Nets with the 17th pick.

Real nice moves by the Blazers, Rudy Fernandez will be a player in this league and to go along with Sergio Rodriguez - nice Spanish connection

Why are the Blazers the ones only ever buying these things, can't Dallas get involved

Wonder if the Bulls can buy #29 and get Splitter, Fazekas or Gray. Maybe Herbert Hill or McRoberts?

Knicks take athletic F Chandler with 23rd pick
Thursday, June 28, 2007 10:03 PM
NEW YORK (Ticker) - Looking to get more athletic, the New York Knicks selected DePaul forward Wilson Chandler with the 23rd pick in Thursday's NBA draft.

Earlier in the night, the Knicks acquired forward Zach Randolph, along with guards Fred Jones and Dan Dickau, in exchange for guard Steve Francis and forward Channing Frye to address a need for another low-post scorer.

Now, New York has taken Chandler, who will upgrade the team's athleticism, joining forwards David Lee and Renaldo Balkman, who like to run the floor and finish around the rim.

And there is no doubt Chandler can do that. He is an exceptional athlete, even by NBA standards. He can run the floor with any guard - and better than all but the most athletic forwards - and finish plays above the rim in spectacular fashion.

Chandler can get those crucial points that every team needs, points where no play was being run for him - much like the aforementioned Lee and Balkman. His athletic ability gets him a couple of follow dunks every game.

New York, which still is in the process of rebuilding its roster, gets the type of athletic rebounds over bigger players that only a few gifted players can get. He has the makings of a good defensive player with quick feet - also a big need for the Knicks.

Trail Blazers added shooting with Spanish G Fernandez
Thursday, June 28, 2007 10:05 PM
NEW YORK (Ticker) - Rudy Fernandez stuck around this time.

After withdrawing his name from the NBA draft the previous two years, Fernandez was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers with the No. 24 pick Thursday night.

Portland got the pick from the Phoenix Suns for cash.

Fernandez had another stellar campaign overseas, averaging a team-high 16.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists with Spanish club Badalona. The shooting guard also averaged 16.8 points in Euroleague play.

Along with his skill in Europe, the guard's game should translate well to the NBA. He has the range to shoot the ball effectively from the outside and, if defenders press up on him, he can drive it and finish around the rim.

His abilities resemble San Antonio Spurs star sixth man Manu Ginobili, who has made an art out of mixing daring drives with a sweet outside stroke. But he may have to adopt Ginobili's penchant for flopping on the defensive end because that may be his only shot.
Almost reed-thin, Fernandez will be tested right away by NBA players once they see his skinny frame

Jazz select Rice G Almond with No. 25 pick in NBA draft
Thursday, June 28, 2007 10:09 PM
NEW YORK (Ticker) - Morris Almond went from an afterthought to a highly coveted shooting guard in two seasons.

The third-leading scorer in the nation as a senior, Almond was selected by the Utah Jazz with the 25th pick in Thursday's NBA draft.

As a sophomore, Almond was a reserve with Rice, averaging 7.2 points for a middling program. His dramatic rise saw the 6-6, 215-pounder increase that total to 21.9 as a junior and 26.4 points in his senior season.

Possessing the prototype body for an NBA shooting guard, Almond should add instant offense to Utah's backcourt.

Despite being the target of opposing defenses, Almond scored over 30 points on 10 occasions and had a pair of 40-point games, including a career-high 44 vs. Vanderbilt.

Almond was outstanding from the arc with a .456 shooting percentage and a superb free-throw shooter, making 241 in his senior season and converting them at an .846 clip.

Showing there he's more than just a scorer, Almond also contributed on the boards, averaging 6.6 per game as a senior.

So the Pistons take a completely redundant set of players. Huh?

Rockets snare PG Brooks with 26th pick
Thursday, June 28, 2007 10:19 PM
NEW YORK (Ticker) - The Houston Rockets addressed a need in the backcourt by selecting Oregon's Aaron Brooks with the 26th pick in Thursday's NBA draft.

Brooks is a point guard who can put up points, leading the Pac-10 Conference in scoring at 17.7 points and propelling Oregon to the regional final of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in six years, where it lost to eventual champion Florida.

Despite his slender 160-pound frame, the 6-0 Brooks played big in the biggest games, scoring 25 points - including the winning 3-pointer - in a win over then-No. 1 UCLA, and netting a game-high 27 points against Florida.

Brooks can score and he can use his speed to get by his defender and get into the lane.

In college, Brooks was asked to do more of the former and less of the latter, but in the NBA that order is likely to be reversed.

He'll have to learn to think more like a point guard now that he has talented scorers to play with.

Pistons secure backcourt, take G Afflalo with 27th pick
Thursday, June 28, 2007 10:33 PM
NEW YORK (Ticker) - Chauncey Billups may not be back with the Detroit Pistons, but now they have some insurance.

The Pistons selected point guard Arron Afflalo with the 27th pick in Thursday's NBA draft. Detroit earlier took guard Rodney Stuckey with the 15th pick.

They continued to bolster the backcourt with the selection of Afflalo, who may have to take over as the floor general for the Pistons if Billups bolts. Detroit also has veteran guard Flip Murray.

A former NBA Finals MVP, Billups opted out of his contract and will explore the free agent market.

Afflalo, who may have to fill that void, also had shouldered a heavy burden as UCLA's top shooting threat the past two seasons, both of which resulted in NCAA Final Four appearances. He is the type of technically sound shooter who gets in a good rhythm and can make five or six shots in a row from 20 feet.

He is an excellent free-throw shooter, and when his perimeter shot isn't clicking, he knows how to get to the line.

Mavericks opt for Michigan State's Maurice Ager with 28th pick
Thursday, June 28, 2007 10:33 PM
NEW YORK (Ticker) - The San Antonio Spurs continued to boost their international flavor.

With the 28th pick in Thursday's NBA draft, the reigning NBA champions selected Brazilian Tiago Splitter with the 28th pick.

The Spurs have a long history of uncovering gems from overseas, including point guard Tony Parker and swingman Manu Ginobili. They may have another in the 6-11 Splitter.

A player whose forte is rebounding and defense, Splitter declared for the draft the previous three years but withdrew each time.

Earlier this week, he said he would not consider a move to the NBA unless he is picked in the first round. Otherwise, Splitter said his preference is to remain with Spain's Tau Ceramica, with which he has a contract that runs through the 2009-10 season.

The 22-year-old Splitter averaged 11.2 points and 5.4 rebounds has played with Tau Ceramica this past season.

Suns take veteran F Tucker with 29th pick
Thursday, June 28, 2007 10:36 PM
NEW YORK (Ticker) - The Phoenix Suns went with a proven commodity, selecting Wisconsin's Alando Tucker with the 29th pick in the NBA draft on Thursday.

The Big Ten Conference Player of the Year, Tucker averaged 19.9 points as a senior and became the Badgers' all-time leading scorer with 2,217 points. But the question surrounding Tucker is can he adjust from playing on the wing in college to shooting guard in the NBA.

A scorer rather than pure shooter, Tucker has a fantastic work ethic that enables him to play bigger than his 6-6, 205-pound frame.

But while he has the prototype body to play shooting guard, he lacks a confident perimeter shot and also is a poor free-throw shooter.

Tucker has a knack for creating enough space inside to get his shots off against taller players. Combine that with his tireless work ethic and the Suns will find a spot for him on the floor.

It is a smart pick for Phoenix, which has a loaded roster and can afford to take a shot on a player that may take some time to adjust to a new position and style of play.
