The Spurs have already rejected any New York notion of acquiring Manu Ginobili in a sign-and-trade deal, but various scenarios are popping up in various media outlets. Sprewell's agent, Robert Gist, says he wishes the Knicks would either trade Sprewell or stop talking about it. "The constant talk and no action just doesn't help the player," he said. "But the Spurs have always had a constant interest in Latrell and Latrell has always been interested in the Spurs. The Spurs tried to trade for him last season before the trade deadline for insurance in the playoffs. So did the Lakers. "But I haven't heard anything from the Spurs about it this time," Gist said. Fueling the speculation is the Spurs' possession of about $12 million in under-the-cap money and their unsigned free agents, shooting guard Stephen Jackson and point guard Speedy Claxton. Coach Gregg Popovich admits that the team's chances of re-signing Claxton remain dim because "Speedy wants to be a starting point guard with a starter's salary." Claxton and Jackson conceivably could be combined in a sign-and-trade deal with the Knicks. Some league-watchers, though, wonder whether or not the Spurs would be interested in tying up $13.5 million and $14.6 million to pay Sprewell this coming season and the next. Considering the Lakers' signings of Karl Malone and Gary Payton, the Spurs might benefit by taking on Sprewell, who will be 33 on Sept. 8. Of course, Knicks fans might not consider trading their favorite player for Jackson and Claxton a strong move. At any rate, the Spurs' next goal is to take care of the Jackson situation. They will remain in conversation with his agent, Dan Fegan, who remains reluctant to return phone calls. The Spurs' search for a backup point guard will begin more in earnest once Golden State restricted free agent Gilbert Arenas decides where he will play next season. There are strong indications he will sign with the Washington Wizards. He talked with the Clippers on Thursday night and with the Warriors on Friday. If he signs with the Wizards, the Warriors are expected to make a play for Claxton. The Spurs have shown some interest in Lakers free agent Robert Horry, and Horry says the team told him to wait until Monday to begin conversations. Agent Jeff Austin says he has talked to the Spurs about his client, Clippers free agent Eric Piatkowski. "We've had some conversations, but I don't think there will be any movement regarding Eric until next week sometime," Austin said. "There are a number of teams interested in Eric." Former Spurs guard Antonio Daniels is a free agent but his representative, Tony Dutt, says negotiations are going well with the Seattle SuperSonics</div>
Spree is not going anywhere I think... these trade rumours appeared every offseason in the last couple of years, and at the beginning of the season Spree would always be on the Knicks roster... Every coach in the NBA might be reluctant to take Spree on their team because of his history...
