In this year, Nash was getting used to a new system and a new coach in a new team. The year before that he had a PER of 15.6 (something Sergio never achieved), TS% of 0.556 (Sergio never cracked the .500 mark, it was the 2nd time Nash did) and a win-score of 4.8 - Sergio, in his entire 3 years has accumulated a win-score of 2.3 which is less than half of what Nash accumulated by himself in his 2nd year... Also remember that the 3rd year you talk about for Nash is the shortened season where the guys came to play after a long time off - so he never really got the time to get used to his new situation. A year after that, with the extra time to get used to his new system his TS% went up to a fantastic 0.601, his win-score was a very decent 3.1 and he was on his way to become a consistent star... Again, I wish Sergio nothing but the best - but I think that the comparison to Nash is just wrong - since Nash was a much better shooter from pretty much his 2nd year and has eclipsed everything Sergio achieved to date by his 2nd year...
Classic thread. I wonder if people are still going to dig their feet about Sergio being a starting quality PG, the Pendergraph trade being bad, and Nate holding Sergio back. Its no more obvious now than it was back then, but it was fairly obvious back then!
Huh. My bad. Looks like none of my predictions happened. You could argue "C" did, but then he'd actually have to be playing to lose a fucktastic number of games. The Kings are losing all those games largely without his assistance.
I saw this report a few days ago ... hopefully (yet another) change of scenery will be just the tonic for his career ...
It's always instructive to look at the way others see a player ... especially a player who was so polarizing for so many Portland fans (I include myself here). http://www.sactownroyalty.com/2010/2/16/1313091/kings-are-looking-at-a-sergio#comments
We had to pay to get rid of Sergio and the kings barely play the guard... the guy is a sub par guard who is inconstant and defense is very suspect. He is never going to be a starter in this league and teams don't even want him as a backup. Back to Europe is were he will be soon.
I hope he does get moved somewhere that actually needs a point guard...it would likely be his last chance to make it in the league and show what he can do...
At some point he needs to be better than alternatives... rather than just lucking into a team that has no one better than he is. Sergio is still rather young (less than a year older than Dante and Pendergraph, for example) but his chances are running out. He needs to earn minutes and so far he hasn't been able to do that. Ed O.
I agree, but he can find a lower bar to hurdle over (in the way of alternatives at point guard) on a different team. I'd like to see him go somewhere with very weak alternatives where he could get a shot at some extended minutes on a running team. If he fails yet again in that position he will no longer need to worry about speaking English...
The way I look at it, if Sergio can get to NY, and be with D'Antoni, if he can't make it in that all offense, no defense scenario, his time in the league is over. That is the ultimate environment for him. All about offense. Matador defense. If it doesn't work there, it won't work anywhere.
That site has useful information. It says that Pritchard used Paul Allen's money to make the Sergio trade work. Has Pritchard ever, ever made a trade work the normal way, without a bribe? A lot of that page is talk about whether Beno Udrih would start anywhere. We've heard this before, but they say that Udrih is no better than Sergio at the 1, but Udrih's bigger poisonous contract is immovable, so Sergio sits. Also, Udrih plays 1 and 2, while Sergio only plays 1. For example: The next one is from http://www.sacbee.com/static/weblogs/sports/kings/archives/2010/02/trade-chatter-s.html
Is there ever going to be a weaker link than Beno Udrih? I mean, the guy doesn't SUCK, but very very few players in NBA rotations suck. Ed O.
Duhon has been terrible, for sure... but if you're the Knicks do you want to go from Duhon to Sergio? Or maybe try to get a starting-caliber player? Ed O.
Bribing is the normal way. You pretty much always bribe teams to give you players of theirs that you want...you bribe them with players, with money, with draft picks or with some combination of the three.
I honestly don't watch a lot of Sacremento basketball...but my understanding is that with Beno's contract he's immovable so considered part of the longer term plan there...Sergio was a safety net in case Tyreke sucked...he doesn't, so Sergio is benched. (Obviously if Sergio was head and shoulders above Beno, he'd play, but he isn't) For the record I'm not a Sergio lover...I'd just like, as someone mentioned above, to see him get some minutes on a running, no defense team. Do I think he'd succeed? Doubtful. Would I like to at least see him once get a chance to play in his perfect system in the NBA? Yes.
