Confirming the report Gambo gave last night David Griffin turned down an offer to join the Grizzles front office to stay with the Suns :worthy: http://www.azcentral.com/sports/suns/artic...griffin-ON.html<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Suns Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin turned down Memphis' offer to become its general manager Friday to stay with Phoenix.Memphis' outgoing president of basketball operations, Jerry West, recommended Griffin as the person who should assume control of the team with new Memphis coach Marc Iavaroni, a Suns assistant the past five seasons. Griffin told Memphis owner Michael Heisley on Friday morning that he wished to remain with Phoenix, where he has agreed to a new contract."I was really impressed with Mr. Heisley, Mr. (Stan) Meadows (Heisley's attorney), Jerry West and everybody I dealt with from their organization and you know I'm a big, big believer in Marc," Griffin said. "It came down to some unfinished business (with winning a title in Phoenix). In order to leave that, it had to be the exact right situation and this isn't the right one. It's a tremendous opportunity and somebody can be successful there."Griffin could have been the executive vice president of basketball operations and general manager leading the basketball office in Memphis but chose to be part of the Suns' front office team, which will include a new member when Suns investor and adviser Steve Kerr becomes GM next week."I believe so deeply in Steve and have been so incredibly close to Steve throughout this process," Griffin said. "If that were to happen, this is what we all hoped and expected would happen. I'm excited about it. Steve might not have known that but we all expected that."Griffin acknowledged that his emotional attachments to Phoenix and the Suns played a role. Griffin grew up in west Phoenix with ideas of doing Jerry Colangelo's job. He began his Suns career on the media relations game crew in 1993 and progressed as a communications manager, basketball operations assistant and video coordinator before breaking in as the team's assistant director of player personnel in 2001. The Suns dropped the "assistant" part of the title three years later, and Griffin became assistant general manager before being promoted to vice president of basketball operations last year.Griffin, a main scout for several seasons, handled much of the daily GM duties over the past year while coach and GM Mike D'Antoni focused on coaching.</div>This gives Kerr someone to talk to who has had actual GM experience and someone who is one of the best scouts in the league to turn to for advice.
