To summarize: After two preseason games, I've read on here that our defensive schemes haven't changed at all, still horrible. Stotts says we'll CONTINUE to have 6 coverages, but I thought we only had one all along? Stotts says we'll be more aggressive, do we believe this? Most importantly, I'd pay for a media member to ask Stotts if these changes were inspired from him reading the message boards on the internet. We know Olshey certainly isn't reading/taking advice from here. Excited to see what major changes we notice.
Great to hear!!! I also think having some depth on the team is a factor in this... when DameCJ and maybe other starters are playing 35-40 minutes there isn't the energy to trap or be active. We will have to see what actually happens in the regular season though... I remember Mike Barret saying for 10 years in training camp this would be the season the team will get out and run more....
I remember every year when Nate McMillan said the Blazers were going to run more...and they never did pre-season talk is kind of cheap. We'll see if the defense is actually changed much, and if it has been changed and doesn't perform well at first (entirely possible), we'll see how committed Stotts is to the changes
Stotts has never come close to saying this in the numerous preseason hes been here. Also havent seen them defend the pick n roll this hard before. Also sounds like the front office is pushing for this change, which likely puts Stotts on the hot seat (for the first time in...?) if he doesnt follow through with these changes. He also doesnt have the personnel excuse to fall back on this year. This is a completely unique development.
I thought so too; but then I went back and read the Stotts quote again. And he is actually claiming we have always used multiple coverages, and are now just going to be more "aggressive". I guess it's still confusing. Lillard seems to think we are doing something completely new, but more simple. Stotts seems to be saying we are doing the same thing, but more aggressively? I guess Stotts is saying we have done some of this stuff in the past, but now we will do a lot more of the multiple coverages.
Yes he had played different coverage but his drop defense where he drop his big man under the basket was his premier defense though and that was use 90 percent or more in games. He did change how he played Houston against Harden. Blazers defense was not aggressive type defense under Stotts since he been here.
The fact that Terry Stotts said it was a "difficult decision" to change the Defense after finishing 27th in defensive ranking is worrisome
I don't see any minutes for him because there are too many established players ahead of him. You think he's going to get minutes ahead of Trent, when he can both defend and shoot? Stotts is going to have a hard enough time finding minutes for the vets on the team, let alone worrying about playing a rookie. My bet is that Little and Elleby will both be end of the bench or assigned to G League for awhile to get some PT. In this Covid environment, you never know when an opportunity is going to arise to move up in the chain. Getting some actual game minutes at the G League level may be in their best interests for now.
Stotts has had 2 top ten defensive teams to coach in 8 years here...I think injuries and some weak rotation players factor into it. In my view Terry hasn't looked this animated about a season since we had Chris Kaman and Mo Williams coming off the bench
I'm just kinda kidding and being very hopeful at the same time but if he can start to make adjustments because he has more versatile personnel, I'll be there praising him and calling him Coach Stopps.
That shouldn't be the reason he makes adjustments though, he could've made adjustments all last year, and there was no reason not to considering how horrible our primary defense was.
