What changes? His defense is pretty much on par with Dame’s.

To be clear: I have no issue with Dame taking $50m/year if Portland is willing to give it to him. I take issue with the idea that we should give him pitty for being on a non-contending roster months after he signs a $50m extension.

What changes in a Herro for Dame swap? Portland gets significantly worse.

Yeah, I'm simply saying Dame taking $50 million isn't going to be the thing that prevents us from contending. He would modify his contract if he had to.

The pity would be if Dame is never given the opportunity to make that choice.

I'm not sure I fully agree with that.

    1) Dame making $50m will impact our salary flexibility, especially if we have an owner who is uncomfortable paying the tax.
    2) If Dame takes $50m then realizes next summer we need extra salary room to make us a contender, he doesn't have the option to modify his contract.

I'm pretty sure a player and team can renegotiate their contract any season if both parties agree to it. Just not from March to July.

No option for a player to take less money to help his team. So no, Dame can't help Portland out next summer by taking less money so we can sign another free agent to make us a contender.

If he truly wants to maximize our cap flexiblity, he would need to let his current deal run out and then sign for a reduced salary.

Hmm... It seems like they could allow for a player option in the extension, could they not?

A player option to reduce his salary? No, they can't.

The first time Dame could take less money to help Portland is the summer of 2024 if he opts out of his $49m player option. Of course, that would mean he doesn't sign an extension before then. I'm guessing there is near 0% of that happening, making his "I would take less if we could get a star" statement a bit of a reach.

If the Gobert deal is any indication, I'm at peace with whatever decision Dame makes.

He’s made his money. Now it would depend upon how serious he is about winning or if it’s all just talk.

True....but he knows he has a massive audience and knows what the reaction to something like this will be. He is smart and doesn't just randomly post stuff like this on a whim.

I get it and I'd like to think I'd take a paycut myself. However, I shy away from telling other people they should turn down significant money, even though it's really easy to do.

We haven't even proven if he took a $20m/year paycut we could build a championship team still.

I’d be frustrated too if I wanted to compete and kept seeing guys get traded only to be brought back and fail again.

Nothing against GP II, but from Dames perspective I’m wondering…

I've made it clear I'm not a big fan of trading Dame in order to contend. Having said that, if Dame wants out and we can get players and 5 first rounds picks (4 unprotected), for him, then I would totally understand.
