You're both wrong. I think we're talking about The Practice. Not Game of Thrones. Not the Acolyte. We're talking about The Practice. We're sitting in here supposed to be talking about Ted Lasso, and we're in here talking about The Practice.
Ted Lasso might have the greatest single season of any sports TV show but I thought season 2 was universally thought of as very average and the 3rd season is panned by just about everyone I hear from. Granted there aren't a ton of great sports shows from TV (wonder why that is with movies having some great ones) but I can't think it's at the top of the list. As someone else pointed out, Friday Night Lights is probably my favorite but even that show suffered from a horrible season 2 (writers strike destroyed that season). Sports Night is a close 2nd place but that one burned hot and fast thanks to Sorkin bolting for West Wing.
If you like baseball and can read subtitles I highly recommend Cross Game, which is a Mitsuru Adachi joint. Fifty episodes about what is best in sports: fumbling the girl next door while she teaches you how to pitch at a high school level.
I'll tell you what... Shoresy (on Hulu, from the makers of Letterkenny) has been perhaps my favorite show of the past two years. It's about a senior league hockey player/team in Northern Ontario. It's fantastic! The cadence of the show is a little more stylized than some are used to (Letterkenny fans will get it), but once you get the pacing, it's sublime. Its language and presentation is a bit rougher than what you find in Ted Lasso, but it has similar heart. I really recommend it. Go Blueberry Bulldogs!
I don't have Hulu but I might just need to find a way to watch it. Sounds like something I'd like. Thanks for the recommendation.
I watched a couple episodes last night. It was pretty good, pretty funny. But also a bit hard to follow and kind of annoying the way the characters bicker back and forth over and over. The main character Shoresy has a voice that only a mom could love. It's like nails on a chalkboard. The storyline does remind me of Ted Lasso. I'll continue to give it a shot and watch a few more episodes.
Glad you checked it out! Yeah, it's a spin-off of the Shoresy side character made popular in Letterkenny, and it's definitely an unusual show in terms of style (I also used subtitles in the beginning so I could catch all the Canadianisms, of which there are A LOT). I found myself in a similar place reacting against the style in the first few episodes. For what it's worth, once I accepted that the back-and-forth bickering functioned as playful repartee and the Shoresy love language, it just totally clicked and it began to feel like tv poetry (probably around episode 4 or 5 of first season). Perhaps it will for you as well... or of course, it may never really lock in, such are tv tastes. You're right to give it a few more episodes, and you almost have to give it a full season since the seasons are so short.
Watched the first season and it was Entourage meets sports but then I never went back to it after that. Pure popcorn entertainment with no real value.
