Hopefully it's just a negotiating tactic by Terry's agent. I'd be shocked if the team didn't retain Terry Stotts as coach.
I see no way we let Stotts go. All indications are th players love Terry and Neil has a good relationship with him. Add to that we just exceeded expectations greatly in a rebuilding year. Our star player has gone out of his way to vouch for Terry and Terry's comments following the elimination indicated how proud of the work ethic he was and how bright he believed our future to be. The Blazers will get a deal done.
First the cj for jahlil okafor nonsense. Now this. Fellow blazer fans, use your head. Be logical please. Oh yeah by the way, I think we should trade dame for Ricky Rubio....
Hey guys. I just read a rumor suggesting the Blazers should trade Dame for Ricky Rubio! Or was it Ricky Ricardo?
Hope the rumored 5yr/20M is not true. Think Stotts should atleast start at 5M and probably worth near 7M per year.
I'm a fan of Stotts. I like the guy a lot, and he seems to be a pretty good coach. I thought he did a great job this last year and I thought he made solid adjustments in the playoffs. With that said, is he a championship caliber coach? I have no idea. My biggest complaint is our defense. It's severely lacking. I look at Golden State and I look at the Clippers and I see two teams that were able to clamp down when it mattered. Part of that was our lack of scoring options, which made the task easier, but it was also some very solid defensive schemes. But who would we even replace him with? Thibs is gone. Vogel?
I don't think this is true....but I have seen something similar as a 49er fan. Harbaugh turned the team around and everyone thought he was a magnificient coach, and rumors came out about the 49ers trading him, most people thought they were bull, but then a year or 2 later he was fired and those rumors were legit.
To me it seems that he gets a lot more out of our offense than it looks like we should get on paper. We have 2 talented scorers, but most good offensive teams go deeper than that in terms of offensive talent. Portland was 7th in the league in offensive efficiency. But we were 20th in defensive efficiency, and it seems we could have been better. I know we don't have shot blocker but we have a lot of high energy athletic guys. A lot of the teams above us don't have any defensive stars either.
I'm just wondering if maybe the Blazers aren't sure if Terry is their guy long term. Maybe they think he isn't capable of captaining a true winner? Everyone loves the guy. I think he has done a solid job. Is he Steve Kerr? Can he take this team the distance?
I think he deserves a raise as well. But I can see why ownership might balk on giving him a long term deal. Coaches get fired all the time, whether they are good or not. So I can see where they might not want to give a long term deal. I think the most you would want to pay a coach is two years.....after you fire him. So maybe a revolving 2-3 year contract so he always has some security, but nothing too crazy in case he needs to be let go?
Steve Kerr definitely turned GS around and deserves a lot of credit. With that said, after seeing Steph in Games 4 and 5 ... it's hard to imagine many NBA-caliber coaches losing with that squad as long as Curry's on the court. "What play should we run? "Oh, run a pick and roll to get Steph switched on a big and watch what happens next." "Deal."
After getting the Raptors to the Eastern Conference finals, I doubt it....as amazing as it would be to have him as a defensive assistant coach next to stotts
Stotts has the makings to become an elite coach in the NBA....if he can take a young rag tag team of misfits that were supposed to win no more than 26 games (and analysts were saying they were being nice when they gave that number) to the second round of the playoffs and stand toe to toe with champions rocky style, then he can bring a more experienced, tried team to the finals and the Larry O'Brien trophy...pay him already
Will anyone even know until someone give him a shot with a great team? I don't buy this, he is great for a rebuild stuff. What great team with all stars has he coached to fail at the elite championship level? none that I know of, but he has been a assistant to ring team and another finals team. Id say he at least should be given a shot prior to saying he isn't that type of coach... I think he can be and I hope we give him the shot.
Steve Kerr gets to much credit...he was hired to coach a very talented elite team...the players have made his job easy...if he inherited a lottery team I don't think he would be looking so good at the moment...hell I don't think he could have done half the job Terry has done with portland
If we're hoping to lure a big free agent, the last thing we need is a coaching vacancy. Just pay the man.
