Kelly has a buy-out in his contract. He wouldn't be "breaking" anything. OU could also "break" that contract by firing him. Lucky for UO, Kelly has made the school millions of money, enrollment is skyrocketing, and Oregon football is now nationally known. Again ... is loyalty a one-way street? I find it naive for anybody to think that a hot commodity at a school that was an after-thought in football until 2007 wouldn't be getting calls from the NFL. Plus, Chip has insinuated before that the NFL intrigues him. If you're looking for loyalty in a coach, become a Penn State fan. Of course, that didn't end up very well, either, and Paterno did accept an NFL job in 1972, only to change his mind 3 weeks later.
The Ducks were mediocre before Kelly became OC. One very good year with Harrington, and one great year with Harrington, and then this. 5 Years Prior to Kelly 2006 7 6 (lost Las Vegas Bowl 38-8 to BYU - a low point, and I was in Vegas for that game. People wanted Bellotti fired at that point.) 2005 10 2 (lost Holiday Bowl) 2004 5 6 (no bowl game) 2003 8 5 (lost Sun Bowl) 2002 7 6 (lost Seattle Bowl) 5 Years With Kelly 2011 12 2 (won Rose Bowl) 2010 12 1 (lost BCS title game) 2009 10 3 (lost Rose Bowl) 2008 10 3 (won Holiday Bowl) 2007 9 4 (won Sun Bowl - ranked #1 in BCS at 8-1, then Dennis Dixon, who had been mediocre at Oregon prior to Chip, got hurt while Heisman front-runner) The Ducks were stagnant/mediocre prior to Chip coming to UO. The best move the administration made was forcing Bellotti up to the AD spot and offering Chip the HC job. Next year, Oregon will again be a pre-season Top Ten team. It's all Chip's doing at this point.
hey people... there is no Tooth Fairy & Santa was your dad Three cheers for Chip Kelly! He's been the greatest coach in Oregon history. It was amazing to see the program literally take off in his first year as OC. Every year since has been better. Not that I'd be a bitter dickhead if it didn't happen, but hoping/expecting next year to be the best yet. On top of that I love hearing from the kids say how much they love and appreciate him and what he's done for them. Seeing the graduation rate of Duck players go up is also something that makes me happy the best to Chip in all things! STOMP
