No. 8 SMU becomes last Division I team to lose

SMU coach Larry Brown watched with a mixture of disbelief and amazement as Temple students rushed the court when the final buzzer sounded.

"I almost got in it," Brown said. "I never thought that would ever happen."

That's what happens when a team comes to town with a perfect record and leave with its first loss.

Eighth-ranked SMU became the last Division I team to lose this season when Devin Coleman scored a career-high 23 points and led Temple to an 89-80 win Sunday.

No. 13 SMU rebounds from 1st loss by beating Memphis 80-68

SMU coach Larry Brown was happy with what he saw from his players before halftime. After that, not so much.

Still, the opening surge was more than enough for the No. 13 Mustangs to rebound from their first loss of the season. They led for all but 38 seconds in an 80-68 victory over Memphis on Saturday night.

Houston rallies to upset No. 12 SMU, 71-68

Houston trailed by 11 points early in the second half and appeared headed for its second loss to No. 12 SMU this season.

That was when they started to fight back.

Devonta Pollard scored 23 points and Damyean Dotson added 13 as Houston rallied for a 71-68 victory over SMU on Monday night, just the second loss of the season for the Mustangs.

Cooke scores 24 as No. 24 Dayton beats George Mason 98-64

If there was ever a doubt as to how No. 24 Dayton would respond with its leading scorer coming off the bench for the first time this season, those concerns were erased early as Charles Cooke scored 18 of his game-high 24 points in the first half of the Flyers' 98-64 victory over George Mason on Saturday night.

Milton, Moore help No. 12 SMU rout South Florida 92-58

There were a lot of things Larry Brown could appreciate about the way SMU played against South Florida on Sunday.

Especially, the way the 12th-ranked Mustangs shared the ball in rebounding from their second loss of the season with a 92-58 rout of the struggling Bulls.

Tulsa rallies to hand No. 16 SMU 1st home loss 82-77

Pat Birt envisioned beating SMU when he sat behind the Tulsa bench a year ago for the Golden Hurricane's loss to the Mustangs with the American Athletic Conference regular-season title on the line.

Birt had a big hand in making that happen Wednesday night, hitting a crucial 3-pointer and scoring 12 of his 17 points after halftime to help Tulsa overcome an eight-point deficit in the second half of an 82-77 victory against No. 16 SMU.

No. 16 SMU snaps Gonzaga's 6-game streak with 69-60 win

With his SMU team ineligible for the postseason, a February visit from Gonzaga figured to be the closest thing to an NCAA Tournament game Nic Moore could expect to experience this year.

Then the Mustangs lost at home to Tulsa, and the game with the Zags turned into something else.

"We all gathered around and said, `We don't lose twice on our home court," Moore said.

The 5-foot-9 senior guard scored 25 points with 11 assists to lead No. 16 SMU to a 69-60 victory that snapped Gonzaga's six-game winning streak in a non-conference matchup of league leaders Saturday night

UConn beats No. 21 SMU 68-62 in AAC

Amida Brimah decided to take the tape off his injured right hand during Thursday morning's shootaround.

That night, UConn's 7-foot junior, playing in his sixth game since missing more than a month with a broken middle finger, had 16 points, eight rebounds and five blocks as the Huskies improved its NCAA Tournament resume with a 68-62 victory over No. 21 SMU.

Nic Moore has 22 points for No. 21 SMU in 74-63 win over ECU

While clearly biased, SMU coach Larry Brown and teammateMarkus Kennedy are shocked every time they hear talk of national player of the year candidates without senior point guard Nic Moore even being mentioned.

"I just kind of laugh," Brown said. "Look at all of the dynamics that have gone into this year, what he's done. He's been as good as any player in the country in my mind."

Moore had 22 points, including four 3-pointers after halftime when the 21st-ranked Mustangs took control in a 74-63 victory over East Carolina on Sunday. He also had seven assists with some nifty bounce passes, took a charge and altered a few shots when East Carolina coach Jeff Lebo thought his team would have layups.

Ben Moore, Sterling Brown lead No. 24 SMU past Tulane 74-53

NCAA probation leaves No. 24 SMU with trying to win the American Athletic Conference regular-season title as its biggest remaining goal.

The Mustangs, who beat Tulane 74-53 on Sunday, will see their season end early because of sanctions that bar the team from playing in any postseason competition including the conference tournament.

No. 24 SMU beats UConn 80-54 on senior night for Nic Moore

Nic Moore remembers his redshirt season at SMU, when he would sit on the bench with Markus Kennedy and joke about counting the sparse home crowds.

There was a full house when Moore and Kennedy played their final home game for No. 24 SMU on Thursday night.

The senior duo that has been with coach Larry Brown for all four of his seasons during an incredible turnaround with the Mustangs won their Moody Coliseum finale, 80-54 over Connecticut. It was SMU's 50th home win during their three seasons playing.

Cold-shooting Cincinnati gets win over No. 24 SMU

All season long, Cincinnati frittered games away at the end. Despite missing shot after shot, the Bearcats managed to hang on for once.

Point guard Troy Caupain scored 14 points despite missing all of his shots from beyond the arc, and Cincinnati overcame poor shooting to beat No. 24 SMU 61-54 on Sunday, bolstering the Bearcats' NCAA Tournament chances while ending the Mustangs' season.

No. 24 Cincinnati pulls away to 74-51 win over Albany

Once Cincinnati applied a little pressure, everything became easy.

Jacob Evans III had nine points during a run that put Cincinnati in control midway through the second half, and the 24th-ranked Bearcats overcame cold shooting and a sloppy start to beat Albany 74-51 on Monday night.

Rose's 26 leads Temple to 89-86 upset of Florida State

Little had gone right for the Temple Owls before they gathered around coach Fran Dunphy during a timeout. It would have been easy for them to lament their woes.

Instead, as Shizz Alston Jr. recalled, their message to each other was cloaked in defiance.

"We're on a big stage, we're not going out like this," Alston said after Temple's 89-86 victory over No. 25 Florida State on Thursday in the first game of the NIT Season Tip-Off. "We want to fight back."

Enechionyia lifts Temple over No. 19 West Virginia, 81-77

Obi Enechionyia and his Temple teammates beat two Top 25 teams to win the NIT Season Tip-Off.

"It's a confidence boost," Enechionyia said Friday after he had 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead Temple to an 81-77 upset of No. 19 West Virginia in the championship game.

Cincinnati upsets No. 19 Iowa State 55-54 (OT)

    - Iowa State is playing defense better than it has in years.

The Cyclones' offense has been uncharacteristically sluggish at times though, putting their school-record streak in the Top 25 in jeopardy.

Jacob Evans III made two free throws with 20 seconds left in overtime and Cincinnati upset No. 19 Iowa State 55-54 on Thursday night, the Cyclones' second straight loss.
