Mahan Scores 32 As UCF Stuns No. 15 Florida State 86-74

UCF hadn’t played in 13 days, yet the Knights’ top players looked as if they were in midseason form in knocking off a Florida State team that hadn’t lost at home in nearly two years.

Brandon Mahan scored 26 of his career-high 32 points in the second half and freshman Isaiah Adams added 22 points as UCF beat No. 15 Florida State 86-74 on Saturday night, ending the Seminoles’ 27-game home winning streak.

Marcus Sasser, Caleb Mills lead No. 6 Houston past UCF 63-54

Kelvin Sampson isn't interested in compiling style points as sixth-ranked Houston navigates the start of the season while dealing with COVID-19 issues that have limited the team's practice time.

It's wasn't pretty Saturday; however, the Cougars (7-0, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) overcame cold shooting with stellar defense to beat UCF 63-54 and deny the Knights (3-2, 1-1) a second win over a Top 25 opponent in a week.

Rachal's late free throws lift Tulsa past No. 5 Houston

Frank Haith has coached various teams to some huge wins over the years, and he wanted everyone to know how much Tulsa's gritty performance against unbeaten No. 5 Houston meant to his team.

“This one was special,” Haith said of Tulsa's 65-64 win on Tuesday night. “Houston is one of the best teams in the country. I hope everyone understands that.”

No. 5 Houston rebounds from 1st loss with 74-60 win at SMU

Houston coach Kelvin Sampson spent a lot of time at halftime talking to his team about rebounding and being aggressive. The No. 5 Cougars responded.

“The second half, I just liked our execution, I liked the ball movement and I liked our rebounding,” Sampson said. “We looked like a Houston basketball team.”

Quentin Grimes hit a go-ahead 3-pointer to ignite a 10-0 run to start the second half, and the Cougars rebounded from their first loss with a 74-60 victory over previously undefeated SMU on Sunday night.

Sasser, Grimes lead No. 8 Houston past Temple 68-51

Kelvin Sampson watched his Houston team win another rout and found “two or three areas” of needed improvement. Clean those up and another number comes into focus for the Cougars: a potential No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

“If we get better in the areas we need to be good at,” Houston’s coach said, “all that stuff takes care of itself.”

Marcus Sasser and Quentin Grimes each scored 15 points and No. 8 Houston rolled to its sixth consecutive victory, 68-51 over Temple on Saturday.

Tyson scores 31 points, No. 6 Houston routs Tulane, 83-60

When seldom-used transfer guard Cameron Tyson pulled up to shoot from behind the 3-point line, players up and down Houston's bench rose to their feet in anticipation and celebrated wildly as the net billowed from one made shot after another.

Tyson scored a career-high 31 points, hitting a career-best nine 3-pointers, and No. 6 Houston routed Tulane 83-60 on Thursday night.

Gardner, East Carolina upset No. 5 Houston 82-73

Jayden Gardner and East Carolina didn't get to savor a sea of court-storming home fans after claiming a huge upset. Instead, the Pirates left the court in a somewhat subdued celebration — until letting loose in the locker room, that is.

"I'm out of breath," Gardner said with a smile.

Gardner had 21 points and 15 rebounds to help ECU stun fifth-ranked Houston 82-73 on Wednesday night, securing the Pirates' first win against a ranked opponent in nearly two decades. It was the Cougars' first loss of 2021, a performance that befuddled coach Kelvin Sampson.
