Shabazz Napier overcomes cold 1st half as UConn keeps Temple quiet

Shabazz Napier scored only two points in the first half and finished the game shooting 3-for-11 from the field. Connecticut coach Kevin Ollie was never worried about his star guard.

Napier finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists as the 21st-ranked Huskies denied Temple its second straight upset over a nationally ranked team with a 68-55 victory Thursday night.

No. 22 Memphis beats Rutgers 64-59

Memphis coach Josh Pastner is not taking his latest 20-win season for granted.

"It's not a birthright, it is a special thing," Pastner said after the 22nd-ranked Tigers beat Rutgers 64-59 on Thursday night. "I love our players for doing that. They got us 20. It's (a school-record) 14th straight year for the program. It's a beautiful thing."

Russ Smith's jumper in final seconds helps Louisville upend Cincy

Three weeks ago, Louisville fought back from a 17-point second-half deficit against Cincinnati before fizzling down the stretch and losing a heartbreaker at home.

On Saturday, it was time for the Cardinals to return the favor.

No. 7 Cincinnati fought back from a 10-point second-half deficit to take a 55-52 lead with 90 seconds left in the game. Freshman Troy Caupain made two free throws with 11 seconds left to give the Bearcats a 57-56 lead.

On Louisville's last possession, Terry Rozier passed the ball back to Russ Smith, catching the notoriously stingy Cincinnati defense off guard.

Smith hit an open 18-foot jumper with 2.2 seconds left to give Louisville a 58-57 victory.

Nichols leads No. 22 Memphis past Temple in OT

Temple put a scare in another top team in the American Athletic Conference -- this time the No. 22 Memphis Tigers.

It took overtime and a career night from Memphis freshman Austin Nichols for the Tigers to escape Saturday night with an 82-79 victory over the Owls.

Russ Smith scores 24 as No. 7 Louisville blows out Temple

When preseason All-America guard Russ Smith is playing his best, defending national champion Louisville looks like one of the nation's top teams again.

When he gets the kind of help he got from teammates Montrezl Harrell and Terry Rozier in Thursday night's 88-66 rout of Temple, the seventh-ranked Cardinals appear nearly unstoppable.

No. 21 Memphis can't recover as Houston goes on late run

Danuel House wants the ball in late-game situations for Houston. He certainly delivered Thursday night.

House scored 19 points, including an important 3-pointer down the stretch, and the Cougars closed with a surge to beat No. 21 Memphis 77-68.

No. 21 Memphis completes season sweep of No. 7 Louisville

The Memphis Tigers found a way to quiet a bunch of hometown critics with coach Josh Pastner's biggest win yet. Rick Pitino and his seventh-ranked Louisville Cardinals are kicking themselves for blowing a game they thought they had won.

Chris Crawford hit a 3-pointer with 1:36 left to put Memphis ahead to stay, and the 21st-ranked Tigers beat Louisville 72-66 Saturday, sweeping the season series from the Cardinals. The Tigers were coming off a loss at Houston on Thursday night that had them eager to hit the court about 40 hours later.

Shabazz Napier helps UConn upend No. 11 Cincinnati

UConn didn't score a basket in the last 7 1/2 minutes against No. 11 Cincinnati on Saturday, and still won the game.

Shabazz Napier scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Huskies to the 51-45 upset of the 11th-ranked Bearcats.

Nic Moore, Markus Kennedy lead No. 25 SMU over Central Florida

SMU won its first home game as a ranked team in almost 30 years, and the Mustangs are gearing up for a return to the NCAA tournament after a 21-year absence.

That's why coach Larry Brown and his players weren't exactly thrilled with a 70-55 win over Central Florida on Saturday.

Russ Smith heats up to help No. 11 Louisville dump No. 18 SMU

Louisville leading scorer Russ Smith was still feeling light-headed and dizzy after Wednesday night's game. He had felt that way pretty much all day.

Smith overcame his stomach illness, and a rough first half, by hitting all six of his 3-point attempts after halftime as the 11th-ranked Cardinals rallied from a big early deficit to become the first opponent to win in SMU's renovated home. They beat the 18th-ranked Mustangs 84-71.

UConn's Shabazz Napier and Niels Giffey made their senior night one to remember.

Sean Kilpatrick's 34 key senior night as Cincy dumps Memphis

Sean Kilpatrick scored a season-high 34 points in his final home game, and a trio of senior starters steadied No. 15 Cincinnati to a 97-84 victory over No. 20 Memphis on Thursday night that left the American Athletic Conference race tied with a game to go.

The Bearcats (25-5, 14-3 AAC) remained tied atop the first-year league with No. 11 Louisville. The Cardinals won 84-71 at No. 18 Southern Methodist on Wednesday night and finish at home against No. 19 Connecticut. The Bearcats close the regular season at Rutgers.

Louisville clinches share of AAC regular-season title with rout of UConn

Russ Smith really didn't care about being top scorer in his home finale with Louisville because passing to open teammates was the better choice.

The star guard is showing he can be pass-first when needed.

Just ask Cardinals forward Montrezl Harrell, who scored 20 points while Smith recorded a career-high 13 assists as No. 11 Louisville routed No. 19 Connecticut 81-48 on Saturday to claim a share of the American Athletic Conference championship.

Coin flip gives Cincy top seed in AAC tourney

No. 15 Cincinnati won a conference title for the first time since 2004, and coach Mick Cronin didn't care that it was shared.

The Bearcats (26-5, 15-3) were picked to finish fourth in the American Athletic Conference preseason poll, a league that currently has five teams ranked in the top 20.

Cincinnati clinched a share of the regular-season crown with 24 points from senior Sean Kilpatrick in a tough 70-66 win over Rutgers on Saturday. The Bearcats will be the top seed in the conference tournament.

No. 13 Cincinnati clips UCF as Sean Kilpatrick keys win

While a junk defense may have contained Cincinnati's Sean Kilpatrick, it left Kevin Johnson open for a key 3-pointer.

Johnson's long jumper with 36 second left, along with 21 points from Kilpatrick helped the No. 13 Bearcats defeat a determined UCF team 61-58 in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference tournament on Thursday.

No. 5 Louisville routs Rutgers in AAC quarterfinals

The fifth-ranked Louisville Cardinals had everything working so well against Rutgers that even a near mistake turned into an amazing play.

Stephan Van Treese went up for a lob pass looking for a dunk only to have Montrezl Harrell fly in and slam the ball through.

"I'm not happy about that," Van Treese said. "I thought he was throwing it to me, and I didn't even see Montrezl and he just dunked on me. And I thought, `Man, that's not fair."

Louisville routed Rutgers 92-31 on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference tournament, holding the Scarlet Knights to their lowest scoring game since Jan. 25, 1982.

No. 21 UConn routs No. 19 Memphis for season sweep

UConn coach Kevin Ollie wanted to switch up something in the Huskies' third game against Memphis this season, so he gave senior Niels Giffey only his eighth start.

Giffey paid off his coach's move by scoring a career-high 24 points, including six 3-pointers, as No. 21 UConn finished off a season sweep of 19th-ranked Memphis by routing the Tigers 72-53 Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference tournament.

Stiggers has 19 to lead Houston past No. 25 SMU

Houston wasn't going to let No. 25 SMU win three games against them this season.

And the Cougars' win on Thursday means they're the ones advancing in the American Athletic Conference tournament, Jherrod Stiggers scored 19 points, including five 3-pointers, and Houston upset the Mustangs 68-64 in the quarterfinals.
