Shane Carden throws for 445 yards as East Carolina holds off UConn

Coach Ruffin McNeill doesn't care about impressing the committee that will decide if No. 18 East Carolina deserves a major bowl berth.

"We just want to win by one," McNeill said, "and get up out of there."

That's not far from what happened Thursday night against Connecticut.

The Pirates needed a strong fourth quarter -- and another huge performance from Shane Carden -- to pull away from the pesky Huskies, 31-21.

CB Byron Jones out for season

Connecticut cornerback Byron Jones will undergo surgery on his left shoulder and miss the remainder of the season.

Coach Bob Diaco says the Huskies senior captain has a history of shoulder problems and was injured during the first half of Thursday night's 31-21 loss at No. 18 East Carolina.

    Philip Montgomery to coach Tulsa

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane have hired Baylor offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery to be their next football coach.

Montgomery has been calling the plays for one of the most prolific offenses in college football. Baylor is the only team in FBS to be ranked in the top four in the country in total offense each of the last four seasons.

The Bears averaged 48.8 points and 581.3 yards per game this season under Montgomery, who just completed his seventh season and also served as the quarterbacks coach.

Paxton Lynch tallies 7 TDs as Memphis edges BYU in brawl-marred bowl

They battled for 60 minutes, then again for two overtimes and literally fought after the final play.

And for Memphis, the end result was a win 76 years in the making.

Paxton Lynch threw four touchdown passes and rushed for three more scores, Jake Elliott kicked a 54-yard field goal to end the first extra session and Memphis wasted a pair of double-digit leads before rallying to beat BYU 55-48 in the inaugural Miami Beach Bowl on Monday.

Houston rallies for improbable 35-34 win in Armed Forces Bowl

Houston quarterback Greg Ward had just thrown his third touchdown in a flurried comeback that included two recovered onside kicks in a row to get the Cougars within a point in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl.

Interim coach David Gibbs never had a second thought on what to do with less than a minute left in the game.

"We decided to go for two at the end because we had the momentum," Gibbs said.

Deontay Greenberry, already with two TD catches in that final 3:41, made a leaping catch in the back of the end zone for the two-point conversion and the Cougars beat Pittsburgh 35-34 on Friday with an improbable comeback -- the largest in an FBS game this season, and largest ever in a bowl game that didn't go into overtime.

Memphis will punish 12 Tigers players for their roles in a brawl after their victory over BYU in the inaugural Miami Beach Bowl following an internal review by the university.

Officials announced Tuesday that they had identified 12 players who took part in the brawl that followed Memphis' 55-48 double overtime win on Dec. 22.

BYU had no immediate comment on how many Cougars players might face punishment.

Emotions spilled over after DaShaughn Terry sealed Memphis' win by picking off BYU quarterback Christian Stewart in the second OT. Dozens of people from both sidelines spilled toward the middle of the field, many punching and grabbing. Cameras caught BYU defensive back Kai Nacua -- who had blood streaming from his face -- coming from behind to punch Memphis tight end Alan Cross in the head while Cross was being restrained by someone from the Tigers' staff.

Both Memphis and BYU reviewed the brawl with help from the American Athletic Conference.

Paxton Lynch throws 3 TDs as Memphis (6-0) routs No. 13 Ole Miss 37-24

Paxton Lynch and the upstart Memphis Tigersshowed that their high-scoring offense can work against anybody.

Even a nationally ranked opponent from the mighty Southeastern Conference.

Lynch threw for 384 yards and three touchdowns to lead Memphis over No. 13 Mississippi 37-24 in a convincing victory that showed the Tigers might just be the best team in the country that isn't in a Power Five conference.

No. 22 Temple pulls away late to beat East Carolina 24-14

No. 22 Temple finally cracked the Top 25 because of its defense and its ground game. Some timely passing will help the Owls stay there.

P.J. Walker threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Robby Anderson, and Temple scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to rally past East Carolina 24-14 on Thursday night.

Lynch's career day leads No. 18 Memphis past Tulsa 66-42

Paxton Lynch wasn't completely satisfied with how he played Friday night.

If completing 32 of 44 passes for four touchdowns and a career-high 447 yards wasn't enough to please the Memphis quarterback, then the rest of the American Athletic Conference has its work cut out for it.

Lynch's career day came in a 66-42 victory for the No. 18 Tigers (7-0, 3-0) over Tulsa. It was the highest- scoring game in major college football season, according to STATS, and it featured 1,248 yards of total offense from a pair of teams each ranked in the top 10 nationally in total offense.

No. 16 Memphis beats Tulane 41-13 after another slow start

The 16th-ranked Memphis Tigers kicked off to Tulane to start the game, then waited. And waited. And waited some more before finally getting the ball back with most of the first quarter gone.

    Talk about cooling off.

Paxton Lynch threw for 343 yards and a touchdown and ran for 43 more as Memphis routed Tulane 41-13 Saturday night after falling behind 13-0 after the first 16 minutes.

Greg Ward Jr., defense lead No. 18 Houston in shutout of Vandy

Greg Ward Jr. and the Houston offense have captured all the attention for being able to score in bunches.

The Cougar defense showed Saturday night it deserved some attention as well.

Ward threw for a score and ran for another and No. 18 Houston's defense forced four turnovers in a 34-0 romp over Vanderbilt.

Walker throws 4 TD passes, No. 23 Temple tops SMU 60-40

Freshman Jager Gardner had zero yards rushing for the season when he took a handoff 94 yards away from the end zone onTemple's second offensive play.

So naturally, top running back Jahad Thomas knew exactly what was going to happen.

"It's crazy because I actually called it the play right before, 'I feel like he's going to pop this," Thomas said. "And then he did it."

P.J. Walker followed the longest run in Temple history with four touchdown passes and a scoring run of his own, and the Owls (No. 22 CFP, No. 23 AP) pulled away from SMU 60-40 on Friday night.

No. 25 Houston improves to 9-0, beats Cincinnati 33-30

After six weeks of easy wins, Tom Herman's Houston Cougars (No. 25 CFP, No. 18 AP) found themselves in a struggle.

Under pressure from locked-in quarterback Gunner Kiel, who had a career high 523 passing and four touchdown passes already, with two minutes to go, Houston needed to make a stand in the fourth quarter to preserve their undefeated season.

Herman's defense came through, forcing four straight incompletions on the final drive to preserve a 33-30 win over Cincinnati on Saturday and remain unbeaten.

Reynolds scores 4 TDs to lead No. 20 Navy past SMU 55-14

Keenan Reynolds had just burst into the end zone to set the NCAA record for career rushing touchdowns, and the last thing on his mind was clutching the football as a keepsake.

Fortunately, Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo had the situation well in hand. He sent the team's equipment manager onto the field to secure a souvenir the Reynolds family will cherish for years to come.

Reynolds scored four rushing touchdowns to boost his career total to 81, and Navy (No. 20 CFP, No. 22 AP) beat SMU 55-14 Saturday to remain undefeated in the American Athletic Conference.

No. 24 Houston rallies for 35-34 win over No. 21 Memphis

Kyle Postma had only seen the field late games as a quarterback over the last month and before that, it was at wide receiver.

The sophomore delivered when Houston needed him most.

Postma, who came in for injured starter Greg Ward Jr. just before halftime, rushed for the go-ahead score and threw for another to rally Houston from 20 points down to a 35-34 win over Memphis on Saturday night.

Now that Navy (No. 16 CFP, No. 19 AP) has dispatched Tulsa in dominating fashion, the Midshipmen can focus on bigger goals.
