Florida Atlantic's Kalib Woods, facing battery charges, reinstated to team

    upload_2017-9-4_22-2-3.jpeg

Florida Atlantic has reinstated wide receiver Kalib Woods to the football team, even though he still faces felony battery charges stemming from a fight in January.

Owls coach Lane Kiffin says Woods will not be on scholarship.

Woods is accused of striking two men in January, in what was described by one of the alleged victims as retaliation over a foul that was committed in a pickup basketball game about a year earlier. One of the victims said he needed surgery to reconstruct a broken jaw; the other said he was hospitalized for several days with internal injuries.

Ed Oliver's bond with Houston is stronger than ever

Hurricane Harvey sent the University of Houston's football team rushing off to Austin for sanctuary under the same roof as the coach who left the program just 10 months earlier.

It could have been -- and maybe even should have been -- an uncomfortable reunion with Tom Herman, the ex who spurned the Cougars for the state's flagship program after two seasons, 22 wins and many promises he wouldn't leave. That potential for discomfort wasn't lost on those who coordinated their plans to seek shelter from the storm, choosing the University of Texas from among at least four other in-state options.

"That was a little bit in the back of my mind," Houston athletic director Hunter Yurachek said. "There were some hurt feelings when Tom left. But I think everyone handled it very well."

No. 22 USF starts slowly before rolling over Illinois 47-23

A big night passing for Quinton Flowers, three 100-yard rushers and another lopsided victory for No. 22 South Florida.

There was plenty for Charlie Strong to like Friday night in a 47-23 rout of Illinois, but nothing resonated more than the way Flowers led the Bulls back from a Hurricane Irma-layoff.

Ferguson leads Memphis to 48-45 upset of No. 25 UCLA

UCLA and Josh Rosen came in with the reputation and the ranking. The Memphis Tigers think it is time they got some respect and notoriety.

Rosen was unable to put together a fourth-quarter comeback like he did in the opener against Texas A&M, and Memphis beat the No. 25 Bruins 48-45 on Saturday. The nationally televised game showcased a Tigers program that is 2-0 and has beaten a ranked team in each of the last three seasons.

Tice, Flowers lead No. 21 USF to 43-7 rout of Temple

An improved defense is setting up No. 21 South Florida for a potentially big season.

The Bulls forced six turnovers and held defending American Athletic Conference champion Temple to minus-4 yards rushing Thursday night in a 43-7 victory that extends the team's winning streak to a school-record nine straight games.

Flowers, No. 18 USF remain perfect, rout ECU 61-31

No. 18 South Florida's typically stout defense sprung more than a few leaks against East Carolina.

So the Bulls reverted to what worked pretty well under Willie Taggart last year -- they outscored the Pirates.

Quinton Flowers threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, and USF extended its school-record winning streak to 10 by routing East Carolina 61-31 on Saturday.

No. 25 UCF routs Cincinnati 51-23 in rain-shortened game

The only thing that could stop UCF was a storm.

McKenzie Milton threw a career-high five touchdown passes -- four in the first half. Tre'Quan Smith caught three touchdown passes and ran for another score . And No. 25 UCF scored every time it had the ball until the storms move in Saturday night and prematurely ended its 51-23 victory over Cincinnati.

Flowers leads USF over Cincinnati 33-3 for 11th straight win

Quinton Flowers eclipsed 3,000 yards career rushing and scored one touchdown Saturday night to help No. 18 South Florida shrug off a slow start and extend the nation's longest winning streak to 11 games with a 33-3 victory over Cincinnati.

Memphis uses 5 turnovers to hand No. 25 Navy 1st loss, 30-27

Riley Ferguson didn't throw one, but he was certainly enjoying seeing a late-game interception Saturday.

The Memphis quarterback was watching helplessly on the sidelines as Navy took over on its 10 with 1:51 to go and an opportunity for a second-straight, last-minute victory. But Tigers defensive back Austin Hall picked off Zach Abey at the Midshipmen 33 to end the threat and secure a 30-27 upset of 25th-ranked Navy.

Ferguson, Taylor rally No. 25 Memphis past Houston, 42-38

Down 17 in the second half on the road, there was no panic in No. 25 Memphis.

The Tigers kept their focus and finished with a victory.

Riley Ferguson threw for 471 yards and had a 21-yard TD pass with 1:28 left, Patrick Taylor rushed for a career-high four touchdowns and Memphis rallied to beat Houston 42-38 on Thursday night.

Flowers leads No. 16 South Florida past Tulane, 34-28

South Florida quarterback Quinton Flowers was just finishing his drop-back when blitzing Tulane linebacker Zachery Harris barreled unabated across the line of scrimmage with what looked like a clear path to a drive-stalling sack.

With a sudden step to his right, Flowers eluded the rush and then darted into the same opening through which Harris had blitzed before veering toward the left sideline for a first-down run on third and 10. The scramble exemplified Flowers' pivotal influence on the game, extending a drive that concluded with Darius Tice's 45-yard touchdown run on a draw play.

Flowers passed for two touchdowns, ran for 138 yards and another score, and No. 16 South Florida extended the nation's longest active winning streak to 12 games with a 34-28 victory over Tulane on Saturday night.

No. 20 Central Florida beats Navy 31-21 for first 6-0

Central Florida finally had been tested in a tight game, and someone wondered if coach Scott Frost enjoyed seeing how his team reacted to the situation.

"Heck no. I lost a year off my life tonight," Frost said Saturday after the Knights' 31-21 victory over Navy. "You need close games because you need to see how your kids experience those situations, but they're not fun. It was stressful."

No. 24 Memphis beats Tulane 56-26

During a four-game winning streak that has given No. 24 Memphis the lead in the American Athletic Conference West Division, the Tigers have averaged 49.5 points and 541.5 yards total offense. Still, there's something missing.

The Tigers are still seeking more from their high-powered offense that has occasionally sputtered.

They got plenty of points Friday night. Memphis overpowered Tulane 56-26 behind a balanced attack that produced 298 passing yards and 259 rushing yards. Quarterback Riley Ferguson passed for three touchdowns and rushed for two others, while running back Darrell Henderson added 112 yards and another score.

No. 18 UCF blows out Austin Peay 73-33

Austin Peay coach Will Healy was so impressed with No. 18 UCF that he said something even he knew might be over the top.

"Coach (Scott) Frost probably hates me saying this, but I don't know how that team shouldn't be in the conversation for the playoffs," Healy said UCF ran roughshod over Austin Peay in a 73-33 victory Saturday night.

King's late TD lifts Houston to 28-24 upset of No. 17 USF

It turns out Major Applewhite was right.

His Houston Cougars had everything it took to beat previously unbeaten No. 17 South Florida on Saturday.

That included a young quarterback who didn't show his inexperience while getting his first extensive playing time in college and a defense that answered the coach's challenge to play a complete game.

D'Eriq King kept his team's hopes alive with a 30-yard completion on fourth-and-24, then finished a winning drive with his second touchdown run of the day to lift the Cougars (5-3, 3-2 American Athletic Conference) over USF 28-24 before an announced crowd of 32,316.

No. 15 UCF stays undefeated with 31-24 victory over SMU

UCF's McKenzie Milton didn't complete passes with his usual efficiency, and his offense didn't put up its usual high-scoring numbers.

But the Knights earned their usual result, leaving SMU with a 31-24 victory, remaining the only undefeated team in the Group of Five and on track for a major New Year's Day bowl game if they can win out.
