Plumlee ditches mask, lifts Duke past UNCW

After Marshall Plumlee jettisoned the mask guarding his broken nose during Duke's awful opening against upstart UNC Wilmington, he entered the locker room at halftime and gave his teammates a short message: "I got you."

    Indeed he did.

Plumlee finished with a career-high 23 points to lead the defending national champion Blue Devils to a tough 93-85 victory on Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Rodriguez rescues Canes after Wichita State rally

Maybe it was the technical against Miami coach Jim Larranaga. Maybe it was Sheldon McClellan repeatedly yelling in the huddle: "We're not losing this game!"

Whatever it was, Angel Rodriguez made sure the Hurricanes would play another day.

The smallest guy on the court, Rodriguez played large on Saturday. He took over after Miami blew the 21-point lead that he pretty much had created, hitting a big 3-pointer with 72 seconds remaining and scoring 28 points to lead the third-seeded Hurricanes over Wichita State 65-57 on Saturday to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.

Late tip gives Notre Dame win over SF Austin

Notre Dame and Stephen F. Austin went shot-for-shot in an NCAA tournament game that was about as good as it gets. The power school against the unflinching underdog. The lead never was more than seven for either team.

That it came down to the last shot was no surprise. The hero, though, might have been the most unlikely player on the floor to make a game-winner.

Rex Pflueger tapped in a rebound with 1.5 seconds left and Notre Dame survived 14th-seeded Stephen F. Austin 76-75 on Sunday to reach the NCAA round of 16 for the second consecutive season.

Jackson scores career-high 27, No. 6 UNC beats Tulane, 95-75

If North Carolina needs more scoring from Justin Jackson this season, early signs are the sixth-ranked Tar Heels are going to get it.

Jackson scored a career-high 27 points, guard Joel Berry II added a career-high 23, and No. 6 North Carolina never trailed its overmatched host, defeating Tulane 95-75 on Friday night in the regular season opener for both teams.

No. 8 Virginia cruises past UNC Greensboro 76-51 in opener

Virginia coach Tony Bennett didn't know exactly what to expect in the eighth-ranked Cavaliers' season opener, between being down two forwards to losing so much from the team that made a deep NCAA Tournament push.

When it was over, he saw the Cavaliers have some balance and depth to work with, along with a defense that looked ready from the tip.

Marial Shayok scored 15 points to lead the offense in Virginia's 76-51 win against UNC Greensboro on Friday night. Meanwhile, the defense -- the bedrock of Bennett's program -- held the Spartans scoreless for more than 11 minutes spanning halftime as the game turned into a methodical rout.

No. 6 North Carolina beats Chattanooga 97-57 in home opener

    - Kenny Williams III spent last season trying to keep his confidence up while buried on the bench for a deep, veteran North Carolina team.

The first two games of his sophomore season are undoing some of that frustration.

Williams had 11 points for the sixth-ranked Tar Heels in a 97-57 victory over Chattanooga on Sunday in the home opener.
