No. 12 Louisville runs away to 91-58 win over William & Mary

    - Louisville is looking to develop some take-charge guys early this season, and several candidates are emerging.

Freshman forward V.J. King scored 17 points and Deng Adel added 16, including eight during Louisville's 10-0 run to close the first half, to help the 12th-ranked Cardinals pull away from William & Mary for a 91-58 victory Monday night.

No. 5 North Carolina rolls past Long Beach State 93-67

North Carolina keeps sharing the ball and putting up big numbers, proving the fifth-ranked Tar Heels still have plenty of offensive punch despite losing a lot of production from last year.

Hall of Fame coach Roy Williams is more focused on getting more consistency from his team on the defensive end, and maybe a little more attention to detail, too.

Joel Berry II scored 23 points and UNC shot 53 percent to beat Long Beach State 93-67 on Tuesday night for a third straight lopsided win to open the season.

Nichols scores 11; No. 8 Virginia handle St. Francis 72-32

Austin Nichols is one of several new players that figures prominently in the rotation for No. 8 Virginia, and while he arrived as a transfer from Memphis with a reputation as a gifted offensive player, he's adapted quickly to Tony Bennett's defensive philosophy.

"I think we can be a pretty good team," Nichols said after leading Virginia with 11 points in a 72-32 rout of St. Francis Brooklyn on Tuesday night. "We've just to continue focusing on defense."

No. 18 Syracuse has big 1st-half run, beats Holy Cross 90-46

    - Andrew White says it's way too early to call himself an X factor for No. 18 Syracuse. The fifth-year transfer from Nebraska may just be the difference maker, however, for a team that looks like it may be one of the nation's elite.

White, who shot 41 percent from 3-point range a year ago, signed with the Orange the day before fall classes started. He gives the Orange a dimension they appeared to be lacking entering the season.

"I definitely think he's a difference maker," said fellow fifth-year transfer John Gillon. "The way he spreads the floor and how quick his release is there's really not five people who can shoot like that in the nation."

White scored 19 points, Tyler Lydon had 17, and Syracuse went on a 14-0 run in the first half to take control and overpower Holy Cross 90-46 on Tuesday night.

No. 12 Louisville runs past Long Beach State 88-56

Louisville coach Rick Pitino's concerns about the early season schedule causing his 12th-ranked Cardinals problems might be merited at some point.

Right now, the Cardinals are handling non-conference opponents with surprising ease.

Jaylen Johnson had 14 points and 11 rebounds, Deng Adel added 11 points and Louisville jumped on Long Beach State quickly for an 88-56 blowout Thursday.

Andrew White leads Syracuse in rout over Monmouth

Syracuse's vaunted 2/3 zone was way too much for Monmouth to handle.

The Orange (3-0) limited Monmouth (1-2) to 21 second-half points and broke open a tight game en route to a 71-50 rout Friday night.

No. 5 North Carolina pulls away for 83-68 win over Hawaii

North Carolina coach Roy Williams did not mince words after his fifth-ranked Tar Heels struggled in the first half before pulling out their latest win.

Isaiah Hicks scored 10 of his 16 points after halftime to lead five players in double-figures as North Carolina (4-0) beat Hawaii 83-68 Friday night

Top-ranked Duke bounced back from its loss to Kansas by beating Penn State, but watched another player go down with an injury.

Luke Kennard scores 24 to lead No. 1 Duke past No. 21 URI

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski says he'll have a lot of good players once his team gets healthy.

He has a few right now.

Luke Kennard scored 24 points to lead top-ranked Blue Devils to the championship of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off tournament with a 75-65 win Sunday over No. 21 Rhode Island.

Guy scores 20 as No. 7 Virginia routs Grambling State 90-34

    - Freshman guard Kyle Guy made the biggest splash of his fledgling college career with 20 points in only 13 minutes Tuesday night. Yet the heralded Virginia recruit was upstaged by a trio of walk-ons who made the most of some rare extended playing time in a runaway victory.

Justice Bartley scored five points while Jeff Jones and Trevon Gross Jr. added three apiece for the seventh-ranked Cavaliers in a 90-34 blowout of Grambling State.

No. 4 North Carolina rolls over Oklahoma State in Maui

North Carolina has won the Maui Invitational three times, championships that were a springboard to two national titles and a trip to the Final Four.

Keep playing like this and the Tar Heels could be looking at a repeat performance.

Joel Berry III scored 24 points, Justin Jackson added 22 and No. 4 North Carolina steamrolled its way into the Maui Invitational championship game Tuesday night with a 107-75 victory over Oklahoma State.

No. 18 Syracuse holds SC State to 27 percent in 101-59 rout

When six of nine scholarship players score in double figures and three register double-doubles, even hard-to-please Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim can find a few reasons to smile.

Andrew White had 15 points and the No. 18 Orange (4-0) held South Carolina State to 27 percent shooting in a 101-59 victory Tuesday night.

No. 4 North Carolina beats No. 16 Wisconsin 71-56 in Maui

North Carolina won the Maui Invitational in 1999 and went on to reach the Final Four later that season. The Tar Heels won in paradise again in 2004 and 2008, which became springboards to national championships.

After their latest Maui title -- and maybe most dominating yet -- Arizona here they come?

The fourth-ranked Tar Heels capped a roughshod run through a deep Maui Invitational field by crushing No. 16 Wisconsin 71-56 in the title game Wednesday night, establishing themselves as early season favorites to reach the Final Four in Glendale next April.

No. 10 Louisville beats Old Dominion 68-62 in OT

    - Louisville coach Rick Pitino wasn't happy with all the bad shots his 10th-ranked Cardinals hoisted up early against Old Dominion -- especially with ones by sophomore Donovan Mitchell.

"In the first half he was trying to win a game of H-O-R-S-E, see the most difficult shot he could take so he could win the game," Pitino quipped.

Mitchell went on to score all 15 of his points after halftime to help the Cardinals hold off Old Dominion 68-62 in overtime in the final game of the first day at the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Thornwell leads South Carolina over No. 25 Michigan

Michigan coach John Beilein turned to his staff on the bench with a puzzled look.

"Have we scored a basket this half?" he asked.

No, Coach, not against South Carolina's solid defense.

Sindarius Thornwell had 21 points and 10 rebounds and the Gamecocks held No. 25 Michigan to its lowest shooting performance in six years in a 61-46 victory Wednesday night.

Louisville added a late-night wrinkle to its defense, ran out to a big lead and hung on to earn a trip to the Battle 4 Atlantis championship game.

Donovan Mitchell made two 3-pointers in the final 4 1/2 minutes and scored 14 points to help No. 10 Louisville beat Wichita State 62-52 on Thursday.

No. 7 Virginia beats Iowa 74-41

    - Stifling defense, as usual, carried the day again for No. 7 Virginia as the Cavaliers cruised to their fifth straight win.

Jerred Reuter led a well-balanced scoring attack with 14 points, but it was that trademark defense that set the tone for a 74-41 victory over Iowa on Friday night in the semifinals of the Emerald Coast Classic.
