Bacon scores 15, leads No. 25 Florida State over Illinois

    Leonard Hamilton has a problem.

He has 10 players who can play.

It's a complication that other coaches only wish they could have.

"That's who we are," Hamilton said following No. 25 Florida State's 72-61 win over Illinois in the consolation game of the NIT Season Tip-Off on Friday.

No. 7 Virginias beat Providence for Emerald Coast title

Providence got physical with No, 7 Virginia and scored 52 points, the most anyone has had this season against the nation's top-ranked defense. It wasn't enough.

Virginia beat the Friars 63-52 to win the Emerald Coast Classic on Saturday night.

Perrantes leads No. 7 Virginia past Ohio State, 63-61

London Perrantes knew he wasn't playing well, and if he had any doubt whatsoever, coach Tony Bennett let him know.

"I got after him," Bennett said Wednesday night after Perrantes scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half and No. 7 Virginia overcame a sloppy performance and rallied past Ohio State 63-61 on Wednesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. "I did, and he responded.

No. 14 Louisville outlasts No. 15 Purdue 71-64

Baskets fell when Louisville needed them, but coach Rick Pitino was more pleased by the defense that created those timely opportunities against Purdue's fierce rally.

Nearly every Cardinal had a hand in the effort, literally and figuratively, to gut out a tough win.

Ray Spalding and Mangok Mathiang each scored 11 points and Donovan Mitchellhad critical points and rebounds down the stretch to help No. 14 Louisville hold off No. 15 Purdue 71-64 on Wednesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

No. 14 Louisville pulls out 79-70 win over Grand Canyon

Louisville coach Rick Pitino has played in the most difficult arenas in college basketball. Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, North Carolina.

He's faced some of the game's best guards through the years. Bobby Hurley, John Wall, Sherman Douglass.

Never before had he seen a combination like DeWayne Russell and the rowdy Grand Canyon Havocs.

Overcoming a dominating performance by Russell and Grand Canyon's boisterous student section, No. 14 Louisville escaped with a harder-than-expected, 79-70 win over the Antelopes Saturday night.

Andrew White leads No. 22 Syracuse over North Florida

A win is a win is a win. But when a 24-point, second-half lead shrinks to five, and you're outrebounded by eight, a victory doesn't feel quite as satisfying, especially at home.

But survive is what Syracuse did Saturday.

Andrew White scored a season-high 26 points and Frank Howard had 10 points, a career-high 13 assists and just two turnovers to lead No. 22 Syracuse to a 77-71 victory over North Florida on Saturday.

Williams helps No. 3 North Carolina beats Radford 95-50

Kenny Williams III finally had the shooting flurry that third-ranked North Carolina has been waiting to see.

The sophomore had 14 of his career-high 19 points in the opening five minutes, helping the Tar Heels build a huge early lead and beat Radford 95-50 on Sunday.

No. 14 Virginia bounces back, beats East Carolina 76-53

East Carolina coach Jeff Lebo came to John Paul Jones Arena thinking his team could be running into a buzz saw.

    He was right.

Kyle Guy scored 13 points to lead a season-high five Virginia players in double figures, and the No. 14 Cavaliers used strong perimeter shooting to beat the Pirates 76-53 on Tuesday night.

No. 5 Duke beats No. 21 Florida 84-74 in Jimmy V Classic

Almost everybody in Madison Square Garden was impressed with the game Amile Jefferson had for No. 5 Duke.

Nobody appreciated it more than Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Jefferson set career highs with 24 points and 15 rebounds to lead Duke to an 84-74 victory over No. 21 Florida on Tuesday night in the Jimmy V Classic.

Colson, Vasturia lead No. 23 Notre Dame over IPFW 87-72

Even as Fort Wayne made a run Tuesday night, No. 23 Notre Dame stayed calm.

The Fighting Irish saw a 27-point lead in the second half whittled down to nine with under 3 minutes left, but they hit their free throws down the stretch to close out an 87-72 win over the Mastodons.

No. 7 North Carolina holds off Davidson 83-74

Justin Jackson buried shot after shot from behind the arc in the best performance of his career for No. 7 North Carolina. Coach Roy Williams didn't have much to feel good about otherwise.

Jackson matched his career high with 27 points and hit a career-best seven 3-pointers to help the Tar Heels beat Davidson 83-74 on Wednesday night, though they struggled both to slow down high-scoring Wildcats guard Jack Gibbs and find much of a rhythm with top point guard Joel Berry II sidelined by a sprained left ankle.

No. 5 Duke routs UNLV 94-45

Not one player in Duke's basketball program was born when the 1991 Blue Devils pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Final Four history.

So, Thursday, on a five-hour flight to Las Vegas, coach Mike Krzyzewski made his players watch footage from 25 years ago, when Duke beat UNLV 79-77 an epic upset in the national semifinals. It was revenge for the year prior, when UNLV throttled Duke 103-73 in the national championship.

No. 11 Louisville runs away from Texas Southern 102-71

Rick Pitino graciously acknowledged the latest milestone in his Hall of Fame career with the hope his Louisville Cardinals grow from the tougher-than-expected win that required overcoming some deficiencies.

Quentin Snider scored 15 points, V.J. King added 13 and No. 11 Louisville overcame a cold shooting start to beat Texas Southern 102-71 on Saturday and give Pitino his 400th victory as the Cardinals' coach.

No. 7 North Carolina edges Tennessee 73-71

Nate Britt hasn't been able to make up for the offense and shooting touch lost with North Carolina's starting point guard sidelined by an ankle injury.

Still, the senior was good enough in the final minutes of a tight game to help the No. 7 Tar Heels complete a big comeback -- with some help from a couple of freshmen.

Rookie big man Tony Bradley Jr. blocked a shot in the final seconds to help the Tar Heels rally from 15 down to beat Tennessee 73-71 on Sunday, a performance that Hall of Fame coach Roy Williams described as "a struggle."

No. 11 Louisville cruises past Eastern Kentucky 87-56

Week-long breaks for final exams initially created different results between No. 11 Louisville and visiting Eastern Kentucky, which seemed much sharper from the layoff.

The Cardinals shed their early rust to post the all-around effort they will need for a daunting quartet of ranked teams including an archrival.

Donovan Mitchell scored 15 points, Quentin Snider added 13 and Louisville used a 20-0 run to close the first half and dominate Eastern Kentucky 87-56 on Saturday for its fifth straight victory.

Hall leads No. 13 Virginia past Robert Morris, 79-39

Devon Hall's offense is coming around after a slow start to the season, and on a Virginia team that lacks a go-to scorer, it's an important development as the 13th-ranked Cavaliers head into the more challenging part of their schedule.

Hall matched his career high with 13 points and the Cavaliers returned from a 10-day layoff for final exams with a 79-39 victory over Robert Morris on Saturday.

Bacon leads No. 23 Florida State past Manhattan 83-67

The Florida State Seminoles had a hunch even before they took the court Saturday they might be tested by Manhattan, and they were correct.

"Our locker room is right next to theirs, so we heard them before the game just yelling," Seminoles guard Dwayne Bacon said. "We recognized they definitely had a lot more energy than we did in the first half."

Bacon scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half to help No. 23 Florida State pull away for its seventh consecutive victory, beating Manhattan 83-67 in the opening game at the Orange Bowl Classic.
