No. 6 Notre Dame beats Chaminade 83-56 in Maui

Matt Farrell led a big first-half surge, Bonzie Colson played his usual always-under-control game and Notre Dame handled a lower-tier school the way it was supposed to.

Now it's on to the Maui Invitational semifinals, where the competition figures to get a whole lot stiffer.

Farrell scored 27 points and Colson added 23, helping the No. 13 Irish open the Maui Invitational with an 83-56 rout over Division II Chaminade on Monday night.

No. 13 Notre Dame rallies to beat No. 6 Wichita State 67-66

The list of champions at the Maui Invitational includes some of the best programs in college basketball. Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Arizona.

Notre Dame coach Mike Brey believed his team belonged up there, too.

Now they are after a gritty comeback against one of the nation's top teams.

Martinas Geben hit two free throws with 2.3 seconds left and No. 13 Notre Dame rallied from a 16-point deficit to beat No. 6 Wichita State 67-66 in the Maui Invitational championship game on Wednesday night.

N.C. State stuns No. 2 Arizona 90-84 in Battle 4 Atlantis

From the day he was hired, new North Carolina State coach Kevin Keatts promised his team would play an aggressive style that didn't back down from competing with anyone.

The Wolfpack needed all of five games to prove him right in a huge upset.

Freshman Braxton Beverly scored a season-high 20 points and sparked the decisive late run that helped N.C. State stun No. 2 Arizona 90-84 in Wednesday's first round at the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Walker struggles in return home, No. 11 Miami beats La Salle

A line of fans wearing Reading High School state championship sweatshirts had formed more than 90 minutes before tipoff. They were eagerly awaiting a chance to get inside and see the local kid who has brought so much pride to this struggling town.

That Lonnie Walker IV didn't shoot well didn't damper the enthusiasm on a night that was bigger than basketball.

The prized freshman struggled in his return home, but Dewan Huellscored 16 points and No. 11 Miami did just enough to get by La Salle 57-46 on Wednesday night and remain unbeaten.

No. 19 Louisville survives Saint Francis, 84-72

Looking out of sorts following Ray Spalding's exit with an ankle injury, No. 19 Louisville needed help to finish what the junior forward started against Saint Francis as a scorer and rebounder.

Deng Adel and Jordan Nwora stepped up to fill the scoring void with timely shots, and the Cardinals made timely defensive stops to survive.

Spalding had 19 points and a career-high 13 rebounds before leaving midway through the second half with an ankle injury, and Adel and Nwora each made key 3-pointers late as Louisville held off Saint Francis 84-72 on Friday night.

Luke Maye carries No. 9 North Carolina past Arkansas 87-68

Roy Williams was able to find the one flaw in Luke Maye's otherwise nearly spotless performance.

    Oh, those turnovers.

"The young man is really, really intelligent and he's finally starting to play basketball with his brain involved too," the North Carolina coach said. "Except for his turnovers."

Maye, who committed five turnovers, had career-highs with 28 points and 16 rebounds, Kenny Williams had 16 of his 19 points in the second half, and No. 9 North Carolina slowed down high-scoring Arkansas beating the Razorbacks 87-68 on Friday in the semifinals of the PK80 Invitational.

Brown leads No. 11 Miami past North Florida 86-65

In his first four games of the season, Miami's Bruce Brown didn't play like the freshman guard who caught the attention of NBA scouts.

Brown struggled from the field, averaging eight points per game -- fourth-best on the 11th-ranked Hurricanes.

On Saturday, Brown showed flashes of his first-year performances as he scored 14 points to lead Miami to an 86-65 victory over North Florida.

No. 4 Michigan State thumps No. 9 North Carolina 63-45

Tom Izzo finally got the better of Roy Williams with a record performance Michigan State would like to replicate -- and North Carolina would rather soon forget.

    Sometimes playing ugly still matters.

"What I think this does is reassure our guys," Izzo said. "The way basketball is right now, it's all the pretty boys stuff but at the end of the day most of the good teams are still winning by doing the dirty work."

Joshua Langford made five 3-pointers and scored 23 points and No. 4 Michigan State used a record-setting defensive performance to topple No. 9 North Carolina 63-45 on Sunday night to win the "Victory Bracket" of the PK80 Invitational.

Top-ranked Duke rallies for 87-84 victory over No. 7 Florida

Marvin Bagley III had a simple explanation for No. 1 Duke's incredible late rally against No. 7 Florida.

"We just have heart," the 6-foot-11 freshman sensation said. "That's pretty much all it is."

Bagley had 30 points and 15 rebounds, and the Blue Devils came back from a 17-point deficit with 10 minutes left to beat the Gators 87-84 on Sunday night for the Motion Bracket championship at the Phil Knight Invitational tournament.

David Robinson thinks Marvin Bagley III like Tim Duncan

David Robinson has seen Duke's Marvin Bagley III play as much as anyone. And while he isn't into comparisons, Bagley's composure reminds the Admiral of former San Antonio Spurs teammate Tim Duncan.

"He reminds me a little bit of Tim Duncan in being so mature with the ball," Robinson said after Duke's win over Florida in the PK80 title game. "He's got the same composure as a young Tim. I saw Tim in college at Wake, and he was phenomenal in terms of being patient. He never got rattled, and that's Bagley. He's the same way. Fantastic kid."

No. 13 UNC beats Michigan 86-71 in Big Ten/ACC Challenge

North Carolina coach Roy Williams spent a sleepless night stewing over an ugly weekend loss, then showed his players the film of what happens when they don't play with the toughness or intensity needed to joust with a top-tier opponent.

It's too early to say if his 13th-ranked Tar Heels learned from it just yet, though they at least refound their shooting touch against Michigan.

Luke Maye scored 27 points to help UNC beat the Wolverines 86-71 on Wednesday night in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, earning a solid offensive showing days after a miserable output against Michigan State.

Huell, 10th-ranked Hurricanes top No. 12 Minnesota 86-81

The Miami Hurricanes passed their first test of the season by taking the Minnesota big men out of their element around the basket.

Dewan Huell had to work hard for his 15 second-half points, but all those screens he came up to set paid off down the stretch.

Huell scored 23 points in 27 minutes and Bruce Brown Jr. added 16 points and nine rebounds to help No. 10 Miami beat No. 12 Minnesota 86-81 on Wednesday night as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

No. 1 Duke uses late run to pull away from Indiana 91-81

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski saw how tired his team was Wednesday night.

    He heard it, too.

Fortunately for the Blue Devils, Marvin Bagley III and Grayson Allenstill had enough energy to persevere.

Bagley scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Allen had 21 points and No. 1 Duke used a late scoring run to fend off pesky Indiana 91-81 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Rick Pitino sues Louisville Athletic Association for $37.6 million, claiming breach of contract

Former coach Rick Pitino has sued the University of Louisville Athletic Association for $37.6 million, saying it breached his contract by placing him on unpaid administrative leave without notice and then firing him last month with no legally justified cause.

Pitino was fired in October in the wake of an FBI investigation of bribery and fraud in college basketball related to the steering of recruits to Adidas, sports agents and financial advisers. Pitino maintains he wasn't aware of an alleged payment from a Cardinals assistant to the family of Brian Bowen during the recruiting process.

Louisville has since announced that Bowen, a freshman, won't play for the school but can transfer if he wishes.

University spokesman John Karman told the Courier-Journal that Louisville is aware of the Pitino lawsuit.

Berry, Maye carry No. 13 UNC past pesky Davidson 85-75

Davidson coach Bob McKillop insists nobody recruited Luke Maye harder than he did.

In the end, Maye passed up a chance to play for his hometown school and landed at North Carolina, where he is quickly developing into one of the nation's top players.

Joel Berry II had 27 points, Maye had 24 points and a career-high 17 rebounds and No. 13 North Carolina defeated Davidson 85-75 on Friday night.

No. 1 Duke beats South Dakota 96-80 to improve to 10-0

Duke dominated the first half to build a big lead, only to see South Dakota answer with a 50-point second half in the top-ranked Blue Devils' famously hostile Cameron Indoor Stadium.

And for the most part, Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski was good with that.

Grayson Allen scored 15 of his 25 points in an 8-minute opening blitz to help Duke beat South Dakota 96-80 on Saturday in its first home game in nearly two travel-filled weeks.

No. 10 Miami stays unbeaten, tops Princeton 80-52

The first thing that Miami coach Jim Larranaga noticed on the postgame stat sheet was 3-point shooting, and even he was a little surprised by the numbers.

Safe to say, he was pleased.

DJ Vasiljevic scored 20 points, Bruce Brown Jr. added 17 and No. 10 Miami had little trouble on the way to topping Princeton 80-52 in the HoopHall Miami Invitational on Saturday night.
