P.J. Hairston won't play in opener

North Carolina junior P.J. Hairston and senior Leslie McDonald will not play in Friday's season opener against Oakland due to the "ongoing compliance issue" that began this summer.

Coach Roy Williams said he did not know a timetable for when the matter will be settled, adding that he's "waiting for someone else to tell me what's going on." Both players are presumably being investigated for possibly receiving impermissible benefits.

Jabari Parker scores 22 in debut as Duke cruises

Before they even took a dribble for Duke, Jabari Parker and Rodney Hood were anointed the focal points of the Blue Devils' offense.

After their debut together, it was easy to see why.

Parker and Hood each scored 22 points in their first game for No. 4 Duke, a 111-77 rout of Davidson on Friday night.

No. 8 Syracuse rallies from 14 down to defeat Cornell

When Trevor Cooney arrived at Syracuse, he was billed as a shooter. That he is.

Finding open space all around the court and catching his teammates' eyes, Cooney made seven 3-pointers and scored 27 points, both career highs, to lead No. 8 Syracuse past pesky Cornell 82-60 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Grant leads No. 21 Irish over Miami (Ohio) 74-62

It wasn't your typical pre-conference schedule blowout, and Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said he was happy about that.

No. 21 Notre Dame, powered by a career-high 26 points from Jerian Grant, beat Miami of Ohio 74-62 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Gill and No. 24 Virginia beat James Madison 61-41

As No. 24 Virginia entered the season with the program's highest expectations in coach Tony Bennett's tenure, no one was as eager to get started Friday night as a pair of redshirt sophomores who sat on the sidelines a year ago waiting their turn.

Point guard Malcolm Brogdon, who missed last season following foot surgery, and forward Anthony Gill, making his Cavaliers debut after transferring from South Carolina, didn't hesitate in their return to the court while fueling a 61-41 win over James Madison.

    Cam Biedscheid plans to redshirt

Notre Dame sophomore Cam Biedscheid will sit out the 2013-14 season to preserve a year of eligibility.

Notre Dame coach Mike Brey confirmed the decision after the 21st-ranked Fighting Irish's 74-62, season-opening victory over Miami of Ohio on Friday night.

No. 21 Notre Dame wins second game in three days

Garrick Sherman's first game this season was one to forget.

He fouled out and scored just three points in No. 21 Notre Dame's season-opening win on Friday. Fortunately for the fifth-year senior, he only had to wait two days to erase the memory of that performance.

Sherman had 15 points and nine rebounds Sunday, and Jerian Grant also scored 15 points to lead the Fighting Irish to an 80-49 victory over Stetson.

C.J. Fair, Jerami Grant lead No. 9 Syracuse past Fordham

Two games into the season, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim knows one thing: his Orange are a real work in progress.

C.J. Fair scored a career-high 26 points, Jerami Grant added 16 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 9 Syracuse beat Fordham 89-74 on Tuesday night after again playing two entirely different halves.

Va. Tech AD Weaver to retire

Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver plans to step down next month for health reasons after 16 years running the Hokies' athletic program.

"I have had the pleasure of serving a great university and working with outstanding staff and coaches. I am very proud of our many accomplishments. We compete and win," Weaver said in a statement. "We have some of the nation's best fans and, most importantly, our students graduate with a first class education. However, leadership of this important university role requires active engagement. I am not able to do that at this time. The department is in good shape, but I am not."

Roy Williams: 'It's what it is'

P.J. Hairston, North Carolina's leading scorer last season, and senior Leslie McDonald will miss their second straight game because of NCAA eligibility concerns when the No. 12 Tar Heels play Holy Cross on Friday night.

Team spokesman Steve Kirschner said Thursday the school and NCAA "are still working together" in an ongoing process. He said there is no timetable for a decision.

Rodney Hood scores 28 as No. 4 Duke wins in rout

Rodney Hood had the best game of his career. Jabari Parker did something that no Duke player had ever done for Coach K.

Hood scored a career-high 28 points, Parker added 21 and the fourth-ranked Blue Devils routed Florida Atlantic 97-64 on Friday night.

No. 12 UNC pulls away from Holy Cross in second half

Two games into the season, Marcus Paige looks comfortable hunting his shot for No. 12 North Carolina.

Paige scored a career-high 23 points to help the Tar Heels push their way past Holy Cross 62-54 on Friday night in the Hall of Fame Tipoff event, the sophomore's second strong scoring performance.

C.J. Fair's 20 points lead No. 9 Syracuse to win against Colgate

Ninth-ranked Syracuse beat Colgate for the 48th straight time in the series between upstate New York schools, and Orange coach Jim Boeheim seemed OK with another so-so performance by his young team.

C.J. Fair scored 20 points and freshman guard Tyler Ennis hit four 3-pointers as the Orange won 69-50 on Saturday.

Mike Tobey, No. 25 Virginia pull away from Davidson

One minute into the second half, Virginia coach Tony Bennett called a timeout and lit into his team.

The 25th-ranked Cavaliers then put together a nice surge and went on to defeat winless Davidson 70-57 on Saturday.

Jabari Parker, Rodney Hood help No. 6 Duke rout UNC Asheville

Jabari Parker doesn't want anyone to think he's a ball hog. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski still wants him to keep shooting.

Parker had 21 points and 10 rebounds in his fourth straight 20-point game, leading the sixth-ranked Blue Devils past UNC Asheville 91-55 on Monday night in the opening round of the NIT Season Tip-Off.

No. 9 Syracuse escapes St. Francis in final minute

Jerami Grant had tied the score with a putback with just over a minute left and was looking to make another impact play.

He did seconds later with a backbreaking steal, fed a streaking Michael Gbinije for the go-ahead layup, and No. 9 Syracuse escaped with a 56-50 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn on Monday night.

Rodney Hood has career game as Duke pulls away vs. E. Carolina

Rodney Hood connected from all over the court while freshman Jabari Parker was busy swatting shots and scoring in transition.

And sixth-ranked Duke needed every bit of that production to hold off East Carolina.

Hood scored a career-high 30 points Tuesday night to help the Blue Devils beat the Pirates 83-74 in the NIT Season Tip-Off.
