Kabengele scores 18 points as Florida State routs Canisius

Mfiondu Kabengele knew he was ready to make the jump from reserve to a major contributor this season.

The 6-foot-10 sophomore had a career night Monday, even doing it while coming off the bench.

Kabengele scored a career-high 18 points in 19 minutes as No. 14 Florida State warmed up after a seven-day layoff to put away Canisius 93-61 on Monday night. The nephew of former NBA All-Star center Dikembe Mutombo, Kabengele shot 6 of 12 from the floor and added six rebounds.

No. 1 Duke outlasts No. 8 Auburn 78-72 in Maui

Duke hit Auburn with a flurry of alley-oops, acrobatic drives and step-back 3-pointers.

The Tigers, unlike the Blue Devils' first four opponents, fought back, going right back at the top-ranked Blue Devils.

    It still wasn't enough.

Duke withstood its toughest test of the season so far, outlasting No. 8 Auburn 78-72 Tuesday night to reach the Maui Invitational title game.

No. 4 Virginia reaches Battle 4 Atlantis final

De'Andre Hunter is rapidly developing into a game-changing presence in fourth-ranked Virginia's lineup.

The 6-foot-7 redshirt sophomore matched his career high with 23 points and hit a critical late 3-pointer to help the Cavaliers hold off Dayton 66-59 in Thursday's Battle 4 Atlantis semifinals. It was his second big outing in two days in the Bahamas, a sign that last season's Atlantic Coast Conference sixth man of the year is poised to thrive in a leading role.

White helps No. 7 UNC beat No. 17 UCLA in Las Vegas

North Carolina trailed for most of its game against UCLA, but with a potentially disastrous trip to Las Vegas looming, the seventh-ranked Tar Heels kept being aggressive offensively -- and it paid off.

Coby White had 19 points and eight assists, Luke Maye added 16 points and eight rebounds and North Carolina beat No. 17 UCLA 94-78 in the consolation game of the Las Vegas Invitational on Friday.

No. 4 Virginia tops No. 25 Wisconsin in Atlantis

Fourth-ranked Virginia got another test like coach Tony Bennett wanted, and fittingly it came from a team with a style that looked awfully familiar.

Perhaps that's why the Cavaliers handled everything that came their way -- from fighting through their off-target shooting to tussling with a preseason All-American -- well enough to win the Battle 4 Atlantis championship.

Virginia beat No. 25 Wisconsin 53-46 on Friday to claim the tournament title in a game that featured tough defense and plenty of clock-melting stretches that reduced the number of possessions, leading to a grind-it-out fight to the final horn.

No. 14 Florida State beats No. 19 LSU in OT

Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton flashed a big smile when talking about a game-winning 3-pointer by 6-foot-10 forward Mfiondu Kabengele.

Kabengele hit the deep jumper with a half-second left in overtime, and No. 14 Florida State advanced to the AdvoCare Invitational championship game with a 79-76 win over No. 19 LSU on Friday.

Hill leads No. 13 Hokies in rout of St. Francis

Ahmed Hill and No. 13 Virginia Tech knew their strong finish to the first half wasn't going to be enough to satisfy coach Buzz Williams.

The Hokies got the message at halftime and quickly pulled away from the Red Flash for a 75-37 victory on Saturday.

Louisville upsets No. 9 Michigan State 82-78 in overtime

No matter what line he shot from behind against No. 9 Michigan State, Louisville junior guard Ryan McMahon was feeling it.

The Cardinals fed off his energy to not only give first-year coach Chris Mack a significant win, but a gutsy one at that.

McMahon made two free throws with 7.1 seconds remaining in overtime before Jordan Nwora made another from the line with 3.1 seconds left to seal it as Louisville upset the Spartans 82-78 on Tuesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Williamson, Barrett lead No. 3 Duke past Indiana 90-69

Zion Williamson jumped a lazy pass by Indiana near midcourt. All of a sudden, nothing stood between him and yet another must-see dunk.

No. 3 Duke put its lone loss firmly in the past just as easily as Williamson left those Hoosiers in his wake.

Williamson scored 25 points, RJ Barrett added 22 and Duke routed Indiana 90-69 on Tuesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Guy scores 18 as No. 4 Virginia beats No. 24 Maryland 76-71

Virginia had blown most of a 17-point lead and appeared in trouble as the sellout crowd at Maryland implored the home team to complete the comeback.

The Cavaliers had been in this situation before, and they knew exactly how to handle it.

Showing the kind of poise befitting the fourth-ranked team in the country, the Cavaliers took good care of the basketball and exhibited cool at the foul line in slipping past the No. 24 Terrapins 76-71 Wednesday night.

Forrest defense, late bucket lifts Florida St past Purdue

Trent Forrest didn't have a point, rebound or assist in the second half. Not until the game was on the line and he made all the plays Florida State needed.

Forrest forced a turnover with 16 seconds left and, after a timeout, drove the lane to hit a pull-up jumper with 5.2 seconds remaining as the No. 15 Seminoles stormed back to beat No. 19 Purdue 73-72 on Wednesday night.

RJ Barrett leads No. 3 Duke to 113-49 rout of Stetson

RJ Barrett didn't know how close he was to a triple-double. The Duke freshman was having too much fun to check the box score.

Barrett had 26 points, seven rebounds and a season-high seven assists, and the third-ranked Blue Devils routed Stetson 113-49 on Saturday night.

Ahmed Hill, Hokies bury Central Connecticut State 94-40

Most players search for motivation when playing opponents they should beat, but Ahmed Hill didn't need to look very far for his.

Actually, he only needed to watch film of his last game.

Coming off a scoreless performance against Penn State, Hill scored 24 points to lead No. 13 Virginia Tech to a 94-40 win over Central Connecticut State on Saturday.

Guy, Hunter lead No. 4 Virginia past Morgan State, 83-45

Kyle Guy had the answer ready almost before the question was finished.

How hard is it, he was asked, to maintain intensity in the second half of a game when your team leads by 30 points?

"It's very easy," he said with a steely look on his face, "considering how last season ended."

    Ah, that.

It was only last March when Virginia, the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, became the first No. 1 seed to lose to a No. 16. That 74-54 loss to UMBC wasn't even as close as the score suggests, and the sting clearly still lingers.

Savoy scores 16 as No. 11 Florida State beats Troy 83-67

Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton keeps saying his team is a work in progress. Part of the equation now is learning to handle high expectations.

P.J. Savoy scored 16 points, knocking down four 3-pointers, and No. 11 Florida State shook off a sluggish performance to put away Troy 83-67 on Monday night.
