Davis, Brooks help No. 14 UNC top UNLV 78-51 in Maui tourney

North Carolina head coach Roy Williams bumps-fists and talks with UNLV
head coach T.J. Otzelberger after an NCAA college basketball game in the Maui Invitational tournament, Monday, Nov. 30, 2020, in Asheville, N.C

North Carolina started its first game of the relocated Maui Invitational so badly that it faced an immediate double-digit hole as its Hall of Fame coach benched multiple starters.

The 14th-ranked Tar Heels offered up a confidence-building response to those early troubles.

Freshman RJ Davis scored 16 points to help UNC beat UNLV 78-51 in Monday night’s first round. After falling behind 13-0, the Tar Heels used a big run spanning halftime and a dominating effort on the glass to advance.

Black Helps No. 14 UNC Top Stanford 67-63 In Maui Semifinals

North Carolina guard R.J. Davis (4) leaps to the basket past Stanford forward
Oscar da Silva (13) and guard Bryce Wills (2) during the second half of an
NCAA college basketball game in the semifinals of the Maui Invitational,
    Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2020, in Asheville, N.C.

Leaky Black and North Carolina spent last season struggling in late-game situations, fumbling away leads and failing to make a needed play at the most critical of moments.

Maybe the 14th-ranked Tar Heels have learned from that.

Black had a big driving basket at the 1:02 mark followed by a clinching free throw with 5.5 seconds left Tuesday to help UNC hold off Stanford 67-63, sending the Tar Heels to the championship game of the relocated Maui Invitational.

Hauser Lifts No. 15 Virginia Past Kent State In OT, 71-64

Sam Hauser and No. 15 Virginia thought they had the game won in regulation, but after Kent State missed three 3-point attempts and kept rebounding the ball, Danny Pippen swished a 3 at the buzzer, forcing overtime.

In the extra period, it was Hauser who did the damage, scoring six of his 18 points as the Cavaliers avoided a second upset by an unranked, nonconference foe, beating the Golden Flashes 71-64 on Friday night.

No. 20 FSU Tops Florida 83-71 After Johnson Collapses Early

Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton told assistants and administrators that Florida could decide whether to continue after standout forward Keyontae Johnson collapsed and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Coach Mike White let his players make the call — not once, but twice. With tears in their eyes and their teammate's condition uncertain, the Gators wanted to play.

They were obviously and understandably distracted the rest of the way.

Highly touted freshman Scottie Barnes scored 17 points and No. 20 Florida State extended its dominance against the Gators with an 83-71 victory Saturday that came after Florida suddenly lost its best player.

No. 21 Duke wins 75-65 at Notre Dame in ACC opener

Playing on the road for the first time in their collegiate careers did not rattle Duke’s talented freshmen. They were looking forward to it.

“It was great, just getting to see different scenery, getting to see some snow out here,” DJ Steward said after scoring 16 points and grabbing a team-high seven rebounds to help the 21st-ranked Blue Devils beat Notre Dame 75-65 Wednesday night.
