Johnson ends slump, Pitt tops No. 16 Virginia Tech 83-72

Xavier Johnson has been a starter for 79 of the 81 games he's played for Pittsburgh, but if he has more games like his effort Wednesday night against No. 16 Virginia Tech, he might take a liking to coming off the bench.

Removed from the starting lineup for the first time all season, Johnson scored 32 points to lead the Panthers past the Hokies 83-72.

Kessler, Tar Heels rally from 16 down to upset No. 11 FSU

It took Walker Kessler one afternoon to go from promising reserve to having North Carolina fans — the first allowed to attend games all year — chanting his name.

He earned it, too, after sparking a turnaround that helped the Tar Heels upset the Atlantic Coast Conference's top team, boost their NCAA Tournament resume and give their Hall of Fame coach a milestone victory.

The 7-foot-1 freshman scored a season-high 20 points to help North Carolina beat No. 11 Florida State 78-70 on Saturday, a game that saw the Tar Heels rally from 16 down on the way to giving Roy Williams his 900th career win.

Hauser helps No. 21 Virginia end skid, beat Miami 62-51

Sam Hauser never got to experience playing in front of a packed John Paul Jones Arena because of attendance limitations caused by the pandemic, but the senior transfer made sure he and Virginia would have something to celebrate after his final home game.

Hauser scored 18 points and the 21st-ranked Cavaliers ended a three-game skid by handing Miami its sixth loss in a row, 62-51 on Monday night.

M.J. Walker leads Florida St.'s senior night rout of BC

Florida State's seniors departed from their home court one final time with a resounding victory — and one game away from an Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title.

Senior guard M.J. Walker scored 18 points, hitting six 3-pointers, and junior forward RaiQuan Gray added 16 points to help No. 11 Florida State win its 25th straight ACC home game, 93-64, over Boston College on Wednesday night.

Boeheim Pours In 30, No. 11 Seed Orange Rout Aztecs 78-62

Syracuse forward Quincy Guerrier (1) fights for a rebound with San Diego State guard Jordan Schakel (20) during the first half of a college basketball game in the first round of the NCAA tournament at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Friday, March 19, 2021

The decades-old zone defense of Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim claimed another frustrated victim Friday night.

One of the best 3-point shooting teams in the country, too.

The No. 11 seed Orange held sixth-seeded San Diego State without a field goal for nearly a quarter of the game, sweet-shooting Buddy Boeheim hit seven 3-pointers and finished with 30 points, and Syracuse cruised to a 78-62 victory inside Hinkle Fieldhouse and into the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Florida State cold from deep, outlasts UNCG in NCAA tourney

Florida State's Balsa Koprivica (5) puts back a rebound basket during the second half of a first-round game against UNC-Greensboro in the NCAA men's college basketball tournament at Banker's Life Fieldhouse, Saturday, March 20, 2021, in Indianapolis. Florida State defeated UNC-Greensboro 64-54

RaiQuan Gray scored 17 points and No. 4 seed Florida State began what it hopes will be another deep NCAA Tournament run under coach Leonard Hamilton, holding off 13th-seeded UNC Greensboro 64-54 in the East Region on Saturday.

Virginia loses 62-58 to Preston, Ohio, ending title defense

Ohio guard Lunden McDay (15) shoots an off-balanced shot and scores during the first half of a first-round game against Virginia in the NCAA men's college basketball tournament, Saturday, March 20, 2021, at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind.

Virginia spent two years on top of the college basketball world. After one night in Indiana, it was all over for the Cavaliers.

Coming out of quarantine after a positive COVID-19 test, Virginia’s unusual title defense was stopped by another upset loss in the NCAA Tournament, falling 62-58 to Jason Preston and Ohio on Saturday.

Buddy Boeheim gets dad back to Sweet 16 as Syracuse tops WVU

Buddy Boeheim kept shooting, carrying his Hall of Fame father and 11th-seeded Syracuse back into the Sweet 16.

The Orange, a top program for four decades under Jim Boeheim, once again showed they're just as dangerous as an NCAA Tournament afterthought.

"To win two games and be doubted in both, the underdog, this means everything," Buddy Boeheim said. "If you were to ask me a month or two months ago where I think we would be, I don't think I would say Sweet 16, that's for sure."

"Buckets" Boeheim scored 22 of his 25 points after halftime to lead the Orange past third-seeded West Virginia 75-72 on Sunday. Syracuse (18-9) advanced to face second-seeded Houston in a Midwest Regional semifinal.

Dereck Lively, No. 2 men's basketball prospect in 2022 class, commits to Duke Blue Devils

Elite center Dereck Lively, the top uncommitted player in the 2022 class, announced his commitment to Duke on Monday -- giving the Blue Devils the edge for the No. 1 recruiting class.

Lively chose Duke over Kentucky, although Penn State -- where his mother, Kathy Drysdale, was a 1,000-point scorer -- and Michigan also remained involved until the final weeks. The Blue Devils and Wildcats went back-and-forth for Lively over the last few months since he visited both schools in June.

No. 19 UNC rolls past Loyola in Davis' coaching debut

Hubert Davis said he wanted to put his full attention on his team during a changing of the guard for North Carolina basketball.

He mostly liked what he saw from the Tar Heels in his coaching debut.

Caleb Love scored 22 points and No. 19 North Carolina led the whole way, beating Loyola of Maryland 83-67 on Tuesday night.

Moore, Banchero help No. 9 Duke top Army 82-56 in home debut

Wendell Moore Jr. looked comfortable and confident as a veteran captain in Duke's home opener. It certainly helped having the ninth-ranked Blue Devils' famously rowdy fans packed in again for the first time in more than 20 months.

The junior forward posted only the third triple-double of the Mike Krzyzewski era to help Duke beat Army 82-56 in Friday night's home opener.
