Bacot rallies No. 18 North Carolina past Charleston 94-83

First-year coach Hubert Davis thinks his North Carolina program took a huge step forward at Charleston. Not that he hadn't cursed his decision to play the resourceful Cougars along the way.

Armando Bacot scored a career-high 24 points, tied his career best with six blocks and added 12 rebounds as 18th-ranked Tar Heels rallied in the second half to beat Charleston 94-83 on Tuesday night.

UNC rolls by No. 24 Michigan 72-51 in ACC/Big Ten Challenge

Caleb Love and Armando Bacot believed North Carolina could play better than it showed in back-to-back losses to ranked teams. The Tar Heels proved it against No. 24 Michigan.

Love scored 22 points to help UNC take control after halftime, and the Tar Heels handled the Wolverines 72-51 on Wednesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Banchero, No. 2 Duke beat Virginia Tech 76-65 in ACC opener

A.J. Griffin attacked the paint for a whistle-drawing basket, then headed toward the sideline to exchange excited high-fives with Duke's famously rowdy home fans.

After struggling to break loose against Virginia Tech, the second-ranked Blue Devils were showing off their edge behind Griffin, fellow freshman Paolo Banchero and a smaller-ball lineup that powered a second-half burst.

Banchero had 23 points and Duke shot 62% after halftime to beat Virginia Tech 76-65 on Wednesday night, erasing an eight-point deficit early in the second half to win its Atlantic Coast Conference opener.

Frosh duo helps No. 8 Duke beat Wake Forest without Coach K

Duke labored through two games with shaky shooting and turnover-prone play since returning from a COVID-19 outbreak.

This time the eighth-ranked Blue Devils got their offense rolling behind a blossoming freshman and an opportunistic defense — all without Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski on the sideline.

Paolo Banchero had 24 points and Duke hit 13 straight shots spanning halftime to blow it open and beat Wake Forest 76-64 on Wednesday night, turning in its best stretch of play since returning from a stoppage that included two postponed games.

Coach K back, No. 8 Duke rolls inside to beat NC State

Mark Williams patrolled the lane with an assertive edge that had him cleaning up misses, swatting away shots and scoring through contact from defenders flailing to stop him.

It was a reminder of the 7-foot-1 sophomore's potential up front for eighth-ranked Duke.

Williams had 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocks as Duke dominated inside to beat North Carolina State 88-73 Saturday in Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski's return from missing a game due to illness.

Griffin hits 5 3s, No. 6 Duke beats Syracuse 79-59

AJ Griffin attempted 10 shots Saturday, nine of them from behind the arc. If Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski had his way, Griffin would've put up even more.

"AJ is our best shooter. I'd really like for him to be even more aggressive," Krzyzewski said. "He's a key guy, there's no question about it. Every guy on our team has complete confidence in him."

Griffin hit five 3-pointers — the most by a Duke player this season — and the sixth-ranked Blue Devils routed visiting Syracuse 79-59.

After Coach K's exit, No. 9 Duke edges Wake Forest 76-74

Seemingly little went to plan for ninth-ranked Duke after halftime Tuesday, from being without its retiring Hall of Fame coach to blowing a huge lead in its famously rowdy arena.

The Blue Devils responded with composure to win anyway, led by their 34-year-old coach-in-waiting on the sideline and Mark Williams' final crash of the offensive glass.

Williams dunked in Paolo Banchero's missed drive with 0.4 seconds left to help Duke beat Wake Forest 76-74 on Tuesday night, capping a wild game that saw Mike Krzyzewski not coach after halftime because the team said he was "not feeling well."

Coach K returns, No. 9 Duke rolls past Florida State 88-70

Joey Baker hadn't seen a 3-pointer fall in three weeks for Duke. He stayed confident that it was just a matter of time.

When he got hot Saturday night, so did the ninth-ranked Blue Devils in finally stretching out a lead in a tight game.

Freshman forward Paolo Banchero scored 17 points and Baker had 12 first-half points to help Duke beat Florida State 88-70, a win coming with retiring Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski back after missing the second half of the previous game because he wasn't feeling well.

A.J. Griffin has late surge, No. 7 Duke beats Virginia 65-61

A.J. Griffin incurred the ire of coach Mike Krzyzewski when he passed on an open 3-pointer late in the No. 7 Blue Devils' tight game at Virginia.

"What are you doing? Just shoot. Like, you should shoot all the time, whenever you get it, and you next shot is the first shot" Krzyzewski said he told Griffin, a freshman and one of the top long-distance shooters in the country.

Griffin, who had missed seven of eight shots, got the message. He hit back-to-back 3-pointers and then scored on a drive, helping Duke hold on for a 65-61 victory Wednesday night.

Williams scores 28, No. 7 Duke beats Syracuse 97-72

With Syracuse's big man out for the season, the Orange again were no match for No. 7 Duke.

Mark Williams scored a career-high 28 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, Paolo Banchero had 21 points and dished out nine assists with one turnover in the heart of the Syracuse zone defense, and AJ Griffin added 20 points as the Blue Devils raced to a commanding early lead and beat Syracuse 97-72 on Saturday night.
