Love, Nance help No. 1 North Carolina beat Gardner-Webb

Barely a week into the season and there’s impatience for No. 1 North Carolina.

The Tar Heels can hardly wait to get better and start showing it.

“We’re used to it by now,” guard Caleb Love said. “We’re only three games in, but the mistakes we’re making at both ends of the court are unacceptable. We’re going to fix it. It’s everybody.”

Love scored 20 points and Pete Nance added 18 points as North Carolina fended off Gardner-Webb for a 72-66 victory Tuesday night.

No. 8 Duke locks down late, holds off Xavier 71-64

After a shaky offensive performance in the opening round of the Phil Knight Legacy tournament, Duke coach Jon Scheyer wanted to see Jeremy Roach get back to playing more instinctively, especially at the offensive end of the floor.

Roach responded with a season-high 21 points, Mark Mitchell added 16 and No. 8 Duke withstood Xavier's second-half comeback for a 71-64 win on Friday.

No. 17 Duke tops No. 25 Ohio State in ACC/Big Ten Challenge

Jon Scheyer knew it would take time for a Duke team with 11 new players to learn each other and how to close out games. Moments like Wednesday night - with the 17th-ranked Blue Devils tenaciously protecting a second-half lead against a ranked opponent- are vital for that process.

Freshman Kyle Filipowski had 16 points, including a key three-point play with 2:37 left, to help Duke beat No. 25 Ohio State 81-72 on Wednesday night in the final ACC/Big Ten Challenge, a solid bounceback performance after a loss to No. 5 Purdue.

Appleby, Wake Forest upend No. 14 Duke 81-70 in ACC play

Wake Forest had survived close games this season, even twice winning on a last-second shot. It was enough to have coach Steve Forbes deliver a message that resonated before playing No. 14 Duke.

The Demon Deacons responded by taking down the Blue Devils 81-70 on Tuesday night, turning in a confident performance that had them leading nearly the entire game. And it ended with the Demon Deacons (9-4, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) being able to celebrate throughout a final possession with a win well in hand.
