North Carolina women pull away late to beat SFA 79-66

North Carolina looked like it might add its name to the list of upset victims as March Madness descended upon the women’s NCAA Tournament.

A dominating fourth quarter kept the Tar Heels moving forward in the bracket.

Deja Kelly scored 28 points, Kennedy Todd-Williams added 15 and North Carolina pulled away in the fourth on Saturday night to beat Stephen F. Austin 79-66 in the Greensboro Region.

Van Lith gets 21, Louisville in Sweet 16 after beating Zags

Hailey Van Lith claims she’s not much of a dancer, but her moves Sunday kept Louisville around for at least another weekend.

The sophomore guard scored 21 points for Louisville in its 68-59 win over Gonzaga on Sunday. However, it was the emotional lift she provided to the top-seeded Cardinals that also helped them avoid the upset bug in the second round of the women’s NCAA Tournament.

Van Lith, Engstler lead Louisville past Lady Vols, 76-64

Hailey Van Lith and Emily Engstler knew Louisville had allowed far too many leads to slip away in the fourth quarter this season, including the disheartening loss to Miami in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament.

Van Lith and Engstler refused to let it happen again in the NCAA Tournament.

Van Lith poured in 23 points with six assists and was solid at the foul stripe down the stretch, while Emily Engstler had 20 points and 10 rebounds to help the top-seeded Cardinals withstand Tennessee’s frantic comeback for a 76-64 victory on Saturday that sent coach Jeff Walz’s bunch back to the Elite Eight for the fourth straight time.

Perez’s late basket lifts NC State to 66-63 win over Irish

Raina Perez decided to come back for one more season and hopefully lift N.C. State to new heights. The senior guard did just that, helping the Wolfpack advance to their first regional final in 24 years.

The senior guard stole the ball at midcourt and made a go-ahead layup with 14 seconds left to send the top-seeded Wolfpack to a 66-63 comeback win over No. 5 Notre Dame on Saturday.

South Carolina blows out Creighton, 80-50, to return to the Final Four

Top-seeded South Carolina (33-2) defeated 10-seed Creighton (23-10) Sunday night by the score of 80-50 to win the Greensboro Region of the NCAA Tournament and advance to the Final Four with hopes of avenging last year’s loss to Stanford at the same stage.
