Toppin, Crutcher lead No. 7 Flyers past Richmond, 87-79

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Jacob Gilyard gave Richmond a four-point lead over No. 7 Dayton in the first half, bringing the crowd at the Robins Center to its feet.

It was just the kind of situation the Flyers have come to relish.

Over 5 1/2 minutes, they outscored the Spiders 16-2, then added a 12-0 burst early in the second half for good measure in an 87-79 victory Saturday night.

Dayton has played plenty of close games despite its lofty ranking. Against Duquesne, the Flyers turned a possible rout into another nail-biter.

No. 7 Dayton (19-2, 8-0 Atlantic 10) led by 19 points in the second half on Wednesday night, but the Dukes (15-5, 5-3) pushed back with a 15-2 run and closed the gap to two points in the final minute.

Protecting the lead came down to Obi Toppin, the Flyers' leading scorer and reigning Atlantic 10 player of the year.

Toppin converted two free throws with 16 seconds left, giving him 22 points along with 10 rebounds. After a Duquesne turnover, the Flyers held on for a 73-69 victory.

No. 7 Dayton beats Fordham 70-56 for 16th straight over Rams

Trey Landers sees himself as more of a role player -- lock down on defense, provide senior leadership -- than a shooting star. With No. 7 Dayton's top outside shooters uncharacteristically struggling, he moved into a much bigger role.

Landers matched his season high with 18 points, Obi Toppin also had 18 and Dayton beat Fordham 70-56 Saturday for its 16th straight win over the Rams.

Crutcher leads No. 6 Dayton over Saint Louis 71-65

Jalen Crutcher's 3-point shot was off for a second straight game. With driving layups, floaters and free throws, he steadied sixth-ranked Dayton through another close call against Saint Louis.

Obi Toppin scored 17 points and Crutcher led a second-half rally that swept the Flyers to a 71-65 victory over the Billikens on Saturday, keeping Dayton unbeaten atop the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Toppin's 22 points lead No. 6 Dayton over Rhode Island 81-67

Obi Toppin saw his younger brother, Jacob, going up for a shot. Dayton's fabulous forward stretch out his long arm and swatted it away.

"I wasn't going to let little brother score on me," Toppin said. "I can't let that happen."

He and the Flyers had things well in hand in a match-up of the Atlantic 10's top teams.

Toppin scored 22 points and led an opening 17-point spurt Tuesday night as No. 6 Dayton surged to an 81-67 victory over Rhode Island, dominating a reunion of the Toppin brothers.

Toppin, No. 4 Dayton survive scare at George Mason

    - Even though the fourth-ranked Dayton Flyers have far bigger ambitions, Obi Toppin and his teammates were able to appreciate their first milestone in what has been an unprecedented season.

Toppin had 19 points and seven rebounds as Dayton survived a sluggish performance to beat George Mason 62-55 on Tuesday night and clinch at least a share of the Atlantic 10 regular-season title with three games to play.

Richmond ousts 5th-seeded Iowa with 67-63 1st-round win

Jacob Gilyard had an inkling a week ago — well before Richmond had even qualified for the NCAA Tournament — that the Spiders were capable of a first-round upset.

"Probably last Thursday," the fifth-year guard said, referring to the day Richmond began a four-win run to the Atlantic 10 Tournament title. "We're a fairly confident group and I think last weekend showed that."

Spiders coach Chris Mooney had a feeling long before then, he said in the wake of the 12th-seeded Spiders' 67-63 first-round win over Big Ten champion Iowa on Thursday.
