ESPN College GameDay To Visit Palestra
    For La Salle-Temple Game

PHILADELPHIA – ESPN College GameDay Covered By State Farm, the eight-week national studio show that airs Saturdays, will visit The Palestra on January 18 before La Salle takes on Temple at noon. College GameDay will begin at 10 AM on ESPNU and continues at 11 AM on ESPN. The La Salle versus Temple game will also appear on ESPN or ESPN2.

In addition to this year’s La Salle-Temple game being played at the Palestra, both schools agreed that the 2014-15 edition will also be played at The Palestra. La Salle will be the home team this season with Temple hosting in 2014-15. The schools agreed to bring the game to The Palestra for two straight seasons for the opportunity to bring ESPN GameDay to Philadelphia.

Tickets for the game will be split evenly between the two schools and the student section behind the ESPN GameDay set will also be divided equally.

Ranking the Games in ESPN’s Tip-off Marathon from Most to Least Intriguing (Jeff Eisenberg, The Dagger – August 12, 2013)

    3. VCU at Virginia, 7 p.m. EST

In Jan. 2012, Shaka Smart made waves when he insisted VCU and fellow CAA powers George Mason and Old Dominion had been better programs of late than their more well-known in-state ACC brethren, and "it's not even close." Now the Rams will have the chance to prove it head-to-head when they face Virginia for the first time since 1998. Bragging rights won't be easy to obtain, however, for either side. VCU returns the core of last year's NCAA tournament team, while Joe Harris-led Virginia appears capable of a top five finish in the ACC. The contrast in tempos also promises to be intriguing.

    7. LSU at UMass, 11 a.m. EST

This has the feel of a game that will matter more in March than it might seem in November. It would be a disappointment if LSU can't play its way into NCAA tournament contention this March considering forward Johnny O'Bryant delayed his NBA dreams to return to school for another year and point guard Anthony Hickey is back as well. Aspirations are similarly lofty this season at UMass, which will boast one of the nation's most exciting backcourt tandems in Chaz Williams and Western Kentucky transfer Derrick Gordon.

    14. Quinnipiac at La Salle, 9 a.m. EST

Everyone besides senior leader Ramon Galloway is back for La Salle from a team that went from the First Four to the Sweet 16 last month. Still, it's hard to get too excited about a game that begins at breakfast time and includes Quinnipiac.

Ranking the 24-Hour College Hoops Marathon (CBS Sports – August 13, 2013)

    4. VCU at Virginia (7 p.m., Nov. 12, ESPN2)

Nice contrast of styles in this one, as Havoc will go against the defensive-minded, slow-it-down mantra of Tony Bennett and Virginia. With that said, this should be a good intrastate battle where we get to see if both teams are set at the point guard spot.

    6. LSU at Massachusetts (11 a.m., Nov. 12, ESPN2)

Another game between two teams looking to break into the periphery of the NCAA tournament discussion. Massachusetts loves to get up and down, while LSU brings back four starters and welcomes Jarrell Martin into the fold.

    15. Quinnipiac at La Salle (9 a.m., Nov. 12, ESPN2)

The Explorers are coming off a surprising NCAA tournament run to the Sweet 16, and TV darling Tyrone Garland is back on the perimeter. Ramon Galloway will be a tough loss, but Dr. John Giannini's troops will be fine. Quinnipiac finished on a hot streak last year.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has partnered with NeuLion to launch a new Atlantic10.com and the Atlantic 10 Digital Network. The new website, which went online Thursday, offers expanded video, as well as a wide range of interactive features.

The website relaunch focuses on providing fans a clean, user friendly platform where they can get up to the minute news, standings, stats, championship information and much more on the league’s 21 sports whether at home or on their mobile device.

The newly designed A-10 Digital Network will allow fans of the league to watch hundreds of live events from across the conference, including the ability to purchase subscriptions that allow for school or league-wide passes.

In the ever changing world of social media, the site will also contain a contestant stream of the A-10 Twitter account and easy to access “fly-in” tabs for the league’s other social media mediums where fans will while being able to follow engage other fans of the league. In addition, the new site has easily accessible scores and standings, including a dynamic score ribbon across the top of the page.

The new digital platforms come on the heels of the A-10 announcing a comprehensive multimedia rights agreement with IMG College last week. The deal covers the league’s digital platforms, sponsorship rights to the league’s 21 championships, corporate sponsorships, at-event promotions, licensing and publications. The A-10 is also in the first year of a record television media rights agreement with ESPN, CBS Sports Network and NBC Sports Network.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—The 2013-14 Atlantic 10 men’s basketball conference schedule features a record number of nationally televised games as well as significant conference matchups, including 85 games with at least one team that participated in the 2013 postseason. The schedule and the games that will air nationally on ESPN, CBS Sports Network and NBCSN were announced Thursday by the A-10.

The first year of the conference’s eight-year media television partnership will feature a record 71 nationally televised games: 50 conference games, 14 premium non-conference contests and the quarterfinals, semifinals and final of the men’s basketball championship. The championship final will air on CBS Sports for the fifth straight year as part of the network’s Selection Sunday coverage.

“The Atlantic 10 is proud to be partnered with three of the largest and best media companies in the world; ESPN, CBS Sports Network and NBCSN who will distribute our games and programming to millions of households across the country, allowing our alumni and fans the opportunity to watch A-10 games on multiple national platforms,” stated Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. “The leagues’ strategic focus on our foundation as a nationally relevant basketball-centric conference has delivered a formidable media package, showcasing the best of our institutions, programs, coaches and student athletes.”

[IMG]College basketball preseason: 15 least appreciated players

    Quote:
Tyreek Duren, G, La Salle: There may be point guards in college basketball that are as good as this four-year starter, but nobody is better. Cool, calm, and beyond confident, the 6-foot Duren is one of the main reasons for the Explorers' turnaround during the past few seasons.

    Quote:
Patricio Garino, G/F, George Washington: If Garino could shoot, people would say he has a chance to be a right- handed Manu Ginobili. Seriously. The 6-6 sophomore does a little bit of everything and possesses an unbelievable feel and IQ. If Garino adds a reliable jump shot, he has a legitimate chance to have a long career at the next level.

    Quote:
Langston Galloway, G, Saint Joseph's: A terrific two-way player, Galloway has been incredibly productive during the past few seasons for Phil Martelli and the Hawks. Often required to defend the other team's top perimeter scorer, Galloway always has his imprints on all aspects of the game. There isn't a program in America where this 6-2 senior wouldn't have a chance to start. He's that good.

Dalonte Hill takes leave of absence

Maryland assistant coach Dalonte Hill is taking a leave of absence to focus on "personal matters," he said in a statement released by the school Tuesday.

The announcement comes after he was charged with drunken driving for the second time in less than two years and the third time in five years following a Sunday night traffic stop, according to media reports.

Hill faces five charges: driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, attempting to drive a vehicle while impaired by alcohol, attempting to drive a vehicle while impaired by alcohol and or/drugs, attempting to drive a vehicle while impaired by a controlled dangerous substance, and failure to control vehicle speed on a highway to avoid a collision.

The University of Richmond athletics department held an open house Thursday, and from the four brick-bordered video boards to the refinished court, evidence indicates the school reached its goal of a classy makeover.

The building is brighter thanks to new illumination men’s basketball coach Chris Mooney referred to as “HD lighting,” and seems to offer cleaner sound amplification.

“I think louder is better,” said Keith Gill, the school’s athletics director.

Mooney recognized the student section as the most important seating area in any college arena. In years past, most UR undergrads spread out high behind one basket in the same cushioned chairs occupied by other fans.

Now there is a consolidated student section closer to the floor with bleacher seating, which may be considered an encouragement to stand and cheer as a group.

Jordan Hare takes leave of absence

Rhode Island sophomore big man Jordan Hare has taken an indefinite leave of absence for personal reasons and his future with the program is uncertain.

The school announced Hare had taken the leave of absence Friday.

The 6-foot-10 Hare averaged 5.2 points and 4.0 rebounds while starting 19 games as a freshman last season and was expected to be a key piece for the Rams this season.

No. 14 VCU routs Illinois St. 96-58

Briante Weber didn't even have to think about it before he had an answer.

"The whole second half was wrong," he said Friday night after No. 14 VCU beat Illinois State 96-58, coasting through the second half after a near-perfect opening 20 minutes that sent them to the locker room with a 52-22 lead.

Treveon Graham's 3-pointer lifts No. 14 VCU past No. 25 Virginia

"Those are shots that I take almost every day in practice," Graham said of the shot with 1.1 seconds left that gave the 14th-ranked Rams a 59-56 victory over No. 25 Virginia. "I was confident enough to know if Rob would throw it back, I could make it."

Weber scores 16 to lead No. 14 VCU over Winthrop

It took a little while for VCU's vaunted pressure defense to get going. Eventually the 14th-ranked Rams were able to wear down Winthrop.

In the first half, VCU's Havoc defense forced its share of turnovers, just as often, it led to an open 3-pointer for a Winthrop guard. The second half wasn't quite the same for upset-minded Winthrop as the 3s stopped falling and the Rams pulled away for a 92-71 victory Saturday night.

No. 10 VCU prevails to hold off Long Beach State's upset attempt

A day after learning what it felt like to be humbled, No. 10 Virginia Commonwealth learned how to benefit from the experience.

After being virtually beaten at their own fast-paced style in a loss to Florida State, the Rams found a way to win with their late-game toughness in a 73-67 victory over Long Beach State on Friday in the consolation bracket of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

UMass uses late 14-0 run to put away No. 19 New Mexico

Massachusetts coach Derek Kellogg waited for No. 19 New Mexico to wear out and had his Minutemen ready when the time came.

Chaz Williams scored 19 points and Raphiael Puntey added 18 as Massachusetts ran past the weary, 19th-ranked Lobos 81-65 Friday to reach the Charleston Classic championship.
