Kersgieter, Chatzileonti put Kansas women over Ga Tech 77-58

Once Kansas set its mind on not getting outhustled for even one more possession, the Jayhawks took over.

Ioanna Chatzileonti had 15 points and 10 rebounds, Holly Kersgieter scored 19 points and eighth-seeded Kansas beat ninth-seeded Georgia Tech 77-58 on Friday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Lee, No. 9 Kansas State beat No. 8 Washington State 50-40

    upload_2022-3-21_10-21-16.png

Washington State put Ayoka Lee at the top of its scouting report.

It was apparent early on in the No. 8 Cougars’ clash with No. 9 Kansas State that the emphasis was on making things difficult for the 6-foot-6 center.

But even after making just one field goal in the first half, and her Wildcats trailing at intermission, Lee never lost focus.

“That was definitely just a struggle in the first half,” Lee said. “Things just opened up more as we continued to play together. This was kind of a grind-through-it game. We kept working hard.”

Lee finished with 20 points and 15 rebounds as Kansas State overcame a frustrating defensive scheme from Washington State and won 50-40 in the first round of the women’s NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

No. 2 Texas two-steps all over No. 7 Utah in 78-56 NCAA Tournament victory

During a pregame press conference, senior Joanne Allen-Taylor made the game plan for the No. 2-seed Texas Longhorns to survive the No. 7-seed Utah Utes abundantly clear. “We just have to be really tough on the ball. Extremely aggressive on ball,” the guard affirmed when asked how to overcome the dynamic Utes whose prolific offense has been lauded as the best in the nation.

Few could have imagined just how aggressive the Longhorns would be on Sunday afternoon as they silenced the Utah Utes offense led by PAC 12 Freshman of the Year, Gianna Kneepens, in a 78-56 rout. The thrilling victory marks the final collegiate athletic event to be played in the 45-year history of the Frank Erwin Center as the venue formally closed following tonight’s final whistle.
