Carrington's 26 leads No. 23 Seton Hall past Wagner

Seton Hall didn't appreciate the way it unraveled down the stretch against in-state rival Rutgers, ending a five-game winning streak.

"We controlled that game and the way we lost was disappointing," Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard said. "I thought it was really important for the guys to clear their heads a little bit."

So Willard gave the 23rd-ranked Pirates a few days off from practice to regroup and recoup. It showed Wednesday night in the Pirates' 89-68 victory over Wagner at the Prudential Center.

No. 9 Xavier holds off Northern Iowa 77-67

With conference play on the horizon, Xavier found itself in a hostile gym against a quality opponent -- something the Musketeers will experience quite a bit in the weeks to come.

Xavier held off multiple pushes from pesky Northern Iowa on Friday night in what it hopes is a sign of things to come.

J.P. Macura scored 15 points and the ninth-ranked Musketeers hung on to beat the Panthers 77-67 for its seventh straight win.

No. 1 Villanova routs Hofstra behind Bridges and 5 others

As Jay Wright recalled, the proposal was made by Ed Manetta.

Essentially, the question was: Would the head coach of the Villanova Wildcats want to return to his Long Island roots by bringing his team to the Nassau Coliseum for a game?

It was an offer he could not pass up.

"I said, `Yeah, it's perfect.' And I said, `Could we play Hofstra?" Wright said after No. 1 Villanova remained unbeaten with a 95-71 rout of the Pride on Friday night at the Nassau Coliseum.

No. 6 Xavier takes league opener, holds off Marquette 91-87

If Xavier coach Chris Mack had his way, his team wouldn't have to worry about basketball at Christmas.

A win to open Big East play in a tough environment eases some of the sting of being away from home.

Trevon Blueitt had 23 points, J.P. Macura scored 11 of his 15 points in the second half and the sixth-ranked Musketeers beat Marquette 91-87 to survive a road test on Wednesday night.

Bridges scores 20 as No. 1 Villanova pounds DePaul 103-85

In his 17 seasons at Villanova, Jay Wright can't recall coaching a more efficient offense. The way the Wildcats are clicking, it's not hard to see why he feels that way.

Mikal Bridges scored 20 points, Phil Booth added 17 points and six assists, and No. 1 Villanova made it look easy, beating DePaul 103-85 on Wednesday night in the Big East opener for both teams.

No. 23 Seton Hall rallies to beat No. 25 Creighton

Khadeen Carrington, Desi Rodriguezand Angel Delgado came back for their senior seasons at Seton Hall looking to make a run at the Big East title, and they are not letting anything get in their way.

Down 13 points early in the second half to No. 25 Creighton, no sweat. Down a point late with Delgado heading to the bench with five fouls, no problem.

All they had to do was find a way to win, and that's exactly what the 23rd-ranked Pirates (12-2, 1-0) did.

Carrington hit a go-ahead layup with 2:05 to play and Seton Hall held Creighton scoreless for the final 3:32 in posting a 90-84 victory in the Big East Conference opener for both schools on Thursday night.

Down by 16, No. 6 Xavier rallies for 77-72 win over DePaul

No. 6 Xavier is tired of pulling off these huge second-half comebacks.

J.P. Macura scored 19 points and had a steal and a blocked shot in the final minute Saturday, completing the Musketeers' rally from a 16-point deficit to a 77-72 victory over DePaul.

    Foster's 18 leads No. 25 Creighton past Providence 83-64

Creighton didn't wallow in the disappointment of letting a win in its Big East opener slip away. There was no time for that.

The No. 25 Bluejays turned in a steady performance from start to finish against cold-shooting Providence on Sunday, getting 18 points from Marcus Foster and leading by double digits most of way in an 83-64 victory. Three days earlier, Creighton squandered a double-digit second-half lead in a loss at Seton Hall.

No. 23 Seton Hall beats St. John's 75-70

Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard was a little concerned going into the No. 23 Pirates' game against St. John's on Sunday at the Prudential Center,

"Khadeen (Carrington) has the flu," Willard said. "Myles (Powell) turned his ankle in practice. Angel (Delgado) has had the flu and Desi (Rodriguez) is just getting over it. They all battled through practices."
And when Willard found out that St. John's was going to play Sunday without scoring leader Shamorie Ponds, out with a knee injury he suffered in the loss to Providence, Willard's concerns grew more.

"When we found out that Shamorie wasn't going to play, it's human nature to relax just a little," Willard said.

But the Pirates managed to recover in time and hold off the feisty Red Storm.

The Pirates got 24 points from Carrington, and 23 points and nine rebounds from Rodriguez to hold off an undermanned Red Storm squad 75-70.

No. 5 Xavier beats Butler 86-79 for 10th straight victory

With their balance, depth and wealth of experience, No. 5 Xavier aims to turn its very good start into something special in the Big East.

J.P. Macura scored 15 of his 20 points in the first half to get Xavier rolling, and Trevon Bluiett had 21 points as the Musketeers won their 10th in a row, beating Butler 86-79 on Tuesday night.

Providence upsets No. 5 Xavier, snapping Musketeers' 10-game win streak

Another layup bounced off the rim, Providence forward Rodney Bullock grabbed the defensive rebound with about 20 seconds left and Xavier coach Chris Mack stood in front of his bench with both hands in the air.

    It was time to surrender.

The best start in Musketeers history was over, along with the second-longest winning streak in Mack's tenure at the school.

"It certainly wasn't our day," Mack said Saturday after fifth-ranked Xavier lost to the Friars 81-72 to snap a 10-game winning streak. "We know who Providence is. We know what each of their strengths is. But being able to take it away, that's different."

Brunson, No. 3 Villanova bounce back, beat Marquette 100-90

Perfect record ruined and No. 1 ranking gone, Villanova couldn't wait to play again.

The schedule, though, made the Wildcats wait a week.

"We learned that it's really hard to have a week off after getting your butt kicked," coach Jay Wright said.

Jalen Brunson had 27 points and eight assists and No. 3 Villanova bounced back from its first loss of the season by holding off Marquette 100-90 on Saturday night.

No. 21 Seton Hall rallies from 11 down to beat Butler 90-87

Seton Hall never panicked. The Pirates simply stuck to their game plan.

Even when they fell behind by double digits, the Pirates knew if they wanted to win the game they couldn't afford to lose their composure.

Angel Delgado scored 28 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, Khadeen Carringtonfinished with 29 points and No. 21 Seton Hall overcame an 11-point deficit to defeat Butler 90-87 on Saturday.

Marquette takes down No. 13 Seton Hall 84-64

For all the attention Marquette receives for its 3-point shooting, coach Steve Wojciechowski would rather have his team attack the rim.

Andrew Rowsey scored 31 points and set the tone early by driving the lane, and the Golden Eagles used a 16-0 run in the second half to pull away from No. 13 Seton Hall 84-64 on Tuesday night.

No. 13 Seton Hall beats Georgetown

On Friday night, after No. 13 Seton Hall practiced for the final time before playing Georgetown on Saturday, the Pirates had a special guest -- none other than former Pirates coach P.J. Carlesimo.

Carlesimo, who led Seton Hall from 1982 through 1994, was in town for a special 25th anniversary presentation honoring his 1992-93 Pirates team that won both the Big East regular season and tournament championships. He paid a visit to practice and spoke to the team.

"P.J's message was if you want to be good in March, you have to be good now," said Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard, after his team defeated Georgetown 74-61. "It was a really good message for my guys. It was good to be able to pick his brain and listen to the stories he tells. I can't measure what he's done for the school. I'm still waiting for us to put up a statue of him for everything he did."

Kerem Kanter rallies No. 11 Xavier over St. John's 88-82

Chris Mack didn't get to do much as a Xavier player because of knee injuries. As the Musketeers' coach, nobody has won more games.

Kerem Kanter scored 22 points and made the biggest plays during a late run that swept the 11th-ranked Musketeers to an 88-82 victory over St. John's on Wednesday night, making Mack the school's leader in career coaching wins.
