Friars' lineup change works in 65-61 win over No. 16 Butler

Providence coach Ed Cooley made a bold move Saturday.

He benched his best player so he could start his two biggest players side by side against No. 16 Butler.

Then the struggling Friars saw the strategy pay off. Luwane Pipkins hit six straight free throws in the final minute, finished with 22 points and helped Providence hold on 65-61 for its first road victory over a ranked team in nearly three years.

Powell leads No. 12 Seton Hall past No. 10 Villanova 70-64

Myles Powell took a seat on the bench with his fourth foul, put his cheerleader hat on and had full confidence in his Seton Hall teammates – and they showed why.

Powell had 19 points, Sandro Mamukelashvili scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half and the No. 12 Pirates snapped a 17-game road losing streak to Villanova with a 70-64 victory over the No. 10 Wildcats on Saturday.

No. 19 Butler holds off Xavier, loses Thompson to injury

Butler coach LaVall Jordan was looking at how his team could improve.

"We had good team conversation after the Marquette loss (Sunday) about where we can get better and a big part of that was the bench," Jordan said. "Henry Baddley and our seniors really stepped up."

Butler's bench outscored Xavier's 23-6 as the 19th-ranked Bulldogs beat the Musketeers 66-61 on Wednesday night. Jordan Tucker scored 10 points and Baddley added nine to lead the reserves. Among the starters, Sean McDermott scored a team-high 14 points and Kamar Baldwin had 11.

Robinson-Earl leads No. 15 Villanova past No. 18 Marquette

On a night Villanova retired the jersey of one of its greatest point guards, its current point guard came through in the clutch.

Collin Gillespie had 14 points and hit a pivotal 3-pointer with 2:03 remaining, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl had 17 points and 11 rebounds and No. 15 Villanova held on for a 72-71 victory over No. 18 Marquette on Wednesday night to snap a three-game losing streak.

No. 23 Creighton tops 10th-ranked Seton Hall 87-82

There is more to the Big East Conference this season than Seton Hall, Villanova, Butler and Marquette. Watch out for Creighton.

Damien Jefferson, Ty-Shon Alexander, Marcus Zegarowski and Denzel Mahoney all scored 18 points and No. 23 Bluejays posted their second road win over a Top 10 team this month with an 87-82 decision over No. 10 Seton Hall on Wednesday night.

Mamukelashvili shot at buzzer lifts Seton Hall over Butler

With the game tied and less than a second to play, Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard had a feeling Butler would be looking for Pirates' leading scorer Myles Powell to get the ball.

So he called a play Sandro Mamukelashvili, one he had seen a couple of months ago watching the Sacramento Kings on television in the wee hours of the morning.

Mamukelashvili hit an off-balance shot in the lane at the buzzer to give No. 16 Seton Hall a stunning 74-72 victory over No. 21 Butler on Wednesday night.

No. 12 Villanova beats St. John's 71-60 on night for Lowry

Kyle Lowry was as headstrong as any Villanova star to wear the uniform, and nearly wore out his welcome with coach Jay Wright before he ever hit the court. The two have since become extremely tight, and when Lowry returned for a night in his honor, Wright requested a picture with Lowry and his two young sons, and a trio of former Wildcats. When the fussy kids were still shooting hoops, Lowry wrangled them over for a quick picture.

"They listen way better than you did," Wright cracked.

"They know I don't play," Lowry said.

The photo opp still fresh in his mind, Wright smiled as he said, "That was my favorite part of tonight."

But No. 12 Villanova's 70-61 survive-to-the-finish victory over St. John's on Wednesday night was certainly a close second. The Wildcats had 13 turnovers, two offensive rebounds, and trouble shaking the Red Storm until late on a night the program saluted Lowry. Lowry, a five-time All-Star guard for the NBA champion Toronto Raptors, might have provided a dose inspiration for the young Wildcats (22-6, 11-4 Big East).
