    Eddie Jordan to coach Rutgers

Los Angeles Lakers assistant Eddie Jordan has agreed to become Rutgers' head coach, a source confirmed to ESPN's Brett McMurphy.

Jordan will receive a five-year contract, the source told McMurphy. The Star-Ledger reported that Jordan's deal is worth more than $1 million per year.

A New Big East Is a Better Big East
    By JACK STYCZYNSKI

For this basketball junkie, it’s a welcome sight to watch the schools that sold out to football depart a league that was founded on great hoops. No more threats, rumors or innuendos about leaving. Just be gone, now and forever. Let this be a time for rhapsody.

Georgetown, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall — keep standing tall.
Villanova, Marquette, DePaul — may you never fall.
Now add Xavier, Butler, Creighton — and just for rhymes — Saint Louis and Dayton.

    Eli Carter leaving Rutgers

Eli Carter, Rutgers' leading scorer last season, is the latest to leave the program in the wake of the Mike Rice scandal.

"I have officially been released from Rutgers mens basketball team and I'm exploring all options," Carter tweeted Friday. In a subsequent tweet, he added, "My experience at Rutgers has been great but it's time for me to move on now! I appreciate you all. Thanks!"

Carter, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound sophomore shooting guard from Paterson, N.J., averaged 14.9 points per game this past season, which was cut short when he suffered a fractured right fibula in a Feb. 16 game against DePaul.

    The Fox Sports 1 Plan:
    Bundle Broadcast Rights Deals,
Make Pay TV Customers Foot The Bill

The two national Fox Sports networks should successfully shift the costs of all those sports contracts — including one deal for a game on their over-the-air network — onto every pay TV subscriber in America.

This new national network is more, though, than just a simple money grab. Fox has one reason for thrusting a national sports channel on us now: to consolidate all of its non-NFL sports properties and shift the costs of all those contracts — including that shiny new 12-year, $500 million deal with the reconfigured Big East — to consumers.

    Eddie Jordan to Rutgers official

Rutgers introduced Eddie Jordan as its new men's basketball coach Tuesday, turning to a name from the school's past as it seeks to move forward from a scandal that forced the firing of coach Mike Rice and the resignation of athletic director Tim Pernetti.

The 58-year-old Jordan played for the Scarlet Knights from 1973-77 and was a member of Rutgers' Final Four team in 1976. Most recently he's been an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Shabazz Napier to stay at UConn

Connecticut guard Shabazz Napier announced Friday he will pass on the NBA draft and remain in school for his senior season.

"I am very much looking forward to getting closer to receiving my college degree, as well as becoming a stronger leader for my teammates on and off the court," Napier said in a statement. "We think we have a great team for next season and we're excited about playing for a conference championship and in the NCAA tournament."

UConn went 20-10 last season but was barred from the Big East and NCAA tournaments after failing to qualify academically.

New Big East Commissioner to be Named this Week

The new Big East is still rounding into form, but it is getting closer to becoming a fully functioning body. We know the teams (there are ten of them), the conference has a TV contract (Fox Sports), and we know the conference tournament will remain at the legendary Madison Square Garden in March, but now this whole operation just needs a commissioner.

That should be settled this week.

    American hires Mike Brennan

American University hired former Georgetown assistant Mike Brennan as its men's basketball coach on Tuesday.

The 17th coach in the program's history, Brennan replaced Jeff Jones, who left for the same position at Old Dominion earlier this month after 13 seasons with the Eagles.

    John Cahill to supervise officials
    [IMG]

The supervisor of officials for the “new” Big East Conference, which will be officially recognized by the NCAA on August 1, will be a face familiar to many fans who have followed the holdovers for years.

That person would be John Cahill, who makes the move from the floor after forty years as a game official. Cahill’s final game was this year’s national title game between Louisville and Michigan, and in the story by Pete Dougherty of the Albany Times-Union Cahill stated that initially had second thoughts in regards to his decision to retire.

NCAA Division I Board recognizes New Big East as a conference
    [IMG]

Another significant hurdle was cleared on Thursday, when the NCAA's Division I Board of Directors met and officially recognized the new Big East Conference as a Division I multisport conference, effective on August 1, 2013. The conference, founded by Villanova, Georgetown, Marquette, St. John's, Providence, Seton Hall, DePaul, Xavier, Butler and Creighton, will launch for the 2013-14 academic and athletic year.

The Board similarly noted that the current Big East Conference would become the American Athletic Conference ("The American") on July 1, 2013, clearing the way for the new conference to adopt the Big East name. The American will retain the Big East's permanent seat on the Division I Board of Directors and their three votes.

St. John's looks like a big fish
in the new Big East Conference

The reconfigured Big East, now with seven teams from the old Big East plus Creighton, Xavier and Butler will begin play in 2013-14. The conference contains some basketball powers, including five N.C.A.A. tournament teams from 2012-13.

St. John's, however, hasn't made the tournament since 2010-11, a drought matched only by Seton Hall, DePaul and Providence.

Seton Hall and DePaul look like bottom-feeders for next season as well. Providence should be better, though they lose guard Vincent Council.

Source confirms Syracuse will schedule Villanova in basketball
    [IMG]

Villanova is headed to the Dome this coming season as part of a 1-1-1 series with the game in Syracuse, a return meeting the following season at the Wells Fargo Center, and in the 2015-16 season a game at Madison Square Garden that could be part of a college basketball doubleheader.

    Huskies snare guard Daniel Hamilton

Following a Nike EYBL game Friday night, guard Daniel Hamilton (Los Angeles/St. John Bosco) committed to Connecticut.

Hamilton is ESPN's No. 27 overall junior. The 6-foot-6 wing is the brother of former Texas guard Jordan Hamilton and UTEP-bound wing Isaac Hamilton.

New Big East meetings set to begin with no commissioner

The sun will be warm, the drinks will be cool, the rooms at the 5-star resort in West Palm Beach will be plush.

Welcome to the world of the new Big East Conference, which will gather for the first time at the spring meetings this weekend, planning a future which will officially begin on July 1.

No commissioner is expected to be named during the meetings, but a decision is expected before the end of May.

    * They have hired a stenographer to record the proceedings of the meeting.

    * They have hired a New York publication firm, Rubenstein Associates, with a point person Alice McGillian serving as the public voice on all Big East matters.

    * They have hired former Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe to guide them through the interim period.

    * They are talking with some old American Athletic Conference officials about making the move to the new Big East.

    * They will have the conference office in New York City.

    * They should pick and announce their new commissioner before the end of May.

How The New Big East Coaches Stack Up
    [IMG]

we inch closer and closer to the commencement of the revamped Big East, now is a good time to take a look at the names and stats of those who will coach the ten teams of this “new” conference.

Keep in perspective that from the 2012-13 to 2013-14 school years, the Big East will lose basketball coaches that accounted for well over 2,600 career wins including a Hall of Famer (Jim Boeheim) and a Hall of Famer-to-be (Rick Pitino).

Losing those two coaches alone tremendously impacts the credibility of the conference in the short term, but do not be fooled; there is PLENTY of coaching talent that have proved to make deep runs in the NCAAs. There is, however, a name or two with a seat too warm for comfort. Take a look at the table below (all info provided by sports-reference.com) and the observations that follow it.

Fox Sports 2 likely to launch in August alongside
    Fox Sports 1

News Corp.'s Fox Sports will launch not one, but two new national sports cable channels in August, according to people familiar with the plan.

In March, Fox Sports said it would debut Fox Sports 1 on Aug. 17. At the time, the company downplayed talk that it had plans for a second national service -- Fox Sports 2 -- as well.

But now insiders say Fox Sports 2 will launch around the same time and perhaps even the same day as Fox Sports 1. The new channel will take the place of Fuel TV, a News Corp.-owned network that currently carries a heavy load of Ultimate Fighting Championship programming.

While Fox Sports 1 is getting a big marketing push behind it, Fox Sports 2 will have a much softer launch. It is unclear what sports will be on the new channel initially besides mixed martial arts. Fox Sports 1 already has an impressive lineup for a start-up that includes NASCAR, college football and basketball, with regular-season and postseason Major League Baseball coming in 2014.

Well, former Big 12 Commish Dan Beebe is helping the Big East presidents sort things out. But he's only temporary. Still, there are things that look vaguely familiar.

There are reports by East Coast media outlets that Georgetown is running the show. That the presidents haven't found a commissioner yet because they want one they can push around. They don't want a Gavitt or Mike Tranghese, larger than life leadership.

Could this league turn into a situation where a few old guard Big East schools run the show and everyone else does as told?

    Pre-Summer Big East POWER RANKINGS
    [IMG]

    1. Marquette Golden Eagles

It’s unlikely that anyone was tagging Marquette as a serious Final Four contender if Vander Blue had returned for his senior season, but their chances of reaching the third weekend of the NCAA Tournament would have been much higher if he did. Nonetheless, the Golden Eagles return big men Davante Gardner and Chris Otule, along with Todd Mayo to run the point and Jamil Wilson as a stretch forward. Juan Anderson has also elected to return to the team after contemplating transferring. That’s an already solid group that will allow Marquette to contend in the Big East, but they are also welcoming the best recruiting class in the conference and the 11th best in the country per ESPN.
