No. 8 Providence rallies from 19 down, beats Butler in OT

Ed Cooley found himself settling in and settling down as No. 8 Providence steadily cut into Butler's lead Sunday.

The Providence coach believed his tested, talented roster would eventually respond to the challenge of erasing a 19-point, second-half deficit. He wasn't disappointed.

Jared Bynum made two free throws with 38 seconds left in overtime and No. 8 Providence got the defensive stop it needed to rally for a crucial 71-70 victory.

Cole's drive, defense lift No. 21 UConn over No. 8 Villanova

UConn's first win over Villanova during the Dan Hurley era came with the head coach watching the game on television in the back of the arena.

R.J. Cole hit a driving floater with 5.9 seconds left and then took a charge from Collin Gillespie at the other end of the court to rally No. 21 Connecticut to a 71-69 victory over the eighth-ranked Wildcats on Tuesday night.

Bynum's 27 points lift No. 11 Providence over Xavier in 3 OT

Providence coach Ed Cooley has been hearing a lot about how lucky his team has been to keep winning close games.

He hopes to start hearing about how much talent his 11th-ranked Friars have as well.

Jared Bynum scored 27 points, including a key 3-pointer to help Providence hold off Xavier 99-92 in triple overtime Wednesday night.

Kalkbrenner takes over, Bluejays hold off No. 18 UConn 64-62

The days of Ryan Kalkbrenner huffing and puffing his way up and down the court are long gone.

Creighton's 7-foot sophomore showed boundless energy and emotion Wednesday night when his team needed him most, pumping his fist and letting out primal screams dunk after dunk as he willed the Bluejays to a 64-62 win over No. 18 Connecticut.

Creighton routs No. 11 Providence to reach Big East final

After tearing apart the top seed, Creighton has another chance to finally finish the job at the Big East Tournament.

Arthur Kaluma scored 17 points and triggered an overwhelming blitz that sent the surging Bluejays into the championship game with a stunning 85-58 blowout of No. 11 Providence in the semifinals Friday night.

No. 8 Villanova topples No. 20 UConn to make Big East final

Jermaine Samuels tossed up off-balance shots that fluttered through the net and 3s that had Villanova rocking. Brandon Slater may as well had his name in lights on the marquee with a block that will live in Big East lore.

Just the way UConn drew it up?

"We dared them to beat us," coach Danny Hurley said.

Sure enough, the Huskies minimized the damage from Villanova stars Collin Gillespie and Justin Moore, knocking the door open for Samuels and Slater to get the Wildcats to another conference championship game.

Samuels had 21 points and 12 rebounds, Slater had 15 points and a highlight-reel block to help No. 8 Villanova beat No. 20 Connecticut 63-60 on Friday night.

Villanova tops Creighton to win Big East title

While Collin Gillespie waited to twirl the souvenir net from atop a ladder he could not have climbed a year ago, he was spotted by another former Villanova star who knows how to win a championship game in crunch time.

Kris Jenkins joked maybe it was his and Gillespie's shared uniform No. 2 that made the Wildcats so fearless when the outcome was at stake. Or maybe it's just the Wildcat Way forged under coach Jay Wright of shaking off nerves, bad shots, a stifling defense, whatever distraction got in their way, to always hit that next big shot and win the next big game.

"I mean, that's what we expect," Jenkins said.

Gillespie missed the Big East Tournament a season ago, then won it for the Wildcats this year.

    It's what they expect.

Gillespie nailed consecutive late 3-pointers that put No. 8 Villanova ahead for good, and the Wildcats beat Creighton 54-48 to take the Big East Tournament championship Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.

Providence snaps South Dakota State's streak at 21 in NCAA

Providence coach Ed Cooley knows it takes some good fortune to make a long run in the NCAA Tournament.

So if anyone wants to call his gritty Friars lucky, that's fine by him.

Al Durham had 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists and Jared Bynum made three big free throws with 29.9 seconds left as Providence snapped the longest winning streak in the country by beating South Dakota State 66-57 Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Creighton rallies, gets 72-69 OT victory over San Diego St

Trey Alexander still being in the game late in regulation and overtime was improbable enough for Creighton.

Never mind the freshman making the tying and winning plays while playing with four fouls since early in the second half.

Alexander converted a go-ahead, three-point play late in overtime, and the Bluejays rallied for a 72-69 victory over San Diego State in an NCAA Tournament opener Thursday night.

Villanova breezes past Delaware 80-60 in NCAA 1st round

Villanova's hangover from another Big East title lasted maybe 10 minutes. Once the Wildcats found their footing, they ran away from scrappy Delaware.

Justin Moore scored 21 points, Collin Gillespie added 14 and second-seeded Villanova had little trouble with the 15th-seeded Blue Hens, breezing to an 80-60 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.

Providence routs Richmond to get to 1st Sweet 16 in 25 years

As the clock ticked down on Providence's best performance of the season, Friars fans behind the bench were chanting coach Ed Cooley's name.

The hometown hero who grew up dreaming of an opportunity to be part of Providence basketball is taking the Friars to their first Sweet 16 in 25 years.

"I just can't tell you how grateful I feel for our players, our college, our city," Cooley said. "It's hard to get to this point. We're just a little school that everybody says, oh, it's Providence. Well, Providence is in the damn building."

Noah Horchler had 16 points and 14 rebounds and the hot-shooting Friars routed 12th-seeded Richmond 79-51 on Saturday night in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

    Villanova defeats Michigan, 63-55

Jermaine Samuels is usually a cool customer, with a friendly manner about him, letting his game do most of his talking. In the second half Thursday inside the AT&T Center, NCAA Sweet 16, the Villanova fifth-year forward played it entirely different. Samuels took a charge and emerged off the floor, on the run, pumping his first like a blitzing linebacker who had pulled off the game’s big sack.

In the end, it wasn’t emotion that carried the day for Villanova. It was Samuels, for very large portions of this one. Villanova advanced past Michigan, 63-55, with Samuels leading all scorers with 22 points. The early minutes featured his ability to put up soft, driving, contested layups that spin in from weird angles. The late minutes, a Samuels quick step past Michigan biggest man Hunter Dickinson gave Villanova its final separation, for a 56-50 lead with 2 minutes, 22 seconds left.

Kalkbrenner leads No. 9 Creighton in 96-61 rout of N Dakota

After a flat performance in its opener, No. 9 Creighton looked like the team it was expected to be.

Ryan Kalkbrenner scored a career-high 24 points and the Bluejays finished off North Dakota early in a 96-61 rout on Thursday night. It was a big improvement from Monday, when they didn't pull away from St. Thomas until the final 10 minutes of a 72-60 win.

Dunn's late free throws help Temple stun No. 16 Villanova

Khalif Battle got lost in a swarm of delirious Temple students that had mobbed the court in celebration of one of the program's wildest wins in years.

    Just one problem.

The tiniest of ticks were stuck on the clock.

Damian Dunn drew a foul on a driving layup with 1.1 seconds left and made both free throws as Temple beat No. 16 Villanova 68-64 on Friday night, sending the Owls' fans into a court-storming frenzy - twice! - at Liacouras Center.

Hey, it had been 10 years since the Owls knocked off mighty Villanova. What's a few more seconds?
