Villanova outlasts Iowa in OT to win Atlantis title

A second straight night, against a ranked opponent, and all accompanied by plenty of dramatics.

Villanova seems to be relishing these moments.

Tournament MVP James Bell scored 20 points and sparked a huge Villanova rally, Josh Hart added 16 off the bench and the Wildcats beat No. 23 Iowa 88-83 in overtime to claim the Battle 4 Atlantis championship on Saturday night.

No. 14 Villanova remains perfect, tops Penn 77-54

Villanova returned from the Bahamas with three wins, a trophy and a national ranking.

The Wildcats could have used an extended stay on the island.

Darrun Hilliard scored 19 points and No. 14 Villanova overcame a 7:29 scoreless stretch to open the second half in beating Penn 77-54 on Wednesday night.

No. 14 Villanova romps past Saint Joseph's, 98-68

Jay Wright expected another classic city rivalry game, where fans are rowdy and the score tight until the final buzzer.

So often, the tense finishes are in the DNA of Philly hoops, no matter the records.

    Just not this one.

James Bell had 25 points and 14 rebounds and JayVaughn Pinkston scored 27 points, keeping No. 14 Villanova unbeaten with a 98-68 win over Saint Joseph's on Saturday night.

Darrun Hilliard, No. 10 Villanova thump city rival La Salle

Villanova coach Jay Wright gave his usual rah-rah pregame speech on how much it means to play a game in one of the more cherished series' in college hoops.

Big 5 basketball. Round-robin play among five Philadelphia Division-I basketball teams that dates to 1955 and has been defined by hostile, split crowds and last-shot theatrics.

The Wildcats have created a new kind of flavor in the Big 5 -- a dominant one.

Darrun Hilliard scored 21 points and Josh Hart added 13, lifting undefeated No. 10 Villanova past La Salle, 73-52 on Sunday.

    AD resignation shocked Buzz Williams

Marquette coach Buzz Williams said Saturday he was shocked by the sudden resignation of athletic director Larry Williams.

Larry Williams ran Marquette's athletic department for two years before he stepped down on Friday to pursue leadership opportunities outside of the university. Bill Cords, who served as Marquette's athletic director from 1987 to 2006, is returning to the post until a replacement is named.

Buzz Williams says he found out about the resignation after practice on Friday.

    Gene Teague suffers head injury

Seton Hall center Gene Teague was wheeled off the court on a stretcher and hospitalized Friday night with a head injury.

He had dominated play with 18 points and 11 rebounds until a hard foul resulted in a scary fall with 14:42 remaining in the Pirates' 90-58 win over Lafayette.

Teague, a 6-foot-9 senior, was in the air taking an off-balance shot when he was knocked on his back by Michael Hoffman. Teague lay flat on his back, moaning, and was taken off the court with his neck stabilized after a delay of about 14 minutes.

    Marquette's Duane Wilson to redshirt

Marquette freshman and key point guard recruit Duane Wilson will redshirt this season because of a left leg injury.

Wilson missed most of the preseason after sustaining a stress fracture in mid-October. Marquette announced the move Friday and said Wilson only recently returned to practice on a limited basis.

No. 11 Villanova outlasts Butler in OT thriller to open Big East play

JayVaughn Pinkston had a chance to win the game in regulation for No. 11 Villanova, and missed.

He had to settle for making sure the Wildcats got an overtime road win.
Pinkston scored 20 points, including the clinching free throws in overtime, as Villanova overcame a rally by Butler for a 76-73 victory Tuesday night.

No. 11 Villanova romps over Providence 91-61

Dylan Ennis and Ryan Arcidiacono chased a loose ball and knocked heads, sending both to the Villanova bench.

Leading by 30 points, the double noggin-knocker to their key backcourt scorers was about the Wildcats' only scare of the game.

Ennis and Arcidiacono were fine, sharing a chuckle on the bench over their accidental head butt and winning their latest laugher.

JayVaughn Pinkston scored 19 points, Ennis had 17 and No. 11 Villanova led all the way in a 91-61 romp over Providence on Sunday night.

    Grant Gibbs out 4-6 weeks

Creighton's Grant Gibbs suffered a dislocated kneecap and will be out four to six weeks, the senior guard told ESPN's Jeff Goodman on Wednesday.

Gibbs suffered the injury while fighting for a rebound during the Bluejays' 81-62 victory against DePaul on Tuesday.

Gibbs is averaging 6.1 points and 4.1 assists per game for Creighton (13-2), which is off to a 3-0 start in the Big East.

No. 8 Villanova beats undermanned Seton Hall 83-67

Jay Wright isn't taking points away from No. 8 Villanova for unimpressive wins.

A `W' is a `W,' and that's all Wright wanted for the Wildcats (14-1, 3-0 Big East) in a game against undermanned Seton Hall.

Darrun Hilliard scored 19 points and Villanova hit a dozen 3-pointers in an 83-67 decision against a team that used seven players.

No. 8 Villanova shakes slow start to top St. John's

Villanova had been living large on the other side of the 3-point line. The eighth-ranked Wildcats had made 26 3s in their last two games and they shot better than 50 percent from beyond the arc in the wins over Providence and Seton Hall.

    Things were different Saturday.

With St. John's playing some tough perimeter defense, the Wildcats made just three of their 14 3-point attempts and down 56-55 with 7:44 to play.

"I thought St. John's played really well. Their defense was outstanding." Villanova coach Jay Wright said. "They did a great job of getting up on all of our people and challenging them."

The Wildcats, who were doing a good job of scoring inside when the outside was dry, finally found a way to get going from the outside and a 10-1 run carried them to a 74-67 victory at Madison Square Garden.

McDermott scores 28 for No. 20 Creighton

Devin Brooks was at the top of the key when he spotted Doug McDermott alone under the basket. Brooks looked right, then switched the ball to his left hand and let loose a perfect bounce pass through the lane to the Creighton star.

McDermott banked in an uncontested basket and sprinted to center court, where he and Brooks greeted each other with a jumping shoulder bump.

Just about everything went right Tuesday night for the 20th-ranked Bluejays, who rolled to an 88-60 victory over fellow Big East newcomer Butler for their 10th straight win

No. 6 Villanova romps past DePaul, 88-62

Villanova, as it should, has a knack for making wins easy when just about every shot is falling.

James Bell had 17 points and eight rebounds, Ryan Arcidiacono scored 14 points, and the sixth-ranked Wildcats won their fifth straight game, 88-62 over DePaul on Saturday.

Cotton leads Providence past No. 20 Creighton

Eight NBA teams sent scouts to the Dunkin' Donuts Center to get an up-close look at Creighton's Doug McDermott.

All of them probably ended up taking quite a few notes on Providence's Bryce Cotton.

Cotton scored 23 points and LaDontae Henton added 19 as Providence upset 20th-ranked Creighton 81-68 on Saturday night.
