JayVaughn Pinkston's basket, block send Villanova past Michigan

JayVaughn Pinkston ended some back-and-forth drama worthy of March with a bucket, a block and then a mad break -- straight into the waiting arms of his Villanova teammates.

The Wildcats had room to embrace all 6-foot-7 of him, and still have plenty of hands free to hoist a trophy.

Pinkston had the go-ahead basket and game-saving block in the final minute to lift the 12th-ranked Wildcats over No. 19 Michigan 60-55 in the Legends Classic championship game Tuesday night.

Butler hangs on for upset of No. 5 North Carolina in Battle 4 Atlantis

Butler's shooting numbers were awful. And it didn't matter.

The Bulldogs did more than enough to take down No. 5 North Carolina.

Alex Barlow and Kelan Martin each scored 17 points, and the Bulldogs grabbed 29 offensive rebounds to hold on to upset the Tar Heels 74-66 on Wednesday in the opening game of the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Georgetown edges No. 18 Florida in OT of Battle 4 Atlantis quarters

All D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera wanted to do was get to his spot.

    The rest was just instinct.

Smith-Rivera made a jumper with 3.4 seconds left in overtime, and Georgetown got a wild 66-65 victory over No. 18 Florida on Wednesday night in the Battle 4 Atlantis quarterfinals.

No. 23 Creighton tops Middle Tennessee 57-47

The emotional and physical stress of their first loss the night before caught up with the No. 23 Creighton Bluejays in the second half against Middle Tennessee on Saturday.

Creighton hung on, though, for a 57-47 win to claim third place in the inaugural Emerald Coast Classic. After building a big 36-15 halftime lead, the Blue Jays (6-1) turned the ball over on eight of their first 17 possessions after returning to the court.

No. 12 Villanova easily handles Delaware, 78-47

Villanova coach Jay Wright can't remember ever coaching a team as balanced as this one.

Kris Jenkins scored 13 points to lead five players in double figures and the No. 12 Wildcats cruised to a 78-47 win over Delaware on Sunday.

No. 23 Butler beats Indiana State 77-54

Butler couldn't wait to push around longtime rival Indiana State.

The Sycamores never really pushed back.

Kellen Dunham and Roosevelt Jones each scored 14 points Wednesday night and the No. 23 Bulldogs put on a defensive clinic, pulling away for a 77-54 victory.

No. 10 Villanova rolls past La Salle 84-70

Villanova's latest sensational nonconference victory was tagged with a warning for what's ahead.

"We can still get a whole lot better," coach Jay Wright said.

For a team already rolling, that's scary news for the other opponents on the schedule.

Darrun Hilliard and Dylan Ennis each scored 15 points to lead the 10th-ranked Wildcats to an 84-70 win over La Salle on Wednesday night.

    No. 10 Villanova tops Saint Joseph's 74-46

Darrun Hilliard put back his rebound for a layup and Daniel Ochefu followed with a bucket inside. Then it was time to mix up the offense. Josh Hart hit a 3, Kris Jenkins buried two straight 3s and Villanova's romp was in full swing.

Stop the Wildcats? Sure, but which ones?

This is a Big East favorite building momentum with a collection of go-to guys instead of one or two dominant scorers.

Hart scored 12 points and Hilliard and Phil Booth each had 11 to lead No. 10 Villanova to a 74-46 win over Saint Joseph's on Saturday.

No. 23 Butler defeats Northwestern 65-56

Butler defended its home court by guarding the paint on defense and attacking it on offense. That strategy allowed the Bulldogs to beat Northwestern 65-56 on Saturday.

    Two Marquette players to transfer

Marquette sophomores Deonte Burton and John Dawson will transfer out of the program.

The school made an announcement Tuesday that Burton, a highly regarded player from Milwaukee who attended prep school at Brewster Academy, and Dawson, a seldom-used reserve, will both head elsewhere.

Burton was expected to vie for a starting spot with new coach Steve Wojciechowski, but he was averaging just 6.4 points and 1.4 rebounds while coming off the bench for 16 minutes per contest, which ranks seventh on the team. BYU fifth-year transfer Matt Carlino leads the team in scoring at 13.8 points per game, and Duane Wilson -- who was hurt all of last season -- is second at 12.5 points per contest. Dawson hasn't played since the season opener.

No. 7 Villanova stays undefeated, routs Temple

Philadelphia's Big 5 city basketball series could be renamed Villanova and the Other Four.

Best team in the nation? The Wildcats are one of them.

Best in the city? Without a hint of doubt.

Josh Hart and Darrun Hilliard each scored 20 points to keep No. 7 Villanova undefeated in an 85-62 win over Temple on Sunday.

Off bench, Jordan scores 24 for St. John's in rout

When St. John's landed Rysheed Jordan, the consensus was that he would be an excellent starter.

    So far, that's half true.

Jordan came off the bench Sunday and tied a career high by scoring 24 points to lead No. 24 St. John's to a 74-53 rout of Fordham in the ECAC Holiday Festival.

Harrison, No. 20 St John's rally past Saint Mary's

Steve Lavin watched the first half and wondered what went wrong. For 20 minutes, the St. John's coach saw his veteran-laden team play as if it was full of strangers.

Following a speech in which he implored the No. 20 Red Storm to do better, they did.

D'Angelo Harrison scored 21 points and St. John's overcame a 15-point halftime deficit, rallying past Saint Mary's 53-47 on Friday night.

No. 7 Villanova stays undefeated with overtime win over Syracuse

Josh Hart has a saying at every Villanova practice, the kind that keeps his unbeaten team focused on the big picture of a potential championship season.

"We need to create habits that are going to make us successful in April," the sophomore guard tells the Wildcats.

April? The only two games played in April are the ones that decide the national championship.

The Wildcats have grandiose ambitions and closed out their latest win with a ferocious 6-minute stretch that showed why they are legitimate NCAA championship contenders.

JayVaughn Pinkston had 25 points and 10 rebounds and Darrun Hilliard scored 23 points, keeping No. 7 Villanova undefeated with an 82-77 overtime win over Syracuse on Saturday.

Temple guard trio pours in 54 on way to blowout of No. 10 Kansas

As he tried to recall some of the game's most pivotal plays, Fran Dunphy called one shot "impossible" and shook his head in disbelief when recalling two others that somehow banked in.

Temple's coach was as surprised as anyone by just how thoroughly his team dominated No. 10 Kansas.

Led by 19 points from Will Cummings and 18 from Quenton DeCosey, the Owls stunned Kansas with a 77-52 rout Monday night that snapped the Jayhawks' eight-game winning streak.

No. 17 St. John's beats Long Beach State 66-49

St. John's is in a place they haven't been in well over two decades, but Red Storm coach Steve Lavin isn't jumping up and down in celebration. The No. 17 ranked St. John's beat Long Beach State 66-49 on Monday night to improve to 10-1.

The last time the Red Storm began a season 10-1 was the 1990-91. That team finished the season with a 23-9 record before losing to then-No. 2 Duke in the Midwest Regional Final.

No. 7 Villanova overcomes slow start to rout NJIT 92-67

Despite losing his cool in the first half and seeing his team fall behind to the only Division I squad without a conference, Villanova head coach Jay Wright was perfectly calm at halftime.

He just knew he had to adjust the game plan. And he knew his guys would deliver.

Fueled by six players scoring in double figures and 54 percent shooting from the field, No. 7 Villanova overcame a seven-point second-half deficit to survive an early upset scare with a 92-67 win over NJIT on Tuesday.

    No. 17 St. John's handles Tulane 82-57

Sir'Dominic Pointer used a complete game to keep St. John's rolling.

"He's unique. (In) so many different ways he helps us," St. John's coach Steve Lavin said after Pointer had a career-high 24 points to lead No. 17 St. John's to an 82-57 rout of Tulane in the first game of the Brooklyn Hoops Winter Festival Tripleheader on Sunday.
