Tom Crean wins 300th as Hoosiers upset No. 23 Butler

    - Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell figured Indiana had taken enough punches from No. 23 Butler.

So the junior point guard and teammate Troy Williams fought back in the second half Saturday. Eventually, they combined to deliver a knockout blow.

Williams matched his career high with 22 points, and Ferrell scored 12 of his 20 points during a crucial second-half run to help send the Hoosiers past No. 23 Butler 82-73.

Layman leads No. 17 Maryland past Oklahoma State

Maryland passed another big test as it prepares for its first season in the rugged Big Ten.

Jake Layman had 21 points and 11 rebounds and the No. 17 Terrapins beat Oklahoma State 73-64 on Sunday to improve to 11-1. They handed the Cowboys their fifth loss in 198 nonconference home games dating to 1987.

No. 6 Wisconsin beats California 68-56

Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan has seen plenty of teams hit the road after a break for finals and come out flat. Nigel Hayes helped make sure the Badgers weren't one of them.

Hayes controlled the game inside with 17 points and 13 rebounds, and No. 6 Wisconsin returned from a nine-day layoff to beat California 68-56 on Monday night.

Williams has 18, No. 21 Ohio St rolls over Miami U

The Ohio State Buckeyes were upset that they played poorly on national TV against North Carolina.

    So somebody had to pay.

Reserve guard Kam Williams scored 18 points and No. 21 Ohio State went on a 26-3 run in the first half to beat Miami (Ohio) 93-55 on Monday night.

Layman helps No. 15 Maryland win 5th straight

Maryland's Dez Wells took a pass from Michal Cekovsky late in the fourth quarter and threw down an emphatic dunk over a pair of Oakland defenders.

If there were any questions about possible lingering health issues, Wells certainly put them to rest with that display of athleticism.

Wells, the Terrapins' scoring leader over the past two seasons, was back in the lineup after missing the past seven games with a fractured right wrist. Wells came off the bench and finished with 10 points in 22 minutes.

Jake Layman also had 15 points and a career-high 12 rebounds to help No. 15 Maryland extend its winning streak to five games with a 72-56 victory over the Golden Grizzlies on Saturday. Freshman Melo Trimble was 5 of 6 from 3-point range and had 17 points for Maryland (12-1).

Russell has 24, leads No. 21 Ohio State to win

D'Angelo Russell is not exactly certain who's in the Big Ten. He just knows that he's excited about finally finding out.

Russell scored 24 points on a stellar shooting night and Amir Williams added a career-high 21 to lead No. 21 Ohio State past Wright State 100-55 on Saturday.

Kaminsky helps No. 6 Wisconsin top Buffalo 68-56

Frank Kaminsky had his usual stellar night for No. 6 Wisconsin. When his teammates found their stroke in the second half, the Badgers cruised right by Buffalo.

Kaminsky had 25 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots, leading Wisconsin to a 68-56 victory over the pesky Bulls on Sunday.

No. 12 Maryland needs double overtime to defeat Michigan State

Maryland didn't make a lot of jump shots, but a game-saving 3 by Dez Wells and a procession to the foul line were enough to beat Michigan State 68-66 in double-overtime in the Terrapins' first-ever Big Ten game.

Iowa takes care of No. 20 Ohio State to open Big Ten slate

As fresh starts go, it was something to celebrate. Iowa coach Fran McCaffery knows it was just the first step of many.

Jarrod Uthoff and Aaron White each scored 18 points to lift the Hawkeyes past No. 20 Ohio State 71-65 Tuesday in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

Frank Kaminsky, Nigel Hayes lift No. 4 Wisconsin past Penn State

Once the ball gets into the paint, No. 4 Wisconsin can be tough to stop.

Few teams in the country can match the Badgers' athleticism in the frontcourt. Starters Frank Kaminsky, Nigel Hayes and Sam Dekker asserted control in the second half of an 89-72 win against Penn State on Wednesday in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

Two months ago, not even the players themselves expected Maryland to be this good so soon.

With their 70-58 victory over Minnesota on Saturday, the 12th-ranked Terrapins extended their winning streak to seven games and added another noteworthy accomplishment in the Big Ten to go with their double-overtime triumph at Michigan State on Tuesday.

Ohio State coach Thad Matta helped his former assistant, John Groce, get the job at Illinois.

Now Groce and the Fighting Illini may have done a return favor to Matta and the Buckeyes by forcing them out of a leaky zone defense.

D'Angelo Russell scored 22 points, including eight during a decisive 15-0 second-half run, to lead No. 20 Ohio State past Illinois 77-61 on Saturday.

It was Sam Dekker on the outside, and Frank Kaminsky all over the court. Duje Dukan provided a lift when he checked into the game, and Nigel Hayes had his share of positive moments.

No. 4 Wisconsin just overwhelmed Northwestern with its wide array of offensive options.

Kaminsky and Dekker scored 16 points apiece, leading the Badgers to an 81-58 victory Sunday night.

DeAngelo Russell was running Minnesota ragged, and Ohio State frolicked through the first half.

Then the Gophers toughened up and took Russell out of the game, raising the stress level for coach Thad Matta and the Buckeyes. One last shot by Marc Loving was enough for them to escape.

Loving's jumper from the lane with 5.6 seconds left in overtime lifted No. 22 Ohio State to a 74-72 victory over Minnesota on Tuesday night after blowing a 12-point second-half lead.

Troy Williams and his Indiana teammates had something to prove Saturday.

Yes, they've got the message about what it takes to win. And, yes, they've finally figured out how to deliver a closing combination.

Williams scored 15 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and helped the Hoosiers remain poised as No. 22 Ohio State made one last charge at the Hoosiers, who held on for a 69-66 upset.

The biggest upset in Rutgers' history had coach Eddie Jordan in tears.

For a couple of seconds after a stunning 67-62 win over No. 4 Wisconsin on Sunday, Jordan felt the emotions of all the losses over the past two seasons, hearing the many boos and naysayers.

As one shot after another clanged off the rim, it became apparent to Maryland that the impetus for a comeback against Rutgers would have to take place on the other end of the floor.

So the 14th-ranked Terrapins cranked up the defense, relentlessly pursued every misfire and rode the energy of the home crowd to a 73-65 victory Wednesday night in a duel between Big Ten newcomers.
