Bess, No. 13 Michigan St beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 92-46

After watching his team score 46 points in the first half and 46 more after the break Friday night, coach Tom Izzo thought he'd seen two sides to No. 20 Michigan State.

"Funny game," Izzo said after a 92-46 romp over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. "I'm trying to change the culture here. When you have a blowout in the first half, you should have the discipline to play the second half the same way. That was discouraging."

No. 21 Purdue dominates Old Dominion 61-39

Purdue coach Matt Painter sends Isaac Haas, a 7-foot-2 center, out with his starting lineup.

Then Painter has the luxury of bringing 7-footer A.J. Hammons off the bench.

If that doesn't sound intimidating, just ask the Old Dominion Monarchs.

Haas and Hammons combined for 28 points and 14 rebounds Saturday and No. 21 Purdue (4-0) defeated Old Dominion 61-39 in the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament.

No. 3 Michigan State pulls away and beats E Michigan 89-65

Michigan State got off to a sluggish start and got a spark from a role player.

Javon Bess scored nine of his 13 points in the first half and matched a season high with six rebounds to help the third-ranked Spartans pull away to beat Eastern Michigan 89-65 Monday night.

No. 13 Indiana bounces back with 83-73 win over St. John's

Less than 24 hours after a tough, last-second loss, No. 13 Indiana found a way to get back on the winning track.

Senior point guard Yogi Ferrell and freshman center Thomas Bryant had a lot to do with that in an 83-73 victory over St. John's on Tuesday in the consolation round of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational.

No. 3 Michigan State beats Boise St 77-67 in Wooden Legacy

It took Denzel Valentine and Michigan State an entire half to get warmed up. Once they did, Valentine went on a jaw-dropping scoring spree.

He hit five consecutive 3-pointers to break open a one-point game in the second half and finished with a career-high 32 points, helping the third-ranked Spartans beat Boise State 77-67 Friday in the semifinals of the DirecTV Wooden Legacy.

Isaac leads No. 16 Purdue past Lehigh, 77-55

Purdue center Isaac Haas acknowledges that sometimes he becomes timid, worrying about picking up a third or fourth foul.

The 7-foot-2 Haas was aggressive in the second half against Lehigh, leading the 16th-ranked Boilermakers to a 77-55 victory Saturday night.

Carter leads No. 2 Maryland past Cleveland State, 80-63

Maryland coach Mark Turgeon liked the way his players shared the ball, limited turnovers and attacked the zone against Cleveland State.

Now, an even bigger test looms for his undefeated team at No. 9 North Carolina on Tuesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Robert Carter had 17 points and eight rebounds to the help No. 2 Terrapins beat the Vikings 80-63 on Saturday night. Jared Nickens added 16 points, and freshman Diamond Stone had a season-high 15 points for Maryland (6-0).

No. 3 Michigan State beats Providence to win Wooden Legacy

Tom Izzo is no fan of college basketball's new rules that sidelined the two best players from each team in the championship game of the DirecTV Wooden Legacy.

Michigan State's Denzel Valentine picked up his third foul early in the second half and Providence's Kris Dunn earned his fourth with 8 minutes remaining Sunday night. In all, three Spartans had three fouls each and the Friars had five players with four apiece.

"I don't think it's fun to have these guys sitting. I don't think it makes our game as good," said the Michigan State coach, who is at 503 career victories after the third-ranked Spartans beat the Friars 77-64 Sunday night.

Hammons scores 24, No. 11 Purdue beats Pittsburgh 72-59

Ryan Cline caught the ball at the top of the key, hesitated for just a second and let it fly. A minute later he found himself open in the corner and did it again. On Purdue's next trip down, the freshman stood all alone behind the 3-point line one more time.

    Swish. Swish. Swish.

Not bad for a kid playing the first big minutes of his career.

Cline scored all 12 of his points in the second half -- including those three consecutive 3-pointers -- to give the 11th-ranked Boilermakers the spark they needed to surge past Pittsburgh 72-59 on Tuesday night.

Wisconsin knocks off Syracuse for OT victory

Eight games into the season, Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan isn't yet sure what he has, except for one thing -- the Badgers are a gritty bunch.

Shrugging off an embarrassing 17-point loss at then-No.7 Oklahoma on the weekend, the Badgers rallied past No. 14 Syracuse 66-58 in overtime on Wednesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

No. 3 Michigan State rallies to beat No. 24 Louisville 71-67

Denzel Valentine dominated when No. 3 Michigan State needed its senior star to deliver.

Valentine scored 11 of his 25 points in the final 5:06, including a tiebreaking 3-pointer and all six of his free throws in the final minute, to help the Spartans seal a 71-67 comeback win over No. 24 Louisville on Wednesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

No. 2 Maryland cruises past St. Frances 96-55

Maryland coach Mark Turgeon thinks the best is yet to come for Robert Carter Jr.

If Turgeon is right, the Georgia Tech transfer is primed for a huge season.

Carter had a season-high 20 points in just 19 minutes, and No. 2 Maryland rebounded from its first loss with a 96-55 victory over St. Francis on Friday.

No. 3 Michigan State romps over Binghamton 76-33

It's very possible that when the new rankings come out on Monday, Michigan State could find itself at No. 1.

If that happens, the third-ranked Spartans seem ready to handle the pressure.

Denzel Valentine had 13 points and 12 rebounds and Bryn Forbes scored 14 points as Michigan State rolled over Binghamton 76-33 on Saturday.

Ohio State stuns No. 4 Kentucky

The lead kept shrinking. It probably seemed like the clock wasn't moving. Ohio State was playing No. 4 Kentucky at a neutral site but it sure didn't sound that way.

The Buckeyes, who led by 16 points with 11:26 to play, appeared destined to be another opponent unable to hold a lead against the talented and deep Wildcats.

    Not these Buckeyes.

Ohio State, with all eight of its players scoring between six and 14 points, held off the furious rally -- Kentucky got within three points -- for a 74-67 victory Saturday in the CBS Sports Classic at Barclays Center.

No. 1 Michigan State holds off Northeastern 78-58

When Michigan State guard Bryn Forbes got up from the floor after diving for a loose ball, that's when things got really physical.

Teammates greeted him with violent chest bumps, and coach Tom Izzo showed his appreciation by giving Forbes a two-handed shove to the chest.

"He loves diving on the floor. I don't know what it is," Forbes said after the top-ranked Spartans turned around an early deficit to beat Northeastern 78-58 on Saturday. "Hustle plays. Energy plays. That's what he likes."

Layman scores 19 as No. 6 Maryland beats Princeton 82-61

For 20 minutes, Maryland was locked in a tight game with Princeton.

After halftime, the Terrapins looked every bit like the No. 6 team in the nation.

Jake Layman scored a season-high 19 points and Robert Carter fueled a second-half surge that enabled Maryland to pull away to an 82-61 victory Saturday night.

Carter, Stone shine as No. 4 Maryland beats Marshall 87-67

Maryland center Diamond Stone is finding his scoring touch just in time for his Big Ten debut.

The freshman continued his recent strong stretch Sunday, finishing with 16 points as the fourth-ranked Terrapins pulled away for an 87-67 victory over Marshall.
