Hammons scores 24, leads No. 14 Purdue over Wisconsin 61-55

Seven-foot center A.J. Hammons is thriving under pressure off the bench for No. 14 Purdue.

The senior big man took control in the paint down the stretch and took advantage of younger Wisconsin players guarding him in the post.

Hammons scored 24 points, Dakota Mathias hit two 3s in the final 1:19 and the Boilermakers held on for a 61-55 victory over the Badgers on Tuesday night.

Stone scores 39, leads No. 4 Maryland past Penn State, 70-64

Diamond Stone had several thunderous dunks, made key free throws and was an all-around force on his way to a record-setting performance.

Stone scored 39 points, the most-ever by a Maryland freshman, and had 12 rebounds, leading the fourth-ranked Terrapins to a 70-64 victory over Penn State in their Big Ten opener Wednesday night. Stone also set a program-record with 19 free throws on 25 attempts.

No. 1 Michigan State bounces back to beat Minnesota 69-61

Injured Michigan State star Denzel Valentine could only watch from the bench as the top-ranked Spartans staved off a challenge fromMinnesota.

Valentine still might have made the most meaningful contribution of the afternoon in the locker room afterward, giving beloved coach Tom Izzo the game ball in honor of his late father.

Bryn Forbes scored 20 points, making three 3-pointers in the second half to help the Spartans beat the Gophers 69-61 on Saturday in response to a loss atIowa earlier in a week that began with the death of 90-year-old Carl Izzo.

Iowa defense spurs rally for 70-63 upset at No. 14 Purdue

Iowa's defense spent the first half chasing No. 14 Purdue on the perimeter.

When that didn't work, coach Fran McCaffrey turned up the pressure and watched the Boilermakers fall apart Saturday night.

The Hawkeyes allowed only eight second-half baskets, forced 10 turnovers and rallied from a 17-point halftime deficit to rally for a 70-63 upset and Purdue's first home loss of the season.

No. 19 Iowa holds off Nebraska 77-66

Iowa's first performance as a Top 25 team wasn't nearly as pretty as the ones that landed it in the rankings.

The Hawkeyes won anyway -- and now they have over a week to prepare for a rematch with Michigan State, which they knocked out of the No. 1 ranking.

Jarrod Uthoff had 25 points, eight rebounds and four blocks as No. 19 Iowa held off Nebraska 77-66 on Tuesday night for its fifth straight win.

No. 3 Maryland beats Rutgers 88-63 for 8th straight win

Maryland went big against short-handed Rutgers -- with predictable results.

Freshman Diamond Stone led a dominating performance by the Terrapins on the boards, and No. 3 Maryland cruised to an 88-63 victory Wednesday night.

No. 5 Michigan State routs Illinois 79-54 without Valentine

Bryn Forbes has been a good player for No. 5 Michigan State.

Tom Izzo, though, is not satisfied with that.

Forbes scored 17 points to help the Spartans rout Illinois 79-54 on Thursday night for their second straight victory without Denzel Valentine.

No. 20 Purdue dominates middle in 87-70 win over Michigan

Purdue's Rapheal Davis spent all week contemplating the mistakes he made in last weekend.

On Thursday night, he made the corrections.

The Boilermakers' defensive stopper scored 16 points, had six assists and five rebounds and A.J. Hammons added 17 points and four blocks to help No. 20 Purdue pull away from Michigan 87-70.

Melo Trimble's 3 with 1.2 seconds left lifts No. 3 Maryland

With the game tied and about 20 seconds left on the clock, Maryland coach Mark Turgeon made the simplest play call he could make: give the ball to Melo Trimble and get out of the way.

The dynamic guard hit a long, straightaway 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left to lift the third-ranked Terrapins to a 63-60 win over Wisconsin on Saturday.

Hill, Nunn lead Illinois past No. 20 Purdue, 84-70

Ever since Illinois fell apart in a 25-point loss Thursday at No. 5 Michigan State, Illini practices have been "hell," according to Malcolm Hill.

"Bodies flying and colliding and words that not everybody can hear, from the coaching staff and the players as well," the quiet junior forward said.

Leading scorer Kendrick Nunn missed that game for the birth of his son, and the Illini, by their own admission, were embarrassed on the court.

Nunn was back on Sunday, and he and Hill combined for 52 points in an 84-70 win over No. 20 Purdue.

Forbes scores 20 to lead No. 5 Spartans over Penn St 92-65

Bryn Forbes' second half was not nearly as eventful as his first.

It didn't need to be. Not with leading scorer Denzel Valentine returning for No. 5 Michigan State and picking up the scoring pace at halftime in the Spartans' 92-65 win over Penn State on Sunday.

Michigan holds on for 70-67 upset over No. 3 Maryland

Mark Donnal came down with the game's biggest rebound, and as Maryland players tried to take the ball away, a whistle blew.

    Timeout, Michigan.

"It's a little bit of a relief," Donnal said.

Donnal's crucial offensive rebound -- and the timeout called by a teammate -- allowed the Wolverines to keep the ball with the shot clock off, and Michigan held on for a 70-67 victory over No. 3 Maryland on Tuesday night.

No. 24 Purdue dominates middle in 74-57 rout of Penn State
Purdue followed coach Matt Painter's instructions Wednesday night.

Vince Edwards was aggressive. Isaac Haas was tough. And with those two playing well, their teammates exposed the open looks they created.

Edwards scored 19 points, Haas had 14 and Caleb Swanigan finished with 13 points and nine rebounds to help No. 24 Purdue pull away from Penn State 74-57 in a game that looked almost as impressive as the box score.

No. 16 Iowa routs No. 4 Michigan State 76-59, sweeps series

Iowa proved it could beat, dominate in fact, Michigan State even with Denzel Valentine on the court.

Peter Jok scored 19 of his 23 points in the first half to help the 16th-ranked Hawkeyes build a huge lead that helped them rout the fourth-ranked Spartans 76-59 on Thursday night.

No. 3 Maryland cruises to 100-65 win over Ohio State

Maryland had no intention of allowing its first Big Ten defeat of the season to become part of a rare losing streak.

So when Ohio State came to town, the third-ranked Terrapins were in serious bounce-back mode.

Robert Carter Jr. scored a career-high 25 points, Rasheed Sulaimon added a season-best 22 and Maryland rolled to a 100-65 victory on Saturday.

No. 16 Iowa beats Michigan 82-71

A week filled with upsets will likely cause a major shakeup when the Top 25 is released on Monday.

One beneficiary should be Iowa, which is back atop the Big Ten after yet another impressive win.

Jarrod Uthoff scored 23 points and the 16th-ranked Hawkeyes beat Michigan 82-71 on Sunday for its first 5-0 start in the Big Ten in 19 years.

Wisconsin knocks off No. 4 Michigan State

Wisconsin interim coach Greg Gard likes to say experience is a great teacher.

Maybe that means the Badgers have learned something after coming up just short in games against the likes of Maryland, Indiana and Marquette.

Whereas Wisconsin fumbled away late opportunities in recent close losses, this time Ethan Happ scored underneath with 10 seconds left as the Badgers beat Michigan State 77-76 on Sunday.

No. 22 Purdue rolls over injury ravaged Rutgers

No. 22 Purdue did just what it had to do against injury-ravaged and undersized Rutgers.

It pounded the ball inside and came away with a record-setting performance that rewrote parts of Purdue and Rutgers history.

Freshman Caleb Swanigan had 12 points and 13 rebounds, and the Boilermakers held a 63-23 advantage on the boards in beating Rutgers 107-57 on Monday night, posting their biggest Big Ten Conference victory ever while handing the Scarlet Knights' their worst home loss.
