No. 6 Michigan State beats Penn State 88-57 after slow start

Tom Izzo has been telling his players when they're not making shots that defense and rebounding can win games, especially in the NCAA Tournament.

No. 6 Michigan State showed that against Penn State on Sunday.

Denzel Valentine started slow and finished strong with 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists to help the sixth-ranked Spartans beat the Nittany Lions 88-57.

Vince Edwards' 20 leads No. 15 Boilers over Nebraska 81-62

Purdue presents challenges for any opponent, especially an undersized one like Nebraska.

The 15th-ranked Boilermakers' big men had their way with the Cornhuskers for the second time this season, and when they couldn't find their shot, the men on the perimeter were there to score in an 81-62 victory Tuesday night.

No. 16 Iowa snaps skid with 71-61 win over Michigan

With its lead shrinking and the opposing crowd buzzing, Iowa's Mike Gesell stole the ball from Zak Irvin and went the other way for a layup.

The Hawkeyes stayed a step ahead of Michigan all night.

Jarrod Uthoff scored 16 of his 29 points in the first half, and No. 16 Iowa snapped a four-game losing streak with a 71-61 win over the Wolverines on Saturday. Derrick Walton scored 14 points for Michigan, but the Wolverines may now need a strong showing in the Big Ten tournament to make it to the NCAAs.

Swanigan, Thompson lead No. 15 Purdue past Wisconsin 91-80

Purdue has won 24 of its last 31 games in large part because of seniors A.J. Hammons and Rapheal Davis. But on Senior Day, it was the Boilermakers' underclassmen who led the way against Wisconsin.

Freshman power forward Caleb Swanigan scored a career-high 27 points and sophomore point guard P.J. Thompson also set a career best with 22, leading Purdue to a 91-80 victory Sunday night.

Terps seal opening win with late steal; Jake Layman nets 27

A turnover by South Dakota State in the closing seconds helped Maryland avoid a place with all the other top seeds that lost in the first round of this topsy-turvy NCAA tournament.

The Terrapins held off South Dakota State 79-74 Friday, behind a career-high 27 points from Jake Layman.
