Minnesota takes down No. 4 Iowa 102-95 with 3-point spree

Brandon Johnson joined Minnesota as a graduate transfer in this pandemic-altered season, the adjustment to Big Ten play made even more challenging by a recent ankle injury.

He sure found his comfort zone against Iowa.

Johnson went 8 for 9 from 3-point range — making all four of his attempts in overtime — and finished with 26 points and nine rebounds to lead Minnesota's late surge for a 102-95 upset victory over No. 4 Iowa on Friday night.

No. 21 Minnesota beats bad-shooting No. 17 Mich. St. 81-56

Three days after surging back to beat Iowa in overtime behind a stream of 3-pointers, Minnesota followed with a decisive victory over Michigan State on the strength of a stifling defense.

The Gophers have made their case to be included in the crowd of contenders in this loaded Big Ten.

Liam Robbins had 18 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, helping No. 21 Minnesota beat No. 17 Michigan State 81-56 on Monday night while holding the Spartans to 25.7% shooting.

Ayala, Wiggins lead Maryland past No. 9 Wisconsin 70-64

Maryland coach Mark Turgeon wasn’t exactly pleased that the Big Ten schedule had his team on the road for a Christmas Day game followed by a trip to Wisconsin three later.

Now, he couldn’t be happier about it.

Eric Ayala scored 17 points, while Aaron Wiggins added 15 points and nine rebounds as Maryland beat No. 6 Wisconsin 70-64 on Monday night.

No. 10 Iowa beats No. 16 Northwestern 87-72 in Big Ten game

Fran McCaffery knows he doesn’t have to tell Jordan Bohannon all that he has accomplished in his career at Iowa. Yet the Hawkeyes coach felt the need to talk to Bohannon after his recent struggles.

“Just to remind him how great he is, and who he is,” McCaffery said. “And what our team needs.”

    Bohannon listened.

“I think that kind of helped, him giving me a little nudge,” Bohannon said.

Bohannon had 24 points, including 19 in the second half, as No. 10 Iowa defeated No. 16 Northwestern 87-72 on Tuesday night.

Harper injured, but Mathis lifts No. 14 Rutgers over Purdue

Rutgers hasn't played with a complete, healthy lineup yet this year, so the 14th-ranked Scarlet Knights knew what to do when leading scorer Ron Harper Jr. was forced to the bench.

“We just had the next-man-up mentality," senior captain Geo Baker said.

This time, that man was Montez Mathis.

Mathis scored a career-high 25 points, including 16 in the second half, and Rutgers beat Purdue 81-76 on Tuesday night.

Potter leads No. 6 Wisconsin in rout of No. 21 Minnesota

For Wisconsin, the difference between losing to Maryland and routing Minnesota all came down to energy.

“That was lacking in the Maryland game,” the Badgers' Micah Potter said. “I’m sure it was visible from where you guys are, where you watch the game. That was the biggest thing, just keeping the same energy that we had in the first half.”

Bouncing back from the loss to the unranked Terrapins, Potter had 18 points and 11 rebounds Thursday to lead No. 6 Wisconsin to a 71-59 victory over No. 21 Minnesota that wasn’t as close as the final score indicated.
