Ivey scores 22 as Purdue beats Yale 78-56 in NCAA tourney

Jaden Ivey dashed up the court, and Zach Edey towered over the lane.

Purdue's speed and size were just too much for Yale.

Ivey raced his way to 22 points and Edey controlled the action inside, helping the Boilermakers shut down the Bulldogs for a 78-56 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.

Plummer's late free throws lift Illini by Chattanooga 54-53

The result didn't make sense to Brad Underwood. For the better part of 39 minutes Friday night, the Illinois coach watched his fourth-seeded team chasing 13th-seeded Chattanooga.

The Southern Conference champion Mocs, with alum and Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Owens cheering them on, smothered Illini All-America center Kofi Cockburn. They took double-digit leads in each half. They responded every time the Illini made a push.

The Illini didn't panic. They dug in behind Cockburn and guard Alfonso Plummer, whose go-ahead free throws with 12 seconds to go helped them pull out a 54-53 NCAA Tournament win that maybe they didn't deserve but will certainly take.

Wisconsin 67, Colgate 60: Badgers turn up the heat on defense and Johnny Davis closes with UW's last 14 points

Cinderella apparently couldn’t score a ticket for Wisconsin’s opening-round NCAA Tournament game.

Sure, No. 14 Colgate made it to Fiserv Forum on Friday night.

And the Raiders, who entered the tournament riding a 15-game winning streak, battled UW for 30-plus minutes before the Badgers turned up the heat defensively and then let Johnny Davis fill the role of closer.

Davis scored UW's final 14 points and finished with a game-high 25, and the Badgers held Colgate to two field goals and a total of eight points over the final 10 minutes 39 seconds to rally for a 67-60 victory in front of a raucous crowd.

Michigan State survives, edges Davidson 74-73 in NCAAs

Michigan State was tough enough to take back the lead in a critical moment, then fortunate enough to withstand Davidson's desperation final charge.

"I thought it was a little bit of a roller-coaster," Hall of Fame coach Tom Izzo said.

The Spartans survived regardless, getting a career-high 27 points from Joey Hauser to edge the Wildcats 74-73 on Friday night in the NCAA Tournament's first round. The win sets up one more marquee postseason matchup with Duke and retiring Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski.

Michigan in Sweet 16 again as Brooks puts away Vols late

Eli Brooks returned for one final college season with the goal of helping Michigan reach the Final Four.

Defying expectations, the Wolverines are halfway there.

Brooks scored seven of his 23 points in the final 3½ minutes and the 11th-seeded Wolverines booked the most surprising of their five straight Sweet 16 appearances, beating third-seeded Tennessee 78-68 on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Bates, Johnson lead No. 11 Indiana past Jackson State 90-51

Tamar Bates celebrated his best college game, first with his teammates and then with his 8-month-old daughter, Leilani, who sat on his lap as he answered postgame questions.

For Bates, it was the epitome of holiday weekend he'll never forget.

The sophomore guard made four 3-pointers and scored 22 points, both career highs, while Xavier Johnson added a season-best 16 points and No. 11 Indiana routed Jackson State 90-51 on Friday.

Zach Edey scores 23, No. 24 Purdue tops No. 6 Gonzaga 84-66

Zach Edey and his Purdue teammates were admittedly too excited early on for the chance to compared themselves to one of the top teams in the country.

Once the 24th-ranked Boilermakers calmed down, they showed they are worthy of their own consideration as a top team after a thorough 84-66 thumping of No. 6 Gonzaga in the semifinals of the Phil Knight Legacy tournament on Friday night.
