No. 8 Michigan overcomes scare from Illinois in final seconds

This time, Jordan Morgan got the ball to bounce the right way -- and Michigan celebrated.

A little more than one year after missing a last-second tip-in that would have given the Wolverines a share of the Big Ten regular-season title, the 6-foot-8 forward scored on a layup with 7.9 seconds left to give No. 8 Michigan a 64-63 victory over Illinois in Friday's Big Ten tournament quarterfinals and a shot at another league championship.

No. 12 Wisconsin runs away from on-the-bubble Minnesota

No. 12 Wisconsin made its point emphatically Friday night.

This is what real Badgers basketball looks like -- aggressive, disciplined and devastating.

Ben Brust scored a career high 29 points, Frank Kaminsky grabbed 12 rebounds and Minnesota didn't get many good looks against a lockdown defense, a combination Wisconsin used to pull away for an 83-57 rout in the Big Ten quarterfinals.

Ohio State rallies from 18-point deficit, ousts Nebraska

After watching his team turn the ball over nine times and fall behind by three points at halftime, Ohio State coach Thad Matta had some choice words for the No. 24 Buckeyes.

"I told our guys at halftime, I said, 'Look, with the nine turnovers we had, why don't we just go out and give them the ball nine times and let them try to score,'" Matta said. "And they took me literally, so we were down 18 points."

The fifth-seeded Buckeyes (25-8) found themselves in a deep hole, but rallied to beat fourth-seeded Nebraska 71-67 on Friday in the Big Ten quarterfinals.

No. 8 Michigan holds off comeback-minded Ohio State

No. 8 Michigan ended 15 years of Big Ten tournament frustration Saturday.

There's still some work to do before they can really celebrate.

After blowing a 12-point second half lead against their most bitter rival, Michigan went on a game-ending 7-1 run and survived a potential tying 3-pointeer in the closing seconds for its first tourney win over No. 24 Ohio State 72-69.

No. 22 Michigan State is getting hot and healthy just in time for the start of the NCAA tournament.

Adreian Payne finished with 18 points and nine rebounds and Branden Dawson added 15 points to help the third-seeded Spartans overpower No. 8 Michigan 69-55 on Sunday for its fourth Big Ten tournament title.

Ahanmisi, Minnesota beat High Point 88-81 in NIT

Two years ago, Minnesota embraced the National Invitation Tournament enough to reach the championship game.

The Gophers have the depth and talent to win this consolation event if they stay engaged the way many major-conference teams fail to.

Maverick Ahanmisi scored a career-high 21 points, and Minnesota moved on with an 88-81 victory over High Point on Tuesday.

Wisconsin recovers from slow start to rout American

A sea of fans wearing Wisconsin red roared after every stop and every score, growing more exuberant as the Badgers' NCAA opener became a historic rout.

Playing the first two tournament games close to home was a goal all year, and Wisconsin players fed off the energy to extinguish any upset hopes of 15th-seeded American.

Ben Brust scored 17 points and the No. 2 seed devastated the Eagles with a 22-5 run to close the first half in a 75-35 victory Thursday in Milwaukee, barely 90 minutes from their campus in Madison.

Adreian Payne's career game leads Michigan State over Delaware

Adreian Payne sent Tom Izzo a text. He wants to leave a legacy.

    Consider it done.

The 6-foot-10 senior played the game of his life Thursday, scoring a career-high 41 points to help fourth-seeded Michigan State look every bit like a March Madness favorite in a 93-78 victory over Delaware.

Michigan holds off Wofford despite cold start to 2nd half

While Michigan didn't have a particularly pretty start to its NCAA tournament, coach John Beilein felt his team proved a point to the rest of the field Thursday night.

Yes, the Wolverines can play defense, too.

Glenn Robinson III scored 14 points in the arena his father used to call home in the NBA, Jordan Morgan added 10 points and 10 rebounds, and the second-seeded Wolverines held No. 15 seed Wofford to 34 percent shooting in a 57-40 win.

Nik Stauskas leads Michigan past Texas in 3rd round

Nik Stauskas and Michigan figured out the best way to overcome Texas' advantage inside.

    One sweet shooting performance.

Stauskas made four of Michigan's 14 3-pointers, and the Wolverines beat the Longhorns 79-65 on Saturday to advance to the NCAA tournament's Sweet 16 for the second straight year.

No. 2 seed Wisconsin rallies in 2nd half, wins thriller over No. 7 Oregon

As an ear-splitting roar enveloped the arena, the Wisconsin Badgers pointed to their chests and strutted off the floor as if they had won a prize fight.

In a test of basketball tempos, Wisconsin delivered the knockout punch.

Ben Brust hit a 3-pointer with 1:07 left and the second-seeded Badgers returned to the Sweet 16 after overcoming No. 7 Oregon's transition game for a thrilling 85-77 win Saturday night in the NCAA tournament.

Michigan St. holds off Harvard to reach 12th Sweet 16 in last 17 years

For 18 seconds on Saturday, it was happening. Harvard owned basketball, too.

The school that churns out U.S. presidents, Supreme Court justices, billionaire CEOs and Nobel Peace Prizes was taking a serious run at altering the discourse on this year's NCAA tournament, as well.

Harvard guard Laurent Rivard made a 3-pointer from the corner, looped his thumb and finger together around his eye -- the "3-point goggles" -- and flashed a determined glare toward a group of Crimson fans in the stands who were coming unhinged. Someone in the Harvard nation tweeted: "rooting for the 1 percent."

The Ivy Leaguers had overcome a 16-point deficit to take a two-point lead over Michigan State, a team that always comes up big on college basketball's biggest stage.

The next time down the floor, Spartans guard Travis Trice came back with a 3 to put his team back in the lead. A few minutes later, Michigan State was out of danger -- not by much, though -- on the way to an 80-73 victory that sent Harvard back home, but not without making a statement.

Hollins leads Minnesota past Southern Miss in NIT

Austin Hollins, who's played more basketball games for Minnesota than any other player, saved his best for his last appearance at Williams Arena.

Hollins had a career-high 32 points, including six straight free throws in the final minute, to lead the Gophers to an 81-73 win over Southern Mississippi and a spot in the NIT semifinals.

No. 2 seed Wisconsin eases by No. 6 Baylor in Sweet 16

    - Ben Brust and his Wisconsin teammates got oodles of open shots while they sliced and diced Baylor's vaunted zone defense. When the Bears had the ball, 7-foot Frank Kaminsky always seemed to be right in their way.

Brust, Kaminsky and their Badgers realize they dominated Baylor in a 69-52 victory Thursday night because of a coach who always puts them in the right spots.

Michigan halts upset-minded Vols' rally to reach second straight Elite 8

Michigan coach John Beilein had watched his team blow almost all of a 15-point lead, and he was sure he knew how Tennessee would try to take the lead.

With 6 seconds left and trailing 72-71, Cuonzo Martin would probably send the ball into Jarnell Stokes, who would try to back into the post or drive. Beilein urged his defenders to buckle down and keep Stokes away from the rim.

Michigan State prevails to oust top-seeded Virginia

Michigan State turned the defensive tables on Virginia, and the Spartans advanced to the Elite Eight, putting them back in a place where they have had a lot of success.

Branden Dawson had 24 points and 10 rebounds, and the Spartans forced top-seeded Virginia into a terrible shooting performance in a 61-59 victory Friday night to advance to East Regional final of the NCAA tournament.
