No. 1 Ohio State starts slow, but tops Hawaii 38-0

Not a pretty day for No. 1 Ohio State. Mistakes here and there, but it didn't matter much as the Buckeyes started slow, then put up a flurry of points late and beat Hawaii 38-0 on Saturday.

Michigan State staves off late Oregon effort to win battle of top 10 teams

Connor Cook waited all offseason for another chance to win a game like this -- yet Michigan State's talented quarterback needed some help at the end.

The Spartans would have to hold one more time on fourth down against Oregon's always-dynamic offense.

"We've got all the confidence in the world in our defense and know that when it's crunch time they're going to come through." Cook said.

Vernon Adams Jr. threw incomplete to end Oregon's final drive, and fifth-ranked Michigan State held on to beat the seventh-ranked Ducks 31-28 on Saturday night in college football's marquee game of the week. The Spartans stopped Oregon four times on fourth down, including one key stand in the second quarter at the Michigan State goal line.

Warren Long lifts No. 23 Northwestern past Duke

Warren Long touched the ball three times for No. 23 Northwestern -- and wound up making two critical plays.

Long ran 55 yards for a touchdown then recovered a fumbled punt return to help seal the Wildcats' 19-10 victory over Duke on Saturday.

Aaron Burbridge leads No. 4 Michigan State past Air Force

At first, it looked like a terrific catch that wouldn't count, Aaron Burbridge leaping to haul in Connor Cook's throw along the side of the end zone, but landing out of bounds.

Replays showed Burbridge's left foot touched inbounds as his body stretched parallel to the ground, before any other part of him hit the turf. Touchdown, Michigan State.

"Amazing," Cook said. "To see him go up and reach back, and to still keep his foot inbounds -- a circus catch."

That was the most spectacular of Burbridge's three touchdown receptions Saturday in No. 4 Michigan State's 35-21 win over Air Force. The senior receiver caught eight passes for 156 yards, and Cook threw for 247 yards and four touchdowns.

Ejections, fire alarm, but No. 24 Wisconsin beats Troy 28-3

A sluggish start, two ejections and a brief delay caused by an errant fire alarm at Camp Randall Stadium made for an odd afternoon for No. 24 Wisconsin.

In the end, the Badgers restored order behind three touchdown runs and timely defense against an overmatched nonconference foe.

Two-way player Tanner McEvoy's 32-yard score helped break open a tighter-than-expected game in the third quarter, and Wisconsin wore down Troy for a 28-3 win on Saturday.

Defense bails out No. 1 Ohio State against upset-minded N. Illinois

For a team that seemed to have two great quarterbacks, Ohio State is now searching for one.

Cardale Jones started and threw two interceptions, J.T. Barrettfinished and was not much better, but Darron Lee and Ohio State's defense bailed out the struggling offense and the top-ranked Buckeyes beat Northern Illinois 20-13 on Saturday.

Michigan routs No. 22 BYU for rare win over ranked team

Michigan may not be back just yet.

The Wolverines, though, are getting much closer to where they want to be under coach Jim Harbaugh.

Jake Rudock ran for two touchdowns and threw for another one during a first half in which Michigan did all of its scoring in a 31-0 rout against No. 22 BYU on Saturday.

No. 2 Michigan State beats Central Michigan, but injuries mounting

Shilique Calhoun helped Michigan State disrupt Central Michigan's offense -- and its kicking game too.

The star defensive lineman had 2½ sacks and blocked a field goal Saturday, and the second-ranked Spartans beat Central Michigan 30-10. It was an outstanding performance from Calhoun on a day the rest of his team looked sluggish.

Cardale Jones improves, gets help from defense in win over Broncos

Quarterback Cardale Jones was better but still not good enough.

Jones came through with an effective, although sometimes erratic, performance in throwing two touchdown passes and leading No. 1 Ohio State to a 38-12 victory over Western Michigan on Saturday.

Deal runs for 2 TDs, No. 22 Wisconsin beats Hawaii 28-0

No. 22 Wisconsin rediscovered its swagger on the ground against Hawaii.

The defense looks as if it's already in midseason form.

Taiwan Deal ran for 147 yards and two scores, and the Badgers held a nonconference opponent without a touchdown for the third straight game in a 28-0 victory Saturday night.

No. 17 Northwestern rallies to beat Ball State 24-19

Clayton Thorson shook off a subpar first half by simply going back to the basics.

"I just started going through my progressions," the Northwestern quarterback said. "In the first half, I was guessing a little bit and I wasn't doing what I am coached to do. In the second half, I started to do that and it worked out."

Thorson threw three touchdown passes, Justin Jackson ran for a career-high 184 yards and No. 17 Northwestern overcame a sluggish first half to rally for a 24-19 victory over Ball State on Saturday night.

Purdue's final drive comes up short as Michigan State stays unbeaten

Arjen Colquhoun thought he had sealed a win for Michigan State after defending a fourth-down pass late in the final quarter. Then his brief celebration was halted by a penalty flag: holding on Colquhoun.

Moments later, it was fourth down again, and Purdue threw another pass Colquhoun's way. He was in good position to close in on the intended receiver, the ball fell incomplete, and this time Colquhoun paused to check for a flag.

"I was like, 'Before I celebrate, let me just see,'" he said. "It was good, it was clean."

The second-ranked Spartans could finally relax after Purdue's final drive fell short, and No. 2 Michigan State beat the Boilermakers 24-21 on Saturday despite a lackluster second half. LJ Scott ran for 146 yards and two touchdowns for the Spartans.

Ohio State thwarts Indiana's upset bid behind Ezekiel Elliott's career day

When everything else fizzled Saturday for Ohio State, coach Urban Meyer put the ball in Ezekiel Elliott's trusted hands.

He saved the game -- and perhaps the Buckeyes' title hopes, too.

The junior running back got a sluggish offense going with second-half touchdown runs of 55, 65 and 75 yards, and Eli Apple batted away a desperation pass in the end zone as time expired to preserve No. 1 Ohio State's 34-27 victory at Indiana.

Clayton Thorson has 2 TDs as No. 16 Northwestern tops Minnesota

Pat Fitzgerald recently challenged his Northwestern defense to have more fun, celebrating the role the dominating unit has played in the Wildcats success this season.

His players appear to have gotten the message.

Northwestern turned in another impressive performance andClayton Thorson scored two touchdowns and Justin Jackson ran for 120 yards as the No. 16 Wildcats shut out Minnesota 27-0 on Saturday.

Barrett plays finisher as No. 1 Ohio St beats Penn St 38-10

J.T. Barrett played finisher for No. 1 Ohio State, taking the Buckeyes from the red zone to the end zone in the first half and taking over for Cardale Jones full-time in the second half.

The Buckeyes were as good as they have been all season beating Penn State 38-10 on Saturday night, but still the question persists: Who is Ohio State's No. 1 quarterback?

Michigan State stuns Michigan with final-play fumble return

The snap was flubbed, and the football went flying. Jalen Watts-Jackson grabbed it with his right hand, cradled it to his body and ran a ball into the end zone that was supposed to be punted the other way.

In the 10 seconds it took for the clock to tick down, Watts-Jackson went from total obscurity to pulling off one of the most unlikely endings in college football as No. 7 Michigan State beat No. 12 Michigan 27-23.

J.T. Barrett scores five total TDs, No. 1 Buckeyes win 21st straight

J.T. Barrett has brought peace to Ohio State's volatile quarterback situation, at least for a couple of weeks.

Barrett was nearly flawless in his first start of the season, throwing three touchdown passes and running for two scores, and No. 1 Ohio State trounced Rutgers 49-7 on Saturday night.
