No. 18 Michigan State shuts down Tulsa in 28-7 win

Raequan Williams knocked the ball out, and Kenny Willekes recovered it in the end zone.

When Michigan State's defensive linemen are playing like this, the Spartans' offense has plenty of margin for error.

Willekes recovered two fumbles, including one for a touchdown, and No. 18 Michigan State manhandled Tulsa 28-7 on Friday night. Willekes, back on the field after breaking his leg in last season's Redbox Bowl, was part of a swarming Michigan State defense that held the Golden Hurricane to minus-73 yards rushing.

Taylor scores 4 TDs, No. 19 Wisconsin routs USF 49-0

Jonathan Taylor is off and running.

    Catching, too.

Taking up where he left off a year ago, when he led the nation in rushing with 2,194 yards and 16 touchdowns, Taylor ran for 135 yards and accounted for four TDs to help No. 19 Wisconsin open the season with a 49-0 rout of South Florida on Friday night.

No. 24 Huskers turn to defense to put away S. Alabama 35-21

As happy as he was with his defense, Scott Frost was in no mood to celebrate after Nebraska's opener against South Alabama.

Frost's coaching resume is built on offense, and he didn't like what he saw in the No. 24 Cornhuskers' 35-21 victory Saturday.

Clifford stars, No. 15 Penn State's defense hammers Idaho

Sean Clifford's first game as Penn State's starting quarterback was a short one.

A near flawless first-half performance backed by a dominant effort from the defense allowed Clifford to take the second half off as the 15th-ranked Nittany Lions hammered FCS foe Idaho 72-7.

Fields' Day: New QB helps Ohio State roll over FAU 45-21

Justin Fields made some mistakes that quarterbacks make when they haven't played much. The much-ballyhooed Georgia transfer also showed flashes of how good he might be and why he was a five-star recruit.

Fields, who saw limited action as a freshman last season sitting behind Jake Fromm, threw four touchdown passes and ran for a score in his first game for Ohio State, leading the fifth-ranked Buckeyes over Florida Atlantic 45-21 on Saturday in the season opener.

Stanley, Sargent lead No. 20 Iowa past Miami (Ohio)

Mekhi Sargent feels like a smarter running back.

It's no coincidence then that he had perhaps the best game of his young career with 91 yards and a touchdown in helping the 20th-ranked Hawkeyes beat Miami (Ohio) 38-14 in their season-opener on Saturday night.

Sluggish No. 7 Michigan beats Middle Tennessee 40-21

Shea Patterson threw three touchdown passes and No. 7 Michigan easily won its season-opening game.

However, the dual-threat senior quarterback wasn't in a mood to celebrate.

Patterson lost a fumble on the first play of the game and put the ball on the turf again later in the game, casting a shadow on his perspective of the Wolverines' 40-21 win over Middle Tennessee on Saturday night.
