    QB Philip Nelson to transfer

Minnesota sophomore quarterback Philip Nelson announced Thursday that he will transfer from the program to seek an offense that emphasizes more passing.

Nelson started 16 games for the Gophers but shared time with Mitch Leidner during the 2013 season. The coaches decided not to redshirt Nelson midway through his freshman year in 2012, and he started Minnesota's final seven games.

    Hoosiers hire DC Brian Knorr

Indiana has hired former Wake Forest assistant Brian Knorr as its new defensive coordinator, the school announced Monday.

Knorr replaces Doug Mallory, who was let go earlier this month. The Hoosiers finished last in the Big Ten in total defense for the third straight season under head coach Kevin Wilson, allowing 38.8 points per game in 2013.

    Kain Colter starts union movement

For the first time in the history of college sports, athletes are asking to be represented by a labor union, taking formal steps on Tuesday to begin the process of being recognized as employees, ESPN's "Outside The Lines" has learned.

Ramogi Huma, president of the National College Players Association, filed a petition in Chicago on behalf of football players at Northwestern University, submitting the form at the regional office of the National Labor Relations Board.

Backed by the United Steelworkers union, Huma also filed union cards signed by an undisclosed number of Northwestern players with the NLRB -- the federal statutory body that recognizes groups that seek collective bargaining rights.

    Nebraska bans DE Avery Moss

Nebraska sophomore defensive end Avery Moss will not play for the Cornhuskers in 2014 and has received a one-year ban from campus stemming from a public indecency conviction.

Moss pleaded no contest Monday to one count of public indecency. He had been charged with exposing himself to a campus convenience store worker in 2012.

    He'll be sentenced March 28.

University spokesman Steve Smith said Moss is not enrolled and has been banned from the Lincoln campus through Dec. 31. Smith said he couldn't disclose the reason for Moss' ban because of privacy laws.

    Vonn Bell undergoes MCL surgery

Ohio State safety Vonn Bell will miss the remainder of spring practice after undergoing surgery Thursday to repair a minor tear of his medial collateral ligament.

The sophomore's camp lasted only one workout. He suffered the MCL injury Tuesday, cutting short his bid to solidify a starting spot in the secondary for the Buckeyes after earning the job at the end of last season.

    Dominic Cizauskas charged with rape

Wisconsin recruit Dominic Cizauskas has been charged with third-degree sexual assault stemming from an alleged incident at a university dorm room in December.

Cizauskas, a linebacker from Mukwonago, Wis., verbally committed to Wisconsin in June and had been expected to sign with the program last month but did not. The 18-year-old was charged Monday, released on a signature bond and ordered not to have contact with the accuser or enter Wisconsin's campus.

    Gary Andersen signs new contract

Wisconsin on Monday approved a new compensation package for Gary Andersen that will pay the coach $300,000 more beginning in 2014.

The new deal increases Andersen's 2014 salary from $1.9 million to $2.2 million. He will receive a $100,000 raise each year of his five-year rollover contract. Wisconsin picked up Andersen's rollover earlier this year.

Ohio State Buckeyes senior tight end Jeff Heuerman's spring camp is over after suffering a mid-foot injury which required surgery and is expected to sideline him from workouts until early June.

Heuerman, a respected team leader and one of Ohio State's top returning threats in the passing game, will need to spend the next six weeks in a cast and walking boot before being cleared to resume physical activities.

His spring-ending injury is the third for the Buckeyes since practice opened last month and the second to a projected starter, joining safety Vonn Bell and backup receiver Jalin Marshall on the injured list heading into the final two weeks of camp for the program.

    Nebraska QB learns from mistakes

Nebraska quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. went through spring practice last year hoping he would get playing time behind Taylor Martinez.

Armstrong admitted this week that when his opportunity came, by way of an injury to Martinez, he wasn't as prepared as he should have been.

Martinez is gone now, and so is co-backup Ron Kellogg III. Armstrong will head into preseason practice as the presumed starter, and the rising sophomore is using this spring to assert his ownership of the job.

"I've worked as hard as I can because I know next fall, it's just going to be me," Armstrong said. "I've got to make the coaches happy, make sure my team has my back and make sure when things are going bad I'm the person who gets the team up. Last year I kind of struggled in those areas."

QB Gary Nova solid in spring game

If Rutgers' season were starting now, Gary Nova would be the starting quarterback.

"We don't have a game today," Nova said with a wry smile when told of his head coach's endorsement. "But it feels good that he sees that I'm progressing."

The rising senior was 6-of-13 for 78 yards while also rushing for a 1-yard touchdown, leading the White past Scarlet 21-0 in Rutgers' spring game on Saturday.

    Josh Banderas faces felony charges

Nebraska Cornhuskers linebacker Josh Banderas and a distance runner at the school were charged Tuesday with felony theft for stealing seven bicycles from a campus rack, according to a Lincoln (Neb.) Journal Star report.

The paper reported that Banderas, 19, who started four games as a true freshman in 2013, and Lucas Keifer, 19, a member of the Nebraska track and cross-country teams, were pulled over by police after a witness reported seeing two people clip locks with a bolt cutter and carry the bikes to a truck.
